@hellcat54 You need to check out where Elvis got his rock and roll from. He is the so-called "King" but he didn't start it... One think I love about Time-Life, they TELL IT LIKE IT IS AND WAS. Check out their 2 CD set Roots of Rock and Roll. Not one WHITE face on there. No secret that Elvis speak time in Black Churches and Jook joints to learn his moves and get this swagger. When he first came out, White elders hated him because he was dancing too much like them "N@#@#ers!
@palmares77 Doesn't matter, Mr. Presley got inspiration wherever he got it from as did james, he is still "KING" and you can't change that. Next thing you will have your people being the ones who invented the violin etc., i suppose Bach and Beethoven were black too. I suppose george washington carver junior didn't get credit for inventing peanut butter and shoe polish! You see, none of that matters because Elvis Presley still made it bigger by far. Once again, i love james brown Elvis is king!
@manixman333 No we didn't invent the Violin yet they have said that Beethoven had partial Black ancestry...lol... Elvis didn't make it bigger by far because more people like James Brown then Elvis....James had EVERYBODY as a fan. Not too many Black people could name one Elvis song....Except for HoundDog and that was sung by a Black woman first. Elvis made more money because his White skin gave him more opportunity. Elvis Gospel? Come on. Who invented Gospel music??
@palmares77 Come on, I am maybe the biggest James Brown fan around, and I think he is much better than Elvis, but it is a fact that Elvis is much more popular. Elvis sold 1 billion records, James Brown sold maybe 100 million? There reasons Elvis was bigger (white, handsome, easier to get airplay at that time, he was in movies, a black man would never be allowed to do that at that time).
@hellcat54 He got filthy rich off a song a Black woman sung first. Hounddog. First sung by Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Elvis didn't sing it until 1956.
@palmares77 Yeah but Hound Dog was written by two Jewish guys from up north. That's not a knock. I way prefer James Brown to Elvis. Much more energy and much more entertaining. I'm not an Elvis fan at all. I don't think Hound Dog was that great a song anyway.
@mrwhatever213 Those guys were professional songwriters. They could write about anything, including hound dogs. Sure, they copied the style of the song from black performers. It was a blues song, so the style of it had black origins. They set out to write a song that sounded like it was written by a black guy, and since they were pros, they could do it. No disrespect, man. I'm not an Elvis fan. I think he stinks. And I don't think the song is any good either. I'd prefer JB doing "Night Train".
Jacksonville, Fla circa 1961, 9 pm, Ken Knight , a local DJ and his Night Train program on the radio. This was his theme song. We used to sneak the radio in bed so we could listen to his show. Was able to see JB perform live. Memorable. No one else like him. Loved the drama of the cape, that thing with the mic, and the splits. We'd be sore for days trying to imitate him. A legend.
I wonder how much inspiration Michael Jackson got from watching James Brown. Brown looks like a very disciplined guy who must have worked for hours on end to make it all look so easy and natural.
Swear...everytime i come back and look at this i smile hella hard...
and i cant just watch it one or two times..im on ps3 and i played it about 10 times already and my mom came in the living room looking at me crazy like "Damn, Diamond, you aint got on the night train yet??" lol
True: there wouldn't have been an MJ if there had never been a James Brown. MJ knew that and he would say the same thing. James Brown truly the godfather of soul. As far as the greatest entertainer of all time. They can both share that title.
If James Brown would've danced like Elvis you know pelvis shaking and shit he would not have been a smash hit with america as a whole (blacks&whites).Black performers had to be way way way better than their white counterparts and this man was born to have that job.Simply put, a phenomenal performance.
You cud c he was havin' himself a goodtime up there, rockin' the crowd @ the same time' & he's laughin' as he's walkin' off-stage @ the end. N it's known that he had women all over the place. And who knows how many babies who themselves r in their 20's -40's now.--- R.I.P .bro. James.
