The people of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are the unfortunate pawns, caught in the middle of this power struggle, being tugged and pulled at by both sides. In terms of Chechnya, in spite of the freedom fighters, it will not become independent state. I would rather it be, but I don't think it will. Dagestan, Ingyshetija, chechnya, etc. need strict corruption laws, firm and realiable executive power. They do not understand issues. As Soviet Union broke up look att what has happend in Abkhazia. Russians supported separatists. After the war, instead of Russia suppose to work the things out with Georgians, the Putin administration provides more weapons and incorages them to fight against Georgians. This is not the way Putin can maintain stability in the caucasus.

3. If Ossetians were in Gori before the war, Russian peacekeepers had no right to leave the conflict zone, that was the job of Georgian authorities. However, after the attack, Russia had full rights under international law to do what it did.

You can find Basayevs interview and see how he and his bandwagon were fighting against Georgians in 1990s. I am not saying Russian solders have to leave civilian zone, they had opportunity to disarm separatists while shooting Georgians. This is peacekeepers job, not ordinary Russians. You got to grow up. I did not say in Moscow, i said in Russia. these numbers could be found all over in the media, from BBC to 'komsomolskaja pravda' i 'Argymenti i Fakti'. these are pretty reputable sources, i am sure the estimates are based on official statistics. Although the amount of Georgians might have decreased slightly due to the fact that many illegals have moved back to Georgia, since Russian economy is not doing well.

Russia is a free market society it does not follow communist ideals. Georgian Federation is an independent state, it can do whatever it wants. If you believe that dealing w/ US is better so be it - it is you choice, nobody takes the freedom away from you. There is saying in Russian, "Kyma s vozy kobile legche"! We have enough of our own problems than supplying those hungry poor Georgians with food and other resoures!

You got wrong statement. First of all, Georgia has been member of WTO since 1990s, while your country got problems to join WTO. Secondly, Georgia is the agriculture country and nobody is starving to death. I have seen more hungy people in Russia. Georgian mentality is based on two things crime and business, not surprisingly those two elements combined produce one thing - mafia. Believe it or not there is a strong georgian mafia in Russia right now, and what Hollywood calls 'russian mafia' in america is actually a combination of criminals from all over the USSR including georgians. Interesting that slavic people are not big on organized crime, georgians are - they always mingle in groups, yet they call it a 'Russian mob'!

It was fashionable to have mafia mentality in the 90s, today, if you look closely you will see that so called mafia or organized crime today in Russia is mainly made up of Georgians and Armenians and some other individuals from Kaukasus. Of course there are some criminal element among every nationality in Russia, but Kaukasus people are traditionally stong on organized crime in the big Russian cities. As i look at it, crimina is a criminal regardless his status in the society.

First of all, there are very few Georgians in Russia since Putin departed them from the country. Secondly, I have been visiting Russia since 1980s, and I see a bunch of criminals and NAZI minded individuals. Type in Russian mafia, and you get so many sites about it. Do you have a basic education? Did your mom tought you that child was born in the Caucasus are already criminals? As far as I know so called "vor vzakon" originally was born during the Soviet Union. There are roughly 1.5 million Georgians in Russia, most of which settled in Moscow and surroundings (about half). Mr. Putin have recently reconfirmed that ALL of the ethnic groups in Russia are and will be protecetd by the Constitution and by the Government.
In terms of xenophobia, yes it does exist in Russia, and I hope it will disappear! But I hope that Georgians will stop burning Russian Fed flags on the streets of Moscow, and chechen rebels change their mind set!

One find day, while I was dining at a restaurant, Russian guys told me that people who were making noises at nearby table were Georgians. Later it turned out they were Armenians:-) It is understandable that Georgians are angry at Russia. You would feel bad if Russia had lost Novgorod and St. Petersburg. I met some Russians who had simpathy on Georgians. They were much older than Putin

If you ask anyone who lived in Russia in the 80s and 90s, especially in big cities of Russia, the'll tell you many stories about Georgian nationals that would come to visit Russia to rape and in some cases murder young unsuspecting women and burglarize homes in the cities. I had a friend in school in the 80s his aunt went to Caucasus for a vacation she never came back, police found her raped and murdered.

As usual, there are at least two sides to the story. Let us not deceive ourselves. Russia and the West each have their own motives. The people of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are the unfortunate pawns, caught in the middle of this power struggle, being tugged and pulled at by both sides. Perhaps it is them and their republics which we should be defending.
