  • So Harrison Ford's character was involved with the murder plot?

  • I don't understand WHO threats him and puts the mic ... Harrison Ford's character was dead's (poor guy :-() friend? Isn't? And the murderers don't know about Gene Hackman's character. Isn't?

    Sorry for my bad English.

  • @alguien1234 No, they (Harrison Ford and the girl) tricked Gene's character to be able to "reach" the chief executive of the company. They used Gene to get him to that hotel room so that they could murder him. What they didn't want was Gene to get involved, but when he got they had no other thing to do than to "crush" him, as they did in this scene.

  • Epic

  • The telephone is the mic, it was showed at the convention how to do this.

  • @darkvoid86 I agree with the interpretation that the telephone is the mic.

Bernie has a motive to bug Caul as he is desperate to find out Caul's methods and at the same time prove to Caul that he has the skills to be a master (shown earlier when he used the pen to bug Caul).

The phone is used as a mic and the conclusion is that Bernie proves superior by being able to bug Caul. The way he destroys the flat symbolises his degradation and contrasts brilliantly to the initial scene in the flat.

  • I wonder if he'll get his security deposit back?

  • Great Movie(a little 'dyspeptic perhaps but worth its investigation in to a dark subject)

  • Great Movie

  • the mic could also be in his watch

  • Hahaha, shows whart parinoia can do to you! Thats what i like about this movie, because paranoid people annoy me sometimes.

  • Losing. It's spelled losing.

  • If you love this try The Lives of Others

  • Great, great movie. And to think, Coppola just made this as a stopgap between The Godfather 1 and 2! An ending this downbeat would never come out of Hollywood these days. The 70s was an awesome decade for American filmmaking.

  • that would make sense but I think you're wrong as well. From this clip we see that when he answers the phone the first time, there is music in the background however only the sounds of drums (no sax). when he answers the second time and has the recording played back to him we can clearly hear the sound of drums and a saxophone.

  • @fatandslat

    Two problems with this.

    1) The device earlier in the movie DOES involve a hidden bug (he mentions having installed it in his house in that very scene!).

    2) The whole friggin' point of that device is that the phone does NOT ring!

    Pay better attention next time.

  • A brilliant movie. I'm ashamed to say that I only caught this movie 2 years ago on TCM and I always regarded myself as a movie fan. Though I found it sometimes before while channel surfing, if it was already started 5 minutes in, I'd leave it till I could watch it in it's entirety.

It would have been sacrilege not to have seen this film. 'They don't make them like this anymore', a cliche but so true.

  • I liked this movie...haven't seen it in a long time but right from the start there is something kinda phony here. As someone who has actually dismantled portions of various lodgings from time to time looking for surveillance devices I can tell you I was closing my blinds way way before that point.

  • The final shot is amazing. Probably Coppola's best work.

  • Are the jazz trumpet/sax tracks available as a (legal) download anywhere? I gather these are actually David Shire compositions made to "sound live and authentic".

This is a missing jigsaw piece for me and I know that American Zoetrope had the answer..........but they ignored my question.

    Thanks, fellow disciples!

    Can anyone help

  • I have read the official screenplay - the surveillance device is in his watch. In the film, he doesn't take it off.

  • I agree - a masterpiece.

The sound and the music are superb.

Sound edited by Walter Murch - genius!

  • This film defines the 70's.

  • the mic is in the sax

  • @salatatabaa Haha, that's what I thought, too... also, notice the suble "security camera" movements of the shot... scanning...

  • One of the best movie ending of all time

  • this movie is just a masterpiece, I can't believe that coppola has done all his best works in the 70's and leave the crap for now...where r u Francis??

  • Was Gene Hackman actually playing that sax in the movie?

  • fucking great film, makes me wonder how many hackers have done the same thing to their computer when they are freaking out about fucking with something they shouldnt have