i'm feeing the excitement from this performance at home in a chair in front of my computer so i can only imagine the excitement the audience felt being there in person some 40 years ago
I know one thing this man was DYNAMITE!! I can see why Michael and Prince admired this man this entertainer. He has me at my computer in awe lol. I can recall my friends and I imitating Mr. Brown. Let me try that now I would be in traction LOL. Awesome stuff here. Too bad we don't have that now.
@mat023able It's entitled "T.A.M.I Show" I bought it at a bookstore yesterday, so it should be pretty easy to find. And it's not a bootleg or anything like that. Dick Clark Productions was involved in it's release. It's the real deal!
Hello everyone. Yesterday I did my soul a favor by going to a Borders bookstore here in NYC and buying the DVD of the complete T.A.M.I Show. I bought it just for the James Brown segment and I've watched it so many times the rewind button on my remote is begging for mercy! I'm STILL not ready for the Night Train!!!
Yeah theres a slide of the moonwalk at 2:45 James you were Billy Bad Ass then and now this performance here cant be compared really to anything. Its just Jaw dropping AWESOME!!! Thank You Mr James Brown. THE GOD FATHER OF SOUL!!!
The real reason why many Black performers had this kind of dynamic and exhilirating ferocity in their music/entertainment is because so few opportunities where available to us in those days. You put your heart, soul, dignity, and everything else into your music and entertainment abilities. This is one of the few ways that as a man or woman of color, you could make a real buck and hold your head high at the same time. No accident that as opportunities have opened for us, our music has declined.
Just to show you HOW DUMB you are..Elvis was born in '35. James Brown born in '33. Do the math buddy..Rock and Roll originated from largely Black artists .I love Time-Life, they are SO HONEST about EVERYTHING. Go check out their 2 CD Disk set Roots of Rock/Roll. Tell me how many White faces you see. When you come at me, you better COME CORRECT. Do research first before you start talking. No secret Elvis used to go into Black churces and jook joints frequently. His swagger came from what he saw.
@palmares77 "few opportunities where available to us in those days" -palmares77
totally agree with wat ur sayin but available to us? no no no no.... u mean to them..... just cause someone of ur own "race" goes through a struggle doesnt mean u did to....
@Peter258 Every man who shared James Brown ancestry in those days went through hell in their own way. Again, if you were Black in those days.......VERY FEW almost microscopic opportunities for real advancement in society existed. White Racist Supremacy was at an all time high back when this was video was filmed. Entertainment was one of the FEW venues that White Society let us do our thing, for that reason our music flourished and was the envy of the world at one time.
@palmares77 Our music never declined because of us. it is by designed, by the people in power and the banks, who own the record company's. once they found out the power of music to teach the masses and control them, they took it over. there are a lot of underground artist in soul and hip hop, who are so special. they are just being shut out by the radio stations.
@manixman333 In your dreams buddy.....White elders hated Elvis when he first came out. You know why?? They thought he was playing that N-music and dancing to much like us too. Elvis stole his style from the many unsung Black artists of that day. He got his dancing from Jackie Wilson.
two of the most important innovators in music are gone, thanks youtube for having such good quality footage of such a old clip for people my age to see
This performance is from the TAMI Show in '64. There were the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, The Supremes, the Rolling Stones to name a few. He and the Flames also did "Please, Please, Please" with this and as one can tell brought down the house. To answer constellaion 72's question, you don't. The Rolling Stones were next and last and to this day remember asking themselves that same question when James was done.

