holy shit. Normally when they say insane ending, I was expecting a crazy quick solo. But that was out of this world. It was calm but monumental. I could hear that ending all day and be in nirvana.
You know what the weird thing is...? His other clips have a cut at about 3 minutes in as well! I'm detecting a pattern...
Let's thank Vince here for posting these amazing clips, and having mastered the art of starting a new clip on his (phone?)cam, which probably doesn't allow for clips over 3 mins, pretty darn quick.
don't ever ever, as long as you live compare anything John mayer does to Sam Cooke, ever again.I really like both, but you cannot compare Mayer's vocals to Sam cooke's it just can't be done.
He's not anywhere near the same level obviously, but clearly he has listened to him and also Otis Redding. You're right, he is very different in sound. But in phrasing..? And this song emphasizes the sixth quite a bit---like You Send Me, or Lenny by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Sam Cooke was one in a million, don't mistake my point. This Mayer song isn't really much of a composition, but it is an excellent performance, and it owes a huge debt to the evolution in music of black phrasing.
truth with music lies in personal preference. so whats the big deal with referencing sam cooke when talking about mayers vocal style? do not over pay tribute to one man, its impossile to produce absolute argument in music.imho
one thing I love about Mayer's way of playing is that he can mend both the rythmic and the solo parts of a song...this song is a perfect illustration of that! 5 stars!
man those people there are lucky!!! I've played there before and remember it being a very small room, probably could comfortably fit around 50 people, but with John there they probably squeezed in around 200 or so!
he's really one of the best guitarist around today.. it's not that he's the only one.. but he brings a smarter view of music to the public.. there are a lot of great young guitarist but not everyone reaches a wide audience.. we owe john..
I have so many similarities in taste of music and in thought that some times I feel I know John Mayer or I am John Mayer. It's like I can predict his words and when he feels the music on stage I strangely feel it in the same way too. He is the reason I am learning about music.
I feel ya Cory. I feel ya. You wanna hear something that'll make you cry? Listen to Mayer, John Legend, Corinne Bailey Rae at the Grammys. That perfromance... Jesus... I swear, it's the sweetest nine minutes you can spend. Well... almost. If you know what I mean ;)
I saw John Mayer in 2002 at a small dive in Iowa City playing to a crowd of about 20 people. I actually started playing guitar after seeing him. Months later after that show, Mayer blew up big time...everyone knew who he was. And its funny now, even though my tastes in music have considerably expanded, I can still always go back to John Mayer and enjoy him as if it was the first time I saw him play at that hole in the wall bar. I love this youtube clip...
Is there effects on the solo? Sounds like it's getting a slight OD or something. Or it could be the amazing sustain of his guitar. It sounds like a sax during the solo too.
the production and song writing on this album is amazing. to bad he came out with that teeny bopper lust nugget album first. this new album is much much more mature. grown folks music.
my post is a general comment, not just regarding his songs. I mean most songs in general are similar to past songs. It's just the way it's always been.
my post is a general comment, not just regarding his songs. I mean most songs in general are similar to past songs. It's just the way it's always been.
it's true; in terms of raw technical skill i wouldn't put him as one of the best... however the combination of factors; his ability to play great and sing ever better, his amazing talent in writing original music all add towards him being a complete guitarist, thus making him one of the best.
simply being able to shred and play insane rifts does not make one a great guitarist in all standards...
hes a good song-writer obviously, but as guitar goes, and he can def play, but hes only average compared to others. not even close to the best of our time, thats crazy talk.
and blue is the best colour of the year, everyone has their own opinions, let them think what they want. If John Mayer is the best guitarist they have ever heard, let them be. btw, watch him play a life concert, he's not a shredder because he has patience added with a great ear, he's a genious when it comes to jamming. Watch him play live at concerts. He's not just an average guitar player. Name the top 5 guitar players from the past 10 years, I dont see how he couldnt be on that list.
acoustic/blues musicians still performing in the past 10yrs: tommy emmanuel, phil keaggy, eric clapton, adrian legg, even billy gibbons from zz top is a phenomenal blues guitar player. i'm not saying these are the best of our time, but just saying that there are too many amazing guitarists. it's pretty easy for mayer to not be one of the top 5 guitar players.
That might be the most impressive acoustic solo, ever.

It got cut because back in 2006, most digital cameras couldn't record more than 3min of video at a time.
But in essence, I'm just glad it got recorded in some form so I can watch over and over... even 3 years on.

ONE really good thing about John Mayer is that his voice sounds the same in the recorded studio MP3 and when he sings it live.
