@mygaffer I am sure it was like what they did in Buck Rogers RPG games, where you would need to look up the text in the book that came with the game. In a way, this was part of the copy protection of the game. There were parts in that game where you needed to know information from the book to move on with the game. I am sure someone scanned it and put it online somewhere.

I like the many detailed text descriptions in this game (even if memory limitations meant that a lot of it had to be put in the external paragraph document).

No, there's nothing "obvious" about that at all. In fact, I've played many early PC games that looked a lot worse than this but had much less text.
