god we were so fournate to be young and beautiful in the 80's! Now we are all haggard , fat and ugly. Oh well life goes on. Cooking and cleaning last, looks don't!!!!
What the......The Duff sisters did a remake of this song. I don't believe anybody who wasn't born when an original song came out should be allowed to do a cover of it. That's just not right.
Los Angeles was a blast back then. Just out of high school, going to Northridge and partying all over town on the weekends in my Toyota Celica. So much fun. The music scene was awesome - so many great local bands and so much energy and inertia. The place was a boom town. Now its just a sad, overcrowded third world reflection of what it was (and everyone I know has moved to the Pacific NW or Colorado). Still, songs like this shoot me back as soon as I hear that opening.
Holy Moly! What an ear for melody Jane has. Incredible song. The writing itself, arrangement, instrumentation, production/mix, and all these little hidden gems: a tamborine hits a few times in strange places, inventive bass line & guitar in the Middle 8....Wow! And all done by a group of very young girls making they're first big single. So glad this never got tossed away & forgotten. Brilliant job Go-Go's!!
Why the pointless debate over 80s vs 90s music? Good music is good music, and every day of every week of every year, people are making good music. Listen and enjoy. Who gives a damn what year it was recorded?
I wonder what it would've been like being 18 yrs old in 1980 and living in Los Angeles around that time. A lot of good music was coming out of California and London during that era. This song was released in June of 81, and MTV started in August 81. 90% of what I listen to is 80s, I keep my XM Satellite radio set on all the best 80s channels. There will never be another era of music and good times like that era.If I had been born 10 yrs earlier it would've put me in the right age group
This was a great song. I agree with the postings in support of 80s music; it was the best. I was in my mid-late 20s during the 90s, and can tell you that it does not compare. No way! Bring back the 80s!
i'm so glad i was a teenager in the 80's. the 60's, 70's and 80's is where the music was, not too much good music today but we can always remember the good ol days. Thanks for posting!
@bertmustin With both Joann Jett and Lita Ford there...I would have to disagree with you. But no matter what, they (the Go-Go's) should get a bio-pic. They are THAT good. (mind you, dating a girl in the 80's who absolutely LOVED them...I'm kinda biased ;) )
the fact that one of them in the band wrote this about their boyfriend is great. It was the rythym guitar player (black hair).... it was about her relationship that she wanted kept secret and the song became a hit... kind of like Bukowski asking you to sneak a pack of cigarettes through the register scanner and saying: "Don't worry, no one will ever know." And then he puts it in a book that gets published.
@TheArizonaicetea I know its real easy to look back with rosy glasses, between naive kids "Oh why couldn't I be in that generation" As if it was all candy canes and gum drops, then the Adults dont help neither with the Amnesia they seem to have.Point blank this is a happy upbeat song in itself and it reminds of happy times when I was a kid,and also I remembr us kids being scared into never taking rides from strangers ",And also drugs were big too and in the news. Every genratn has good and bad
Now this is something girls can relate to! It's fun and reminiscient of Cali! I don't even understand Katy Perry's new video, which is supposedly about 'California Gurls'. It's just strange...
I remember one time back in 1982 while sitting in a park necking with my girlfriend (now my wife) we saw a convertible car filled with half a dozen screaming whacky chicks flying some kind of strange multi-colored flag high in the air, careening through the park at high speed. That incident always reminded me of this great video and I think that those screaming chickie-poos were really wannabe Go-Go's.
@alexaadap Yep thanks to my family they taught me real music from the 80s. why was I born in this generation, hopefully one day people will open there eyes and there ears....
Best video EVER!!! The 80's,, five girls in a convertable.. great song. And i love the attitude.. i'm young, i'm cute, and on top of the world... Love this. The 80's rock forever.
As a side note: drivign in a convertable: can't do it like that anymore.. You'd have 15 LA squad cars pulling you over in a 'high risk' take down to give you tickets for not wearing seat belts!
@xvoy2002 Oh man that cracked me up!! You are so right about the Police acting that way! Such silly things...such innocent things that don't amount to much but it does today doesn't it! Take me back to the 80's and leave me there!!!

