It is clearly a reckless foul from behind. It doesn't matter if he was playing for the ball or got the ball or not because he still went through the player to gain an advantage. You can see it is a dangerous play and he takes the player out. The ref probably could have given him a yellow card, but because it is up to the refs discretion to give the punishments, he was warranted in dealing out a red. When you take away your personal bias it is clear that this is a foul.

Essien against Fulham last month. Both these challenges the player got all of the ball and none of the player, but they were sent off because they went in both feet studs showing - this is "serious foul play" in the FIFA rules & regs, which means a sending off even if they get the ball.
