I was stationed aboard the USS Tripoli, I was security also at Coranado Island base where PBR's and amphibious craft were stationed before WestPac tours. I met a few friends in PBR there. I good friend of mine had two boats blown out beneath him and once was the lone survivor on his boat. Very sad, it about broke my heart.
In 1969, my brother was stationed aboard this vessel, serving as a cook.
Gary had a rating of third class petty officer at the time.
He spoke of the many times the ships crew were summoned by the alarm of "general quarters" to defend against an approaching enemy craft loaded with explosives.
He survived, only to return home and succumb to a fatal heart attach at the age of 33.
