i just graduated from SOI east as an 0311, as others have said drills like this are used to familiarize new marines on how to move with the saw, we do other, more complex fire & movement drills using the saw & m16 together.
Hard to believe I was ever that slow...but I guess we all were at one time. Gotta love boots. Scared outa their minds but good Marines. Miss those days. Semper Fi Marines
@gti2005 you are wrong about the reason for not carrying it by the barrel release handle witch in the technical manual is called a carrying handle. You can mess up the headspace and timing of the weapon if you carry it by the carrying handle that is the actual answer to that question.
@TheSexybadassboy i laughed so hard when i saw your comment..it is because you seems to be equivalent if not worst than a recruit..you didn't even bother to check description = shots fired before confirming.basic soldiering failed..and worst if you did read the description..you are a bloody disgrace to the british army..
sexybadassboy, if you're actually British, aren't we allies? this was a drill to familiarize themselves with their weapons and to learn how long to rush. if you're so smart you would have payed attention and read that in the description
I was always under the impression that fire and movement was that one section runs whilst the other puts down metal, then vice-versa. Well that's how we trained in the British Army anyway. Never did this RUSH thing.
what the hell is that lol. thats not fire and movement , man u yanks are crap at that drill ..lol one half covers while the other half take a bound or as u call it a rush . and so on and so on . so there is always rounds surppressing the target. and u hit the ground hard not look for an imaginary pillow to lie down on lol .. the aussies are the masters of fire and movement .. have a look at them
@jordansummers83 These Marines are barely out of boot camp. They hardly have a clue about what they're doing. It's like the guy who posted the vid said: the purpose of this drill is to teach them how long to rush. I've trained with the Aussies. From a firsthand view, they're not "masters" any more than we are. Good group of guys, though. Their MREs were a nice change of pace from ours, too...
this is basic Marine Doctrine.. put down supressing fire... rush five or ten yards.. drop.. put down suppressing fire and hope your fellow Marines are behing you!
@burt2800 There isn't a carry handle on the SAW. There is a barrel changing handle. If you grab this, there is the possibility that your barrel could be released, especially on these older, beat up weapons.
@burt2800 I saw the movie as well. I'm not saying you can't carry it like that. I'm saying that it is much better to keep your hand on the pistol grip. For me, it makes it much easier and faster to get into position to fire.
@gti2005 also if you hold it from the handle, it has a chance of messing with the barrel. Plus in a real combat situation, trust me you are going to want your hand on the pistol grip when you get shot at. I agree with you.
@gti2005 we're taught the its not a carry handle its a barrel handle, so you dont burn your hand doing a barrel change, your master hand should never leave the pistol grip
@gti2005 for new guys the pistol grip carry method is hard because its such a heavy weapon, my hats off to you if you can do it for an extended period of time dude
@gti2005 I was wondering, have you heard of any operations to do door to door gun confiscation in America? We sure have, Operation Vigilent Guard! They are going to tell you that people with guns or people that don't agree with this government take over of America are terrorists....The FED is forclosing on America while simultainously driving our dollar to ZERO. The healthcare bill has taken away our freedom as citizens and many are afraid the army will put boots on the ground here at home.
we rush with it like a rifle, but NCOs always try to make things harder than they should be for safety purposes, eventough Ive never heard of any SAWs causing something like an ND
its always the riflemen that do something that stupid
@burt2800 thats why u dont rely on hollywood to get a military prespective on how things are done. that hand is for changing out the barrel, as it tends to get extremely hot after about 200 rnds have went through it, which is when it needs to be changed out after sustained burst
Well technically according to an FN spokesperson, it was designed as a carry handle. Obviously yes you want to teach marines to use it only as a barrel changing handle to prevent exactly what burt2800 said, and from taking your firing hand off the pistol grip. I wouldnt want to teach marines to carry that bitch by the handle during humps or patrols because they get lazy so the barrel changing handle is a good thing and im glad they did it
The SAWs have been improved a lot. Now you can rest the links on the feed try without it slipping cause of the flip tab. Little improvements made it much nicer to handle.
@burt2800 you never, ever , ever carry it by the carrying handle, especially if its loaded, thats an open volt weapon man, they would probably kick u in the back if they saw u do that, its a big no no