@TheArizonaicetea I'll tell you what tea,the 80s may not have been 'innocent' but it was the decade that experienced the last death wriggle of Rock n Roll. Straight down ever since.
An often unreconized classic. Certainly wasn't an easy song to compose, although it sounds pretty simple. One of those tunes that you always listen to when it comes on the radio. Great stuff.
The 80s were definitely not innocent. But they were a far cry less cynical and self conscious that the present day. While the Go Gos were not saints, there's a lack of pretentiouness in this video, it's not choreographed to the point of being robotic. That is the difference. People were willing to be themselves even if it was a bit dorky at times...
no boobs, bellys or hi cut shorts.this is the essence of 80s.Loads of fashion just not exploitive ,just fresh and fun.Excuse me while I press play again...........
@TheArizonaicetea everybody knows the 80s werent innocent, people are saying when the good times were, good songs, good bands, evrybody did drugs or almost evrybody did, thats how all bands wrote their songs, getting high and drunk
Yea, I sure miss the 80's. Those were so free-spirited years (ie, hanging out with friends, dancing at clubs, the style of clothing was unique unlike 50's, 60's and 70's). I was in my teens and early twenties at the time. Somehow I wish that trend would return. It was just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure so many songs of this style have yet to be created and enjoyed by so many. It was cut too short. I hate trends. 80s music had a unified theme. Today's music trend is so disconnected.
Before there was No Doubt, Garbage, or any of those other female lead singer bands.......there was the Go Go's. This was pure New Wave. They paved the way for those other bands that came along in the 1990's.
This song just makes me feel like the song just came out. I know we are have our special times, but my times were the 80s and loved every moment of that decade.
I wonder how loaded these girls were when they were making this video? My best guess: had some high grade reefer when the shoot started, then the crew started feeding them drinks during the rest of the day, then he gave them some more coke and alcohol at the end. Look how happy they are in that fountain at the end of the vid?
No kidding!!!! I thought my parents were freaky being stuck in the 50's. Now I know why. The 80's haven't ended for me yet. I'm still stuck there!!!!
@suspectVandal I'm assuming you mean a drinker of alcohol by "munter". She sure as hell aint ugly. I'm not sure BethBerlin understood your statement. That term can mean more than one thing in English depending on which continent you are living.
@suspectVandal Cool. I'm from the USA, but have lived in Europe and South America for much of my life. I roomed with a brit girl for a year. I know how dialects can effect language. I had to really look up "munter" to be honest with you. What part of the globe are you from?
@philaboston I'm not the expert on this. My friends across both ponds (I'm a Yank), say it only means she liked to drink alcohol. It does not in any way say anything about her looks. I think most agree she is adorable.
@Kellogs43able Yeah. But I liked her much more before she lost all the weight. I liked her natural beauty with some curves. Her face was cuter when fuller. Just me. I understand the biz. They have to keep the weight down. Anyway, love this song, and Belinda is a beauty.
I always loved the Go-Go's. It's s weird that when i was 18- I , along with my friends -
thought Belinda Carlisle was always pretty but - a bit on the pudgy side- (never fat. ) I look at this video now and wonder - what the hell were we thinking!!!???? She was gorgeous!.
Belinda actually got better w age-then she married that Atty.-this song brings back some good memories-and still does sound fresh

@TheBerdinator Point well taken. Not to mention a good portion of what is popular today are remakes/sampled from '80s pop culture.
There was so much originality back then.

A hot female rock band having fun on the streets of LA in a '60 Buick convertable. Does it get any better than that?

I wonder how loaded these girls were when they were making this video? My best guess: had some high grade reefer when the shoot started, then the crew started feeding them drinks during the rest of the day, then he gave them some more coke and alcohol at the end. Look how happy they are in that fountain at the end of the vid?

Belinda Carlisle was quite a little munter wasnt she??
suspectVandal 1 year ago
@suspectVandal
No, she was adorable and your criticisms are why she, and so many other women, have eating disorders in the USA.
BethBerlin 1 year ago
@suspectVandal I'm assuming you mean a drinker of alcohol by "munter". She sure as hell aint ugly. I'm not sure BethBerlin understood your statement. That term can mean more than one thing in English depending on which continent you are living.
cesar1963able 1 year ago
@cesar1963able Thanks for clearing that up, I meant of course she looked like she enjoyed a drink! Fun Boy Three did this best!
suspectVandal 1 year ago
@suspectVandal Cool. I'm from the USA, but have lived in Europe and South America for much of my life. I roomed with a brit girl for a year. I know how dialects can effect language. I had to really look up "munter" to be honest with you. What part of the globe are you from?

@cesar1963able Im living in Scotland but was brought up in malaysia and Australia, still live in Australia often!

@cesar1963able What does "Munter" mean?
philaboston 1 year ago
@philaboston I'm not the expert on this. My friends across both ponds (I'm a Yank), say it only means she liked to drink alcohol. It does not in any way say anything about her looks. I think most agree she is adorable.

belinda carlisle posed for playboy...she could probably do it again now....
Kellogs43able 1 year ago
