i am happy to live in oxford, down the road from his old home...R.I.P Dan Patch and thanks to the Messner family for restoring and showing tours of the old barn.
I was on the United states trotting association site and viewed a film of Dan Patch, it's very old, hope you can watch it.Thanks for this beautiful video,I love Standardbreds and own three retired ones.
What a wonderful tribute to Dan Patch! I am an elementary teacher at Marion W. Savage Elementary in Savage, MN. If you are ever in the area, we would love for you to visit our school. Do you do school residencies?
I believe you can see the remnants of Dan Patch's track. Google "Savage, MN" in google maps and then find Quentin Ave and Highway 13. I believe the outline of the track is just north of this intersection...
I say it was sheer unfair that the record was broken I say unless the road was in the same condition as Dan patches road it should not be considered broken
oh thank you so much for making this about Dan Patch because i knew almost nothing about it! very sad at the end when the Parson died a day after Dan Patch...very sad, do u know if they were burried near eachother? i was just curious. great video (just like your others) 5/5 =)
Because other owners were unwilling to race against him, Marion Savage took him around the country and put on exhibitions. He always drew large crowds, and occasional broke his own records. 1:55, though considered unofficial, was his fastest time at pacing a mile, a record that stood for 39 years.
1:55 was Dan Patch's time for pacing the mile. One minute 55 seconds. The record stood for many years, and if ground conditions had not improved drastically, I doubt it would ever have been broken.
would love to get a copy of ur ballad abt dan patch and poco lena and any other of ur songs on cd could u please contact me. we live in the uk and wld be happy to pay the cost of cd and any postage.thank you
Many Thanks! There is a book you can buy through the Dan Patch Historical Society in Minnesota that comes with a 9 minute DVD with close to 100 yr old movies of Dan in action. If I would have had it when I put this together, I would have included a couple of those clips.
Thanks for the comp! carlykaiser took an early version of my song "The Great Match" about Ruffian an did a video that predates mine here. I'm working on putting together enough pictures to do this with some other songs of mine. It may take another month before I finish the next one.
i dont reall know much about dan patch but thats a great movie! you should make one about like seabiscuit or someone too! the one about ruffian made me cry..were you really there when she ended her career?
Actually, no. I had done tons of research, and started a song about her twice, and didn't like either one. Then I happened to come in contact with someone who was there. Her father took her there as a little girl. Her father happened to be a good friend of Leroy Jolley. Once I heard the story, I knew how I was going to start and finish the song. Third time is a charm!
I suppose I should add another little bit of trivia; many breeders were supersticious over the way Foolish Pleasure won the match race. Because of that, very few could be persuaded to breed their mares to him, and he ended up with a rather dismal career at stud. It was a sad ending for both horses. Do you know the final story about Ruffian's sire & dam? That's ironic as well.
nope..i know some stuff about ruffian but not a whole lot..all i know is shes the fastest filly to ever set foot on the race track (in my opinion)..what happened 2 her sire & dam?
It was 2 years after Ruffian's accident. Shennanigans, her dam coliced. She came out of surgery, thrashed about much like Ruffian did, and broke both front legs and had to be put down. 2 weeks after that Reviewer, her sire, broke a hind leg in a breeding accident. He survived the first cast OK, but fought coming to after it was replaced the first time and did unrepairable damage to it, and was destroyed 4 weeks after Shennanigans. So, within 2 years, both her sire and dam were gone also.
Beautifully presented, you really told the whole story. I love the guitar and the storytelling feel. I'm looking forward for the next one! Kirsi. Excellent work =)
Thankyou! This was another song I started, and didn't like how it was progressing. I set it aside for 6 weeks before coming up with the guitar melody, so I started the song over. I tried singing it first, but it wasn't working, so the spoken verses just kind of 'evolved' that way as I was writing it.
that was awesome! i really enjoyed that. i remember hearing about Dan Patch for the first time when i was little and watched 'So Dear to My Heart'. Danny is mentioned as an icon and the little boy in the film names his lamb after him so 'It can be a champion...just like Dan Patch." Awesome job. I really appreciate your work.
Many thanks. I have a VHS copy of that movie. I think Disney originally released it in 1948. Dan Patch did indeed travel around the country in his own private rail car while he was touring.
There is a new book that came out this past summer titled "The Great Dan Patch and the Remarkable Mr. Savage" by Tim Brady. I got mine from Barnes & Noble, but you can get a copy autographed by the author directly from the Dan Patch Historical Society in Minnesota. The book includes a short DVD of historic old movies of Dan Patch in action as well as a glimpse inside the indoor racing track.
Thanks for the comments. I started work on putting together for a different story song about a horse. Finding enough pictures to accompany the story becomes the most challenging part once the song is written.
Thanks!!! I currently have ten songs about different horses from the pages of history, and am currently doing research on a couple of others. I'm in the process of rounding up enough pictures to go with a song I wrote about a famous Quarter Horse, and that will probably be my next video post.
Ruffian, which you are already familiar with. Poco Lena, a famous Quarter Horse (cutting), Bamboo Harvester (aka, Mister Ed), Highland Dale (best known as Fury), Little Sorrel (Stonewall Jackson's mount), Baldy (General Meade's mount), Old Sam (a carraige horse that pulled cannons in the Civil War), One Bad Ass (based on the story circulating the net about a mule that killed a mountain lion) and the Uffington White Horse, which is actually a 3000 year old carving on a hillside in Great Britian.
I wrote a new one and posted the video as 'One Last Call' which is about the fire horses. I completed another new one this week called 'Billy Silver' which will be posted next week after some better pics arrive via snail mail. Billy Silver was Secretariat's pony horse. See what you started, seems I'm hooked on this format, LOL!

The best horse of this century is - ZENYATTA!
SugarTomAppleRoger 2 years ago
we'll see in a hundred years if anybody remembers Zenyatta? Dan Patch 1896 to 1916 and still remembered in 2010!
youbad67 2 years ago
youbad. I think that they will remember Zenyatta in 2110. However, for me, Dan Patch is much bigger a name than Zenyatta.