@burt2800 when you rush your meant to put that fucker in your shoulder in case the fucking enemy jumps back up and you need to fuck him up, this demonstration or whatever is shit!!!!
@burt2800 sorry mate, wasn't meant to upset you... i was more pissed off at how retarded they are in the video, but i've read the description since... they're only rookies
if you are carrying it by the carry handle it makes it difficult to fire it while moving if you have to. The carry handle is designed to give you something to grab while changing a hot barrel.
I am an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran and an 11B(Infantryman) and on top I was a SAW gunner for 3yrs. I was also a weapons team leader. This is used to learn cover movement...and also to have the weapons "talk" that means some fire while others let weapon cool/reload/move etc... Ft.Benning and Infantry School makes you learn this its part of the job. Kept my guys alive in Iraq i hated giving my SAW up for M4 with M203
Its not an aiming excersise, its a conditioning excersise. Soliders during combat must be agile with their weapon. A solider can not afford to be tired from advancing with weapon especially of the size of the M249. If you notice, they shoot run, shoot, run...The M249 is 35 inches long and about 16lbs heavy. After many hours of enemy contact, this could render a solider exhausted.
Exhausted is an understatement... doing buddy rushes alone will brake you off with an M16. A SAW is obviously even worse, especially if it jams a lot (butta butta jam).
I do not wish to be offending, but what is the point of this drill? The soldiers don't really see the target, I am certain they do not aim at anything when they fire, nobody covers them when they move, do they really learn something? The instructors do not even bother to keep them in a straight line. It seems chaotic. Wouldn't it be better if the recruits were taken to a proper shooting range, and learn how to shoot and aim there?
@bloom52410 Basically, and i myself dont exactly know..but what im guessin is its just to get them used to picking up the weapon, running, then getting down to shoot right away...just to get them used to the gun, obviously their already used to is but just to get them running and stuff, thats my guess honestly
They already know how to shoot, the point of this drill is to enforce muzzle awareness, physical conditioning, and to practice fixing jams. That way when they get out to combat they don't shoot each other, they don't get as broken off, and they can get themselves and their weapon back into the fight.
@bloom52410 I have updated the more info of this video, since this question comes up a lot:
These are very new Marines, and this is only their second time handling the SAW. After a familiarization static shoot with the weapon, we do this training. It is not designed to teach accuracy. The purpose of these drills is to teach them how long to rush (I'm up, he sees me, I'm down), proper procedure for handling the weapon during the rush, and quickly getting back down into position.
@bloom52410 I'm no military man, but from what I know SAW's are used for support and suppressive fire mainly. I'm sure they do accuracy tests too, but right now it looks like they're learning to suppress the enemy, laying down fire to keep the enemy down.
@bloom52410 I agree, when i was in training we moved in squads to prevent ambusing and flanking for instance, charlie team and delta, first charlie would move, then delta so when moving we always had someone covering our movements. also we done this exercise with blank ammunition since there were no viable targets.
You're right. They have more than enough people to suppress and cover fire while moving/ bounding fire teams. Good luck getting a perfect straight line in a fire fight. Especially if someone in the line finds decent cover cause then they have to be pushed to move up.
@ISLAMTHEVIRUSOFLIFE Islam the Virus of life? You're the reason why most people think all americans are stupid rednecks. Sorry if I didn't get the irony.
@unmotomotivater I don't see your point. You say these are Marines. It doesn't write it anywhere on their foreheads... I judge from what I see: some soldiers with american fritz helmets. Do you want my opinion? I have experience and I say that these guys are undisciplined, and seem like second grade troops. Worse still, is that their training officers have lost control of the drill, and seem like they don't care. If these troops are Marines, they do not look like Marines.
@bloom52410 Like gti2005 said, this is just a shooting and moving drill on a new weapon system. Something very new to them and is not going to look perfect. As for for people covering them while they move, this is a range drill not tactics. I am pretty damn sure marines learn basic leap frogging at... well at basic. There is no need to throw in tactics into a range drill right at their stage of training (second time using the saw) anyways. This drill seems to be just getting them use to the SAW
