  • shoot, i'd love to order a copy. how'd you get a hold of it? what film is it?

  • its called The Duke is Tops .I left a message on your homepage.

  • stellar! thanks! I'll look it up and let you know.

  • They are not the Delfonics, but they do make you tap your feet.

  • Great stuff! It's always nice to see and hear a tiple in the lineup. Good combination with the tenor guitar.

  • "They are so talented I wish bands today could live up to some of these phenomenal bands of yesterday! Love the Cats and the Fiddle!"

    That would require Talent.

  • what a band! Fantastic

  • have you ever met that funny reefer man?

  • I do know that song,,,very funny

  • Sidney Bechet "Viper Mad" is great too!!!

  • That's such a unique line up of instruments: strings bass, tiple, 4 string tenor guitar and six strings archtop guitar. It sure made for a great sound. I guess the "fiddle" in the groups name was actually he bass fiddle.

  • "That's such a unique line up of instruments: strings bass, tiple, 4 string tenor guitar and six strings archtop guitar." A great band who influenced this band and included a tiple were the Spirits Of Rhythm. And the offshoots of the Spirits Of Rhythm were really good too (such as the 1940 studio and radio recordings Lionel Hampton made with Spirits tiple player and singer Douglas Daniels, and the 1942 session Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart did with Leo Watson, then still of the Spirits).

  • It's an interesting line up yes, but there is no six-string archtop anywhere in the mix. There is a fours string base, a ten-string tiple, an ukulele and a four-string tenor guitar.

  • Why haven't these guys been inducted into the Vocal Hall of Fame? they've always been a favorite of mine. Yeah, man!

  • I really love this band. I play a CD we have of theirs at work at least once a week....

  • Unbelievable! I put in Cats and the Fiddle and they actually came up. Great!

  • me too!

  • One of the best bands of all time! Check out more of there tunes if you are reading this

  • They came into stage within 3 seconds. Impressing :)

  • I'm a Jazz aficionado and I can tell you that they are one of the most talented, yet unknown jazz band of the 1930's.

  • Man, this is what music is about

  • Thanks for posting this...amazing!

  • That right there is the stuff ... If every band played like this the world would be a better place ... Thanks so much for posting this ...

  • Thank you so much!

  • You can Really Hear the Doo wop in that early performance Cool.

  • WOW! I LOVE THE CATS AND FIDDLE! I am so happy for this rare video! Thank you

  • Yes...and the film ia also known as "Bronze Venus"

  • Just so wonderful. This is a clip from the film The Duke is Tops which also features Lena Horne, worth ferreting out for anyone who loves black-cast films.

  • This group was consistently good during the late '30s and early '40s, much like Slim and Slam. Early '40s King Cole Trio was influenced by stuff like this.
