@MagiMysteryTour I think he is speculating that, if not for the dark age we might by now have developed vessels capable of relativistic travel - we would be nearly 2000 years ahead of where we are now, so perhaps its not impossible. At near light speeds it would in fact be possible to colonise much of the naked eye visible sky within a thousand years. A.C. Clark could never be accused of being ignorant, nor a choreographer of ignorance, I'm sure he gave this statement much thought.

Easy to check ancient artefacts for evidence of electroplating & as unheard of, I doubt this was its function.

But by demonstrating with grape juice instead of a more effective electrolyte (e.g. vinegar), my background in Food Technology kicked-in, and I wonder if instead of a battery, this might not have been the oposite, a method to remove the electric charge during fermentation (e.g. in wine making). Electric charge during fermentation? I have done plenty of fermentation and was not aware of any problem or opportunity connected to electricity.

However there are. E.g. most cooks are aware that broth can go sour during storms & similarily milk has a tendency to go sour and curdle. Thus my suggestion is that the container might "decharge" rather than charge... and insulate the contents during fermentation. However it would require testing, as it is just an idea. Runi

Why would a case for a small document be made of two dissimilar metals? People don't use different materials for any object without a reason. Copper, iron and ceramic make sense as an electric cell. If they had used wine vinegar rather than grape juice the effect would have been stronger still.

It didn't work when it was found. Right. Do you throw things out when they are in working order? Archaeologists expect that a good proportion of the objects they find will be broken or incomplete.

It's not a case of it being broken. The copper cylinder was completely covered in bitumen. No current could be drawn without modifying the design. It wasn't a "battery".