@bloom52410 Also, have you had the chance to teach multiple people in one class before? Everyone is going to be going at their own pace. And seeing as this is their second time doing this, your not going to be anal about everyone going in a line at the same time. You don't want to throw unneeded pressure onto someone while they are both learning a new thing / with a firearm. That can cause more harm than good.
Anywho, that is my 2 cents. I would also like to know your "experience".
@Godawfull About my experience, since you ask: I have done my part of military service (I am not an American), I have lead troops (I was a sergeant), I have trained troops, and I have used the Minimi (SAW). This drill is somewhat allien to my experience. It seems pointless; this is why I asked the question in the first place.
SAW gunners are randomly picked at ITB, granted you can vollunteer to carry the SAW. But SAW gunners suppress, move, and do everything else the riflemen do because, they too are riflemen in a technical sense. the actual Machinegunners usually do "overhead fire" with 240s which is really overhead cuz they are off the the far right of you.
So close to the ground that after two seconds of fire, you lose sight of your target. Ineffective after that except for fear factor or just to keep the target ducking.
they do that later. this is just auto rifleman training. once the ARs are integrated into their squads then they start proving fire while the riflemen rush. and vice versa
how is it decided who gets the m249? i heard its always the new guys cause noone wants to have to carry it around. is this true or is it totally random.
yeah,i would love to shoot it at SOI, but not carry it around. i just prefer an m16. i totally buy that 1 shot,1 kill shit. but knowing the type of rounds we use maybe 3 shots. with an acog headshots can be more probable though.
Id want someone who'd get pissed the fuck off real easily to have the SAW. Cause with those guys..........their anger keeps them humping the SAW.
Main reason Id put my boots on every morning was to see my tracers fly towards the target. You seriously gotta live by it and for the smell of burnt cordite.
yeah man that just motivated the shit outa me. but ill stick with the m16 if possible, carry the SAW if told to. how long does it take to be a fire team leader. i hear its mostly lance corporals rather than corporals that are fireteam leaders.
You can actually hear commands while fireing, the section leaders will always yell at the top of his voice, this also creates an itimidating effect if you are the enemy. Staying close together helps for communication. but too close will create a big target for the enemy... Fire and movement is verry effectife if executed correctly, it should be swift!
You can beliefe me you do hear your section leader beacause there is rarely a qontinious fire, the leader wil usually yell commands when changing clips, and the man next to you will always carry on the command to the man the furthest away. but still you can hear commands when in action, in the case you cant you have to rely on hand signals like we did
You want to make it more complicated than it really is...If I were about 20 m away from the leader giving commands I wont hear a thing. but being closer helps and like I said commands are given while changing magazines or taking cover or on the move.
this isnt basic training, theres no intimidation. it is just very loud. and they're not called section leaders, those are squad leaders giving their squads commands. i love how we're still using ww2 tactics it works very effectively
This isnt basic training for you. But for us ex SADF national servicemen this was part of our 12 weeks basic training. And we use different termanology than you Americans.
the most important thing during fire and movement is communication. If your squad gets lost during fire and movent and dont hear the commands to fire or to cover you are DEAD
So what was the point of that? They run, then shoot, then run, then shoot. I thought maybe they were learning advancing while under cover, but they all advanced at the same time
They're not learning to do it as a group per say, but to do it individually. The military is big on doing training all at once, so thus the reason for everyone doing it all at once.
I got so freaking tired of having to memorize the parts of all the weapons we used. The SAW was a pain in the butt, in particular. Especially rushing and humping with it. Lol, I felt REALLY bad for the guys who were sent to weapons. They had to hump some major crap. :P
Okay this is a basic infantry mans course, new Marine come straight from boot camp and go there. It is two months long. They are usually new to this stuff. So please, stop acting like it is so easy cuz they are shooting real rounds down range, they can kill you. They are doing something most of you haven't or wouldn't do.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i love the m249 it is the only gun I use on PC CallofDuty4 I love the rate of fire and you are guaranteed kills because it does not run out of ammo like the small guns but thanks for posting this..one love
There wasn't enough fire going down range, and whenever they moved there was no fire to pin the enemy down. If that was a real combat situation they would get screwed over whenever they moved.

