stop with the hatter comments. he is actually really good, i have heard quite a bit of fiddle music, and its not easy to think up a good OBS. i can say that knowing because i am a fiddle player too.
he appears to have a lot tension built up in his neck, jaw, shoulders, and upper back. highly doubtful he is classically trained. notice with the bow girp. he never puts his pinky down on the stick and he has a chicken wing for his bow arm. the "chinrest" is not a chin rest, but a jaw rest. props on the flexible wrist.
@slviolinist why are you coming on here with all this shit; there is no need for a synopsis of his technique, and who cares if he's classically trained or not he can play a mean fiddle.
@Cocoheadedcannibal it was simply a reply to others thoughts on being classically trained or not. yes, he does play a mean fiddle. there is no need to be an ass about it.
This guy needs to learn the goddam tune and then get an imagination transplant. Watch Vasser Clements to see how it's done!! For the record he does not have a classically trained grip on that bow (not that there's anything wrong with that per se).
@EblockShorty you need an ear transplant, and this comments page needs to be purged of all 'classically trained' references. Your comment is nothing but a precious, elitist bunch of pretentious bullcrap.
@tsquiers so what, there is some improv allowed in fiddle playing - there are so many different versions of the SAME fiddle tune, and who is to say which one is correct?
@tsquiers Glad somebody else noticed! Ad libbing is required but first you gotta play the tune, fer chrissakes!
And your ad libs have to be musically coherent and add something to the performance. I guess this guy is champion of not playing the tune and sometimes going pretty fast. There are hundreds of clips of this and many of them leave this in the dust for speed and musicality; some of the youngsters just leave me with my mouth hanging open.
"Championship" fiddlers have won some amateur competition somewhere. Want to hear some REAL fiddlin? Search for Vernon Derrick, now deceased, formerly with the Stanleys, Jimmy Martin, Hank, Jr., Hank III and others. I'm not knocking Danny boy. He won the competition and was probably the best fiddler in the contest.
You know, people keep commenting on the wrist, but I think that movement is made both possible and neccesary from the specific way he's gripping the bow like that.
@Chefodeath a lot of professionals grip their bow kinda like that but don't necessarily bend their wrist that much, it must just be his unique playing style
Jeeeeez - that is the LOOSEST wrist I've ever seen! LOL Looks like it's double jointed!!! Guy plays with a western swing twang sound to his bowing.....nice
this song takes skill even on the beginner lvl of the song, this guy does fairly well but hes still doing a simple version of the song that a 10yr old could play. kinda sad really tho he is fairly good
Man, you're right--that is the most incredible right hand and wrist 'form' I ever saw! That is also one of the hardest parts to master in fiddle playing.
