THE definitive version of a truly fantastic song. It's been covered by EVERYONE, sometimes even quite well (Check out the Dinah Shore/Pearl Bailey version on YT), but really, it's THIS version that sets the standard. I used to play this 45 over and over on my stereo, and fifty years later it hasn't lost any of its freshness. A timeless classic, as all good music should be..
@njplr I agree with you to degree, however for music purists, and I dare say Mr. Darin himself would agree, Louis Armstrong sung the definitive version........
@MrMrchristian10 The way I'd describe the Sinatra/Buffet version is Rat Packian. Great if you're at the Sands back in the day with a bunch of drinks in you, but just annoying otherwise.
i feel inlove with this (so vioent its commical) song once i heard it one night. Im so happy the lyrics stuck in my head or else i would have never found the title.
A new music book is being published called 'You Are A Tube!' compiled by Steven Fried PLC. This publication contains literally thousands of comments from YouTube.
hey vixenhime i like that kind of music too because my parents would always play this music, and my dance teacher used this music for her dances, ex. mack the knife, boogie woogie bugle boy, neutron dance, hit the road jack, if my friends could see me now, and so on... i always liked it although a lot of my friends wanted her to do modern stuff, and now she's changed and were doing "born this way", yea i remember 2008 and 2009 there was a hit jazz dance to this involving fold-able chairs
I was born at the end of 92. I have always loved the music from decades before i was born. My mother always calls me old because I would be in the house listening to songs like Mack the Knife, Boogie Woogie Buggle Boy, Jetplane, and Summer Wind. And I think i will always have a special place in my heart for Frank Sinatra
My Mum's favourite and it was played at the end of her funeral on Saturday 31st December 2011 which brought smiles to everyones face - love you and miss you Mum x
I first heard Splish Splash in a bar in Singapore in the late 50s and thought it was a bit trite, but the voice was there. I also heard his Queen of the Hop and Sharin' Sharon with the same results. But then he produced Dream Lover which I really enyoyed as a piece of pop. But "Mack" sealed it for me. I bought several of his LPs in the early 60s, including This is Darin and Twist as US imports, and Clementine and Guys and Dolls sealed it for me. From there it was all terrific.
While rock 'n'roll was raging (which I loved too) came Bobby Darin, a new talent, who had just 14 years left in which to cram his career. But what a career. This won him a Grammy for the best record of 1960, he was nominated for an Oscar, and had great hits like Beyond the Sea, Clementine, If I were a Carpenter etc. And a treasure trove of standards.
Luckily he made a great number of records. a lot of which are on here. He has a star on Hollywood Boulevard. Second only to Sinatra for me.
I have to ask, who are all these people he name drops in this song? I guess they were famous at some point, either that or friends of whoever wrote the song.
@dragonpullman23 Jenny Diver, Suky Tawdry and Lucy Brown were all characters in the musical that this song comes from (The Threepenny Opera, by Bertolt Brecht).
Oddly, Lotte Lenya was not a character; she was a real person who often PLAYED Jenny, and also the wife of Kurt Weill, the composer of the score to the musical.
The original words to the song are German, so English singers have often felt free to, uh, take liberties with the lyrics for dramatic and/or comedic effect.
I find that this music is more of my style rather than the music listened to today. I was born in 94 so im generations ahead. I don't wish I lived in the era of this music however because life was difficult. But I'm thankful that this type of music exists today for people like me, and for the people who grew up with it.
@lolpranksta To not sound to samey, Thats how I feel too, But I'm also glad that the internet was created so I could track down these and other great songs.

@Diegercvb I don't remember much about the 50's. I remember sitting at the top of the stairs. daddy always had the radio on. I would sit there and tap my feet and try to be quiet. :)
@Diegercvb YeaH. lol. you can listen to just so much britney. Most of the "stars" today won't be remembered in 40 years. just shows you, class never goes out of style. Peace and afro grease. :)
@istillbdaman hey hey hey now...lets not go bashing other musical interests now... i fucking love house, techno, and dubstep, as well as Louis Armstrong, Oasis, and the Beatles... sounds to me like you need to expand upon your musical palette. either that or your just a negative Nancy... is that what you want? everyone to start calling you negative Nancy? hahahahah
