It truly is beautiful; one of the most wonderful things about watching DAAS was their ability to randomly blow you away with something amazing like this.
Bottle is the other obvious one, I have no doubt that it would be viewed as one of the great Australian songs of the era if it hadn't been tucked down the back of an album by a zany comedy troupe.
Actually in real life - Paul is shy and reserved. Richard is outgoing and Tim is not arrogant - he is a geniunely nice guy. having meet all three outside of their " tv personas". There was no falling out over the end of DAAS, after 10 years the whole dougs thing got tired and old, like all of us they wanted to move on, new careers, jobs and families.
@CabinGirlTwinkle plus tim had MS and wanted to be closer to home and wanted to stop because it was affecting what he could do on stage he said 'that he could do what the doug's needed me to do' or something to that effect........he only said it publicly this year
i think they only broke up because of tim. there were in england or something...but i heard richard and paul dont overly like tim i dont know how true that is based of the whole grape vine thing..
I read it was because Tim had a couple of young kids and wanted to stay in Australia, and Paul and Richard felt they had done all they could do with DAAS in Aus. and wanted to base in England.
yeah something like that but apprently there was also a falling out between paul/richard and tim. my sister met them and how they are on camera thats how they are. Tims a bit arrogant, pauls very funny and cheeky, and richard is very shy and reserved. i met paul and richard. paul was a blast, very cheeky mucking around and that was only 2 years ago. and when i met richard and i made him blush when i gave him a kiss on the cheek. very polite richard is.
Dont think gesture meens anything. If you have a look, tim tucks his thumb into his belt when thay are singing serouse songs.
in the early days, paul wrung his hands. Im guessing this is wbout when he stoped doing that, but before thay were using mike stands (wich gives you somthing to do with your hands)
yeah your right if you think about it hes been all hyped up during the whole thing now hes gotta settle it stops the hands from shaking. professionals put the hands flat on their sides to prevent nerves. and he probably didnt want to do what tim does so does that not to copy.
I've noticed the hand gesture Paul does in a few of the serious songs and have wondered about it. Is it the anarchy symbol he was doing? Johnny Depp used to do it sometimes in promotional shots back in his jump street days and it made me wonder then as well (me old? nay!)
this is an amazing and incredibly touching song, and demonstrates a perfect contrast from their more comedic performances. the talent and diversity in boys performances never ceases to amaze me... if only i could have seen them live in person...
by the way is it true they are bring out a best of dvd???
Their harmonies are TO DIE FOR, it gives me chills! Paul's voice stands out the most though... in a good way :)
This is the first clip I've seen where Richard is almost looking as hot as Paul, only in long shots though, in the closeups Paul's still the hottest, even with that hair. ;)
Just love this. Once tried to get Blue and had the record shop basically tell me I was nuts it didn't exist. So glad to know it wasn't just me. Does anybody know where there might be a copy of DAAS singing The Queen and The Soldier? I heard it at one of their live concerts and it was real goose bump material.
He flew through the flak on the first attack, The bomb bay open on a missiles back. Here's the payload, he crudely spat, "I am the airman." And the General sighed "This is our last stand, Let every man say 'Amen', For we'll not see daylight again. And tonight we'll meet our God, boys." Well the airman plunged into the pine, And the sailor drowned in the briny brine, And the soldier in haste put his foot on a mine.
Thank god, someone else that's heard of Blue. I have a copy of it on tape somewhere, it's not a good copy, but it's a copy nontheless. Some fantastic tracks on it. I'm just pissed it never got released!!
This song is fantastic, but hey, did these boys ever go wrong?!?
"With a Downward blast from his doughy arse" with 100% accuracy is the line. This song is also on the unreleased album blue, and lyrics printed in the DAAS songbook.
Is the first line Paul sings "with the downwind blast from his doughy ass?!" I can't work it out and the other day I thought that might've been it. Although the rest of the song's serious and sad though...maybe just typical DAAS!
DAAS Warsong FTW!

there are so many great songs from the 2 series of Kapital, when are the ABC going to release them on DVD???
The DAAS clips from the Big Gig were a good start, but still lots of work to do people!
Back to my old, slightly worn, VCR tapes I guess.

Add in Little Gospel Song (its a hymn for goodness sake!) and you've got quite a spectrum of songs.
Agree about the vocals on this. Their best I think.

Love how the same people can write something so haunting and 'I Fuck Dogs'. Great vocal performance.

Out of all of them, Paul just seems to have the nicer natural melody in his voice. Timmy and Rich are still awesomeness though.

What a haunting song.
Does anyone know where I can get the guitar chords for this song?
F15AUS 3 years ago
That 12 string messes me up. I play it like this although I know I'm missing a few changes and the chords are probably totally out.
With a [G] downwind blast from his doughy ass,
Like a [C] lance of fire he shot [Am] up the mast.
As he [G] mumbled blasphemous epitaphs,
[Em] "I am the sailor."
And the [D] captain cried with a [C] mighty heave-ho
"Enemy sighted on the starboard bow.
[G] Load your cannons, let 'em [D] go.
For [C] God is on our [Em] side, boys."

In the dust and sand of a foreign land.
With hands afire he buried his friend.
He beat his brow and cursing foul he said:
"I am the soldier"
And the private laughed as he reached the bluff,
His gun barrel smoking, enough's enough.
We've done more damage than old Macduff.
And God is full of pride, boys.
