Vargas was a top-tier fighter who actually gave something to boxing. He always showed-up in shape and gave 100%, unlike alot of fighters who seek on money fights and don't always respect the fans enough to give us a show.
Sarcasm aside for a second, Vargas deserves and will receive respect based on his combined performance and accomplishments. I fully realize we'll never see his face in the HoF, in part because of the roids. But, he fought every fight in typical vargas fashion, which was a good mix of skill and heart. He was a top-tier fighter.

People don't always say this but Vargas was winning the Tito fight, outboxing Tito until his pride made him brawl with Tito at the end of Round 8/9.
If Vargas had stayed disciplined through that period he would have taken this fight. For 4 or 5 rounds he looked like Tito's superior.

when I saw Vargas before the Trinidad fight I knew he would be a great fighter and he was until he started doing steroids and lost to De la Hoya,Mosley and Mayorga...I didn't say Trinidad because he was too young and plus Trinidad fights dirty sometimes especially in his fight with Vargas anyways yeah Vargas should've gotten better management

Heres how i see it, Fernando should have never faced tito. It doesnt matter how old you are, once its beaten out of you , its beaten out of you. He had the skill and the heart, but the will to succeed, that undefeated feeling was crushed after that tito fight. Its like tito after hopkins, Roy after tarver, tyson after douglas, its never the same after youve been beaten, and i mean BEATEN to a pulp orange juice style. Definitely, He was just a kid, and he was fighting legends! and he was actually holding his own against them! If Vargas came around a few years later, when these guys were out of their primes, he could have been an undisputed champ. You have to respect that he fought these hall of famers so fearlessly.

He was 25 when he fought De La Hoya. Or very close to it. Born in 77, De La Hoya fight was in 2002. In boxing, if your not in your prime at 25, your never going to be there. You make more excuses for the "Punk" than he does ! Tyson was 18 when he was knocking people out in the first round. Vargas was nothing more than a top level second tier fighter ! Ya Vargas was young as hell. They rushed him too much, he had that much talent though. One can only imagine if they let him develop some more over the years before putting him in with people who were 5 years older than him. He didn't reach his prime yet, prime boxing years are pretty much when your 25+. Cheato Trinidad ruined him, after that fight Vargas couldn't take a punch like he used to.

Vargas was great. Its amazing that he hung with all of these hall of fame fighters a few years back. He was just a kid, and he was almost beating these guys. Hes got as much heart as anybody, and the young Fernando will always be one of my favorite fighters.

I fully realize we'll never see his face in the HoF, in part because of the roids. But, he fought every fight in typical vargas fashion, which was a good mix of skill and heart. He was a top-tier fighter.