@bloom52410 Basically, and i myself dont exactly know..but what im guessin is its just to get them used to picking up the weapon, running, then getting down to shoot right away...just to get them used to the gun, obviously their already used to is but just to get them running and stuff, thats my guess honestly
jakewake12 2 years ago
They already know how to shoot, the point of this drill is to enforce muzzle awareness, physical conditioning, and to practice fixing jams. That way when they get out to combat they don't shoot each other, they don't get as broken off, and they can get themselves and their weapon back into the fight.
Bigp426 2 years ago

Berkbelt 1 year ago
@bloom52410 I agree, when i was in training we moved in squads to prevent ambusing and flanking for instance, charlie team and delta, first charlie would move, then delta so when moving we always had someone covering our movements. also we done this exercise with blank ammunition since there were no viable targets.
MrRedeyedJedi 1 year ago
You're right. They have more than enough people to suppress and cover fire while moving/ bounding fire teams. Good luck getting a perfect straight line in a fire fight. Especially if someone in the line finds decent cover cause then they have to be pushed to move up.

@ISLAMTHEVIRUSOFLIFE Yeah, I should of known that but I had a bit of hope.
burt2800 1 year ago
@bloom52410 Congrats... You tried twice but you still couldn't call them what they are. Marines. Not soldiers... not recruits.
unmotomotivater 11 months ago
@unmotomotivater I don't see your point. You say these are Marines. It doesn't write it anywhere on their foreheads... I judge from what I see: some soldiers with american fritz helmets. Do you want my opinion? I have experience and I say that these guys are undisciplined, and seem like second grade troops. Worse still, is that their training officers have lost control of the drill, and seem like they don't care. If these troops are Marines, they do not look like Marines.
bloom52410 10 months ago
@bloom52410 Like gti2005 said, this is just a shooting and moving drill on a new weapon system. Something very new to them and is not going to look perfect. As for for people covering them while they move, this is a range drill not tactics. I am pretty damn sure marines learn basic leap frogging at... well at basic. There is no need to throw in tactics into a range drill right at their stage of training (second time using the saw) anyways. This drill seems to be just getting them use to the SAW
Godawfull 10 months ago
@bloom52410 Also, have you had the chance to teach multiple people in one class before? Everyone is going to be going at their own pace. And seeing as this is their second time doing this, your not going to be anal about everyone going in a line at the same time. You don't want to throw unneeded pressure onto someone while they are both learning a new thing / with a firearm. That can cause more harm than good.
Anywho, that is my 2 cents. I would also like to know your "experience".
Godawfull 10 months ago
@Godawfull About my experience, since you ask: I have done my part of military service (I am not an American), I have lead troops (I was a sergeant), I have trained troops, and I have used the Minimi (SAW). This drill is somewhat allien to my experience. It seems pointless; this is why I asked the question in the first place.

SAW gunners are randomly picked at ITB, granted you can vollunteer to carry the SAW. But SAW gunners suppress, move, and do everything else the riflemen do because, they too are riflemen in a technical sense. the actual Machinegunners usually do "overhead fire" with 240s which is really overhead cuz they are off the the far right of you.
proudtobeadevildog 2 years ago 2
If any of you guys get to whitness this thing firing, it is so fucking loud. Its even worse than the M60 if you can imagine that. :)
WarriorsUnderGod 2 years ago
So close to the ground that after two seconds of fire, you lose sight of your target. Ineffective after that except for fear factor or just to keep the target ducking.
thesixtiesguy 2 years ago
no cover fire when advancing?
Alfian001 2 years ago
they do that later. this is just auto rifleman training. once the ARs are integrated into their squads then they start proving fire while the riflemen rush. and vice versa