You know I do not listen to that Elvis, I also know the old blues, the gospel, R' not b, Hill Billy boogie, western swing, boogie-woogie... I have quite old man's collection vinyl. Friendly

james brown is the king of soul music & the best black performers, Elvis is the king of rock 'n' roll & the best white performers. RIP james & Elvis
hellcat54 1 year ago
@hellcat54 You need to check out where Elvis got his rock and roll from. He is the so-called "King" but he didn't start it... One think I love about Time-Life, they TELL IT LIKE IT IS AND WAS. Check out their 2 CD set Roots of Rock and Roll. Not one WHITE face on there. No secret that Elvis speak time in Black Churches and Jook joints to learn his moves and get this swagger. When he first came out, White elders hated him because he was dancing too much like them "N@#@#ers!
palmares77 1 year ago
@palmares77 Doesn't matter, Mr. Presley got inspiration wherever he got it from as did james, he is still "KING" and you can't change that. Next thing you will have your people being the ones who invented the violin etc., i suppose Bach and Beethoven were black too. I suppose george washington carver junior didn't get credit for inventing peanut butter and shoe polish! You see, none of that matters because Elvis Presley still made it bigger by far. Once again, i love james brown Elvis is king!
manixman333 1 year ago
@manixman333 No we didn't invent the Violin yet they have said that Beethoven had partial Black ancestry...lol... Elvis didn't make it bigger by far because more people like James Brown then Elvis....James had EVERYBODY as a fan. Not too many Black people could name one Elvis song....Except for HoundDog and that was sung by a Black woman first. Elvis made more money because his White skin gave him more opportunity. Elvis Gospel? Come on. Who invented Gospel music??
palmares77 1 year ago
@palmares77 Fats Domino wasn't the first to sing Blueberry Hill yet his is the most recognized, so what, Elvis owned all of yall LOL
manixman333 1 year ago
@palmares77 Come on, I am maybe the biggest James Brown fan around, and I think he is much better than Elvis, but it is a fact that Elvis is much more popular. Elvis sold 1 billion records, James Brown sold maybe 100 million? There reasons Elvis was bigger (white, handsome, easier to get airplay at that time, he was in movies, a black man would never be allowed to do that at that time).

@PaulDA2000 Point taken and accepted. You have no argument from me on your point.
palmares77 11 months ago
@hellcat54 He got filthy rich off a song a Black woman sung first. Hounddog. First sung by Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Elvis didn't sing it until 1956.
palmares77 1 year ago
@palmares77 Yeah but Hound Dog was written by two Jewish guys from up north. That's not a knock. I way prefer James Brown to Elvis. Much more energy and much more entertaining. I'm not an Elvis fan at all. I don't think Hound Dog was that great a song anyway.
RRaquello 11 months ago
@RRaquello Thats a lie. what would they know about hound dogs lol. his shit came from brotha's and some artist taking credit for writing t is bull.
mrwhatever213 10 months ago
@mrwhatever213 Those guys were professional songwriters. They could write about anything, including hound dogs. Sure, they copied the style of the song from black performers. It was a blues song, so the style of it had black origins. They set out to write a song that sounded like it was written by a black guy, and since they were pros, they could do it. No disrespect, man. I'm not an Elvis fan. I think he stinks. And I don't think the song is any good either. I'd prefer JB doing "Night Train".
RRaquello 10 months ago

Although I love Michael, James danced his ass off!! No wonder Michael looked up to him and James being the godfather of soul. He earned that title.

No accident that as opportunities have opened for us, our music has declined.

manixman333 1 year ago
Just to show you HOW DUMB you are..Elvis was born in '35. James Brown born in '33. Do the math buddy..Rock and Roll originated from largely Black artists .I love Time-Life, they are SO HONEST about EVERYTHING. Go check out their 2 CD Disk set Roots of Rock/Roll. Tell me how many White faces you see. When you come at me, you better COME CORRECT. Do research first before you start talking. No secret Elvis used to go into Black churces and jook joints frequently. His swagger came from what he saw.
palmares77 1 year ago
@palmares77 "few opportunities where available to us in those days" -palmares77
totally agree with wat ur sayin but available to us? no no no no.... u mean to them..... just cause someone of ur own "race" goes through a struggle doesnt mean u did to....
Peter258 11 months ago
@Peter258 Every man who shared James Brown ancestry in those days went through hell in their own way. Again, if you were Black in those days.......VERY FEW almost microscopic opportunities for real advancement in society existed. White Racist Supremacy was at an all time high back when this was video was filmed. Entertainment was one of the FEW venues that White Society let us do our thing, for that reason our music flourished and was the envy of the world at one time.
palmares77 11 months ago
@palmares77 Our music never declined because of us. it is by designed, by the people in power and the banks, who own the record company's. once they found out the power of music to teach the masses and control them, they took it over. there are a lot of underground artist in soul and hip hop, who are so special. they are just being shut out by the radio stations.

manixman333 1 year ago
@manixman333 In your dreams buddy.....White elders hated Elvis when he first came out. You know why?? They thought he was playing that N-music and dancing to much like us too. Elvis stole his style from the many unsung Black artists of that day. He got his dancing from Jackie Wilson.
