To add onto my comment a bit, when Emily Bronte wrote this it caused a scandal. People expecting a normal romance were instead treated to something scandalous - here's Cathy, a married woman, cavorting with a lover. Back then, this novel caused an outcry - today it's like nothing. The deterioration of society.
The irony is... Heathcliff the adopted son survived the other 2 siblings and took control over their inheritance and descendants. Is this what the father wanted or imagined?
@twiwonder the older catherine, but as a child............ in the book when the ghost of catherine grabs lockwood's hand at the beginning, she does so in her child like form, because thats how she really is, a young girl who loves the moors and is in love with heathcliff,
@iziiluvsedward no way. he's gorgeous and I love TVD, but his eyes and demeanor and presence and voice aren't Heathcliff enough for me. he doesn't have that hardness
If we are still talking about other actors that the acting chops to play Heathcliffe, I can definitely picture Stephen Moyer in this role but still Ralph Fiennes plays Heathcliffe to a perfection
I love that look on Cathy's face just before Heathcliff appears in the shot with her; she can feel him before she sees him. I also love the pan flute at 8:02. It's almost like a wild fanfare, a rejoicement over the fact that they've been reunited.
Ralph Fiennes did an amazing job! I loved the fact that he could put a dark aura into this character. (Zac Efron would be a horrible Heathcliff) *sigh* i wish i still had my book...well atleast i have my Sense & Sensibility book...SHOUT OUT TO ANY JANE AUSTEN FANS OUT THERE <3
I love this film and the book too. I don't know whether this version is better than 2009 one though. Also how come all CathysHeathCliff's videos have completely different view numbers when it is a film? Do some people skip some? Or watch a few a hundred times? :)
Oh dear. I strongly suggest you read the book if you haven't; I've read and studied it in depth twice, and this movie still confused me with its abrupt scene changes and the cutting of many important scenes.
omg, I know it's got nothing to do w/ the story, but you've got to admit that this music is terribly ennerving. It gets on my nerve, it really does. grrrrr
Catherine could not bear to marry heathcliff, because Hindley had reduced him very low, and marrying him would be degrading. she wanted a high, respectable social status, and so she married Edgar Linton, a wealthy magistrate !
stupid really, but she really threw away her love fr riches and status !
actually that's not true, yes she accepts Linton's proposal, but she realizes she's been wrong when she talkes to Nelly, but heathcliff only hears her say that she's going to marry Linton, and then goes awy, Cathrine becomes very sick, and Linton's there for her, and she in beliveing Heathcliff wont come back agrees to marry Linton, Heathcliff actually comes back very soon after they are married.
I agree with a few here if say that the effects are a little old-fashioned here. But, ah, bless tem, they did well with what they had. Anyway, thei kiss on the moor, that is filmed so differently to kisses now.
This movie kinda pissed me off. The ending is just ugh. Technically, yes it's true but the book had sooo much more mystery and that's what made it so eerie and timeless. The fact that nobody really knows what happened to Heathcliff.
I have mixed feelings about it... Although I liked how "eerie and timeless" Heathcliff's death was in the book, as you said, I also warmed to how they portrayed him as having joined her beyond the grave. I just wish they did it in with better effects. lol.
Where's Joseph in all of these? Lol he's quite a comic character...he's always getting pissed off lol, Edgar's grief made me sad, Heathcliff's violence made me get angry. Catherine 1's stupidity made me get angry too lol, Ellen actually made me mad bcos she never really helped both Cathy's make good choices!! She just tagged along pretending to be sum sort of confidant or guide or whatever. Anyway...the book is awesome!
thank you so much for putting the movie on you tube ! i am loved the book and I now that i saw the movie i think it's great too! there isn't a better love story of Cathy's and Heathcliff's except maybe romeo and Juliet
I guess it would depend on the "vibe" a director was going for, but I say...
GOTHIC/SEXY/EERIE HEATHCLIFF= STUART TOWNSEND
(Watch the Slept So Long/concert in Queen of the Damned, you'll see why)
BRUTE/MANLY/STRONG HEATHCLIFF= VIGGO MORTENSEN
But NOONE will ever be able to surpass Ralph Fiennes as Heathcliff...he was able to be gothic, sexy, eerie, brute, manly, and strong ALL AT THE SAME TIME! :) That is a rare gift that he has...
I know what you mean but I think he did a good job playing a today /teenage version of Valmont of Dangerious Liaisons in Cruel Intentions which is supposed to be a very mean charakter. Well, okay, they made him a lot more likeable in the teenage version, but if they ever again make a modern version of it (MTV did, with Katherine Heigl) and turn Heathcliff more into a rebel character they should use Ryan.
Come on, he has some evilness in him, he cheated on his poor wife. ;-)
For all the people who keep making comments about Zac Efron playing Heathcliff...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I just had to laugh! He is DEFINATELY not man enough to play Heathcliff...Ralph Fiennes was a perfect Heathcliff...ALL MAN and completely mesmerizing.
No way!!! Do you know what depth it would take to PLAY such a character????? Whoever suggested that does not grasp the character of Heathcliff AT ALL!! And I laugh with you!
Ah, agreed. Richard Armitage would make a good Heathcliff in the dark and brooding way, but I think he's a bit too attractive to be Heathcliff tbh. And 'Filch' as Joseph would be good. Lol.
I love it how Heathcliff kind of eventually start to care about Hareton - though he doesn't admit it to himself - probably because Hareton reminds him of his younger self. He originally sets out to make Hareton suffer the same fate Hindley made him suffer as a boy, but in the end they begin to bond subtly. It's not like Heathcliff ever learns to love Hareton like a son, but at least he learns not to hate him, which is already a major achievement for him.
Yeah...I agree with you, GoodbyeDragonfly. I think Heathcliff thought that if he treated Hareton the way that he had been treated, Hareton would turn out to be just like him. Then when Hareton turns out to be a caring person, it blows his theory all to hell. Heathcliff finally realizes that it wasn't the way others had treated himself that made him like he is...he realizes that to be good or bad was a CHOICE.
The irony is that Hareton boo-hooed the most for Heathcliff when he died. I think that Heathcliff was some what fond of Hareton in a twisted way because he saw himself in Hareton - trying to survive in a heartless environment.
the ghost cathy looks angelic and by the way she is wearing the dress that muslim girls wear all over the world. i dont understand then why the world hates so much for the girls to cover their body properly? isnt it itself a racism or to a wider sence Extremism?