how to u become the guy that carries the big guns lik taht instead of the m16 or m4? just wondering
killersmerf4 2 years ago
volunteer for the SAW gunners billet once you get to your unit...or choose MOS0331-Machine Gunner to shoot and carry the M240
USMCM249gunner 2 years ago
that's a piss poor range that the unit set up, SOI was even better then that

to shoot the 240 and everything bigger you have to be MOS0331
USMCM249gunner 2 years ago
how is it decided who gets the m249? i heard its always the new guys cause noone wants to have to carry it around. is this true or is it totally random.
marleynrs8 2 years ago
you can volunteer for it once you get to your unit, they want the best hikers to have them at SOI.
most people dont want it, they like to shoot it but lack the right motivation to carry and maintain it
it's a rush you shouldnt miss out on.
USMCM249gunner 2 years ago
yeah,i would love to shoot it at SOI, but not carry it around. i just prefer an m16. i totally buy that 1 shot,1 kill shit. but knowing the type of rounds we use maybe 3 shots. with an acog headshots can be more probable though.
marleynrs8 2 years ago
well youd be on point in my fireteam.
USMCM249gunner 2 years ago
yeah man that just motivated the shit outa me. but ill stick with the m16 if possible, carry the SAW if told to. how long does it take to be a fire team leader. i hear its mostly lance corporals rather than corporals that are fireteam leaders.
marleynrs8 2 years ago

I wuz thinkin' the same thing. 'At's a 1/2 -assed "shoot 'n' scoot".
BrothuhRabbit 2 years ago
You can actually hear commands while fireing, the section leaders will always yell at the top of his voice, this also creates an itimidating effect if you are the enemy. Staying close together helps for communication. but too close will create a big target for the enemy... Fire and movement is verry effectife if executed correctly, it should be swift!
mirageF1AZ 2 years ago
How in the hell can you hear even the loudest human voice when guns are blazing in a fire fight? Maye when using blanks but live rounds?
UnforgivingDemon 2 years ago
You can beliefe me you do hear your section leader beacause there is rarely a qontinious fire, the leader wil usually yell commands when changing clips, and the man next to you will always carry on the command to the man the furthest away. but still you can hear commands when in action, in the case you cant you have to rely on hand signals like we did
mirageF1AZ 2 years ago
Noise of assault rifles: AK-47 is 163 dB, M16 is 165 dB, and the M4 is 168 dB
UnforgivingDemon 2 years ago
You want to make it more complicated than it really is...If I were about 20 m away from the leader giving commands I wont hear a thing. but being closer helps and like I said commands are given while changing magazines or taking cover or on the move.
mirageF1AZ 2 years ago
this isnt basic training, theres no intimidation. it is just very loud. and they're not called section leaders, those are squad leaders giving their squads commands. i love how we're still using ww2 tactics it works very effectively
lachcik5084 2 years ago
This isnt basic training for you. But for us ex SADF national servicemen this was part of our 12 weeks basic training. And we use different termanology than you Americans.
mirageF1AZ 2 years ago
the most important thing during fire and movement is communication. If your squad gets lost during fire and movent and dont hear the commands to fire or to cover you are DEAD
mirageF1AZ 2 years ago
How do you hear over the gunfire? Just being close to one another?

So what was the point of that? They run, then shoot, then run, then shoot. I thought maybe they were learning advancing while under cover, but they all advanced at the same time
cniinc 2 years ago
They're not learning to do it as a group per say, but to do it individually. The military is big on doing training all at once, so thus the reason for everyone doing it all at once.
td84 2 years ago
I got so freaking tired of having to memorize the parts of all the weapons we used. The SAW was a pain in the butt, in particular. Especially rushing and humping with it. Lol, I felt REALLY bad for the guys who were sent to weapons. They had to hump some major crap. :P

Okay this is a basic infantry mans course, new Marine come straight from boot camp and go there. It is two months long. They are usually new to this stuff. So please, stop acting like it is so easy cuz they are shooting real rounds down range, they can kill you. They are doing something most of you haven't or wouldn't do.

There wasn't enough fire going down range, and whenever they moved there was no fire to pin the enemy down. If that was a real combat situation they would get screwed over whenever they moved.

And then try running around doing combat exercises.
