Switek was never the same after Zito died. But what I never got is WHY wasn't Zito packing heat in that gym bag? His cover could've been blown at any time. Those guys were just standing there and he couldn't shoot 'em since he was no longer undercover? They just pumped him up with juice and hung him out to dry. One of the saddest moments in the series.
Why!!!!! Why are we subjected to crap like the real housewives, kardashians, and dog the bounty hunter!!!!!! When there was once TV like this out there......time machine to the 80's please!!!!!!!
Gotta agree with you, Krehlst5150. That scene is one of THE best in the entire series. Tear jerker. That's the kind of stuff that set MV apart from the crowd.
@sgtbender2000 I didn't even realize Zito had died because after season 2 of Miami Vice, I kinda gave up on the show because of the change of style by season 3 but I gotta find this entire episode.
I always felt kind of bad for Zito - he was usually the guy left to wait for backup, or making a fool of himself - and it seemed like John Diehl sensed that in deciding to leave. But that look on Switek's face when he embraces Zito - Diehl definitely left his mark on the show with that moment.
I saw this when it first aired. I was about 7 years old. I thought it was only the beginning of great drama on tv. I was wrong. It was the beginning of the end.
Miami Vice... probably the best drama tv show produced in 25 years. Not likely to be replicated or succeeded.
I Miss the Eighties....... Michael Mann approved mullets, Gators as pets, Awesome 5 o'clock shadow, Sheena Easton, Pastels and no socks, Sweet kit cars, 1 Explosion per episode, 100+ rounds shootout's, Samurai Latino lieutenant's w/ bad adolescent acne, And finally Awesomer MUSIC!!!!! F@&K the Future!!!! Bring back the 80's....
switek is looking at zito and he cannot believe he is dead...what a great scene in the history of TV....this was the best show in the HISTORY OF TV....debateme f you will...but so be it..this was the most dramatic show ever!
Been watching Miami Vice as often as possible since getting all 5 seasons few months back. Zito just died a few days ago. Damn it, why?!! You really begin to love all 6 or 7 main characters. I really feel for Switek. This is one of my favourite episodes. Like to think I am a tough guy, but... lump in throat, etc.
@Weakboy100 this episode makes me cry my ass off...i was 15-16 back in the day...and i'm 40 now and this episode makes me cry harder...i have best friend in my life...who i couldn't live without..!
I loved how they always had the perfect song playing for the best emotional scenes,,,this was a perfect example! Awesome, I remembering crying when I saw this. Thanks for the flashback to a great show and good times!
Man, Miami Vice was epic. Love the use of music in scenes, very deep show. Michael Mann should do a new tv show with the same kind of feel to it, i would love that.
fuck there i am...19 years, self proclaimed tough guy, hard-rock-guitarist, big hair, whiskey-fan...and a tears in my eye...fuck, miami vice is just great and that scene kicks me in the heart every single time i see it...why can´t they make stuff like that anymore...fuck sex and the city...
@Krehlst5150 i'm 40 years old NOW...and back in the day i was what 17-18...i cried my eyes out...then...we are human beings...things make us sad...and if we cry so fucking be it...
@Krehlst5150 damn right it does...miami vice is the best SHOW EVER IN THE HISTORY OF TV...it had everything..think about it..made you cry...laugh....!!
@BOURBONJULIO hahaha that's funny but wrong. I guess I was trying to point out I'm not the kind of guy you would expect to cry over a tv show. Looking back it was pretty stupid on my part.
@BOURBONJULIO That just made me burst out in a laugh, so high, that my dog crapped on the floor and tought that his time was up. Aaaah, that was a good one mate :)
Miami really knew how to play on emotions. The guy who played Zito actually wanted to kill his charactor so he could get more significant acting roles... But it's still sad as hell every time, he didn't deserve to die.
For me this is the beginning of the end for Vice. Just not the same without Stan and Larry together. They may not have been the stars but they were a helluva team!
Dig it, man. I see what you're saying. Larry and Stan were an important part o' the show. Since I knew that Larry was gonna bite it, I paid a lot of attention to him. It was sad.
This is one of the best scenes in the entire show. Really emotional. It left such an impression on me, that now (years later) I had to watch ALL of the episodes. And, of course, I just had to know what song was playing. "There's a River" by Steve Winwood is one helluva beautiful song.
@ROKUNIJUU Zito and Switek worked well together from a script perspective, both well-meaning single cops who somehow often ended up on the short end of the stick.
One of the top three scenes of the series, very emotional moment - a very poetic way to say goodbye to one of the key characters...similar to the little more dramatic moment when Crockett's wife is shot on stage
@rorikjunior Difference being that Crockett's wife being killed actually improved the show. Watch that episode after she is killed. As much as I liked Vice, I was glad when she died. Horrible storyline. They should have brought back Crockett's original wife. Better acting.
@mus1cat I would agree that the scriptwriters seemed somewhat undecisive as to how to continue the plot with Crockett and Caitlin, however, I do like Sheena Easton a lot and there was good chemistry between the two actors. Crocketts former wife was a bit depressing to watch, good acting but somehow too close to (my) reality. There are times, one could wish that you have to protect some attractive popstar even if she is bitchy..
one the most sad scenes of the show, the one that really stood out was the scene at the courthouse where Bruce Willis was aquited and Crockett was trying to assure the witness he would get him and she pulls out the gun and points it at Willis and Crockett says "Noooo" and you hear the shot go off and its goes dark awesome.......
WOW call me corny or whatever you want ,but I truly loved this post just those two minutes brought tears to my eyes. I loved this show when I was a kid. And thank you for posting who the song was by b/c I always wanted to know. BLESS PPL!
If you look close when SWITEK enters the heavy bag is still moving, must have just missed them my a minute or 2. if he didnt get the food, he would have made it to save Zito's life..michael mann always knew how to add those little things in the show, thats what made it so great.
Yeah, Zito died cause John Diehl wanted to leave the show to pursue a wrestling career. Then he came back to acting, and appeared in movies like Stargate.
but I guess it was a mistake to leave show like Miami Vice for boxing and then coming back to acting? I guess he was confused. Hmmm this is normal we all are confused some how.
@MrBillyLaw Interviews at the time with John Diehl suggested he was also tired of living in Miami year round for the show. The weather (just brutal in summer time) got to him particularly, much like it did for Gregory Sierra, who played Lou Rodriguez.
I just saw this two part episode tonight on dvd. Man oh man, Micheal Talbott's performance in this scene devastated me. Miami Vice is the greatest. RIP Zito,
Classic scene! Terrible synthesizer pad Winwood was using back then - but it's such a sad and beautiful song and the perfect background music for this tragic scene. To my mind, THE most tragic scene of all the Miami Vice episodes.
Nowadays you don't find that anymore in any tv series. They're all so slick, not edgy and most of the time simply pretty boring. Example? CSI Miami
During their 5 year run, Vice only killed off two of their main characters Rodriguez and Zito. Great scene and ending! This scene is also featured in the season 4 episode "A Bullet For Crockett."
This scene is taken from the episode "Down for the Count - Part 1" (Season 3).
The reason why Zito had to die in this episode was because actor John Diehl (the actor who played Zito) wanted to leave the show opting for a more creative opportunity in theather.
