Good choice of evocative 1960s music to go with this nice 1960s mini-movie. I flew on a KLM Electra from Milan to Amsterdam in June 1968. I was 10 at the time and remember it quite well. Quite a thing nowadays to have flown on an Electra in Europe, as they only served for about 8 years with KLM-1968 was the last year of operation I believe, when they were replaced by DC9s. The Caravelle was the aircraft, I understand, that sealed the fate of the Electra and Vanguard-passengers preferred pure jet
The Electra!! What an elusive aircraft. And Lockheed, what an mysterious company ala civilian passenger planes. The Electra and the Tristar, both great planes, both bittersweet histories. I noticed a Caravelle there in the pic towards the beginning. I guess it was a decent rival to the Electra. Why did the US stick with piston-props so long? They by-passed the turbo-prop era, except of course, for the Electra, which had structural problems at the very time it needed to be solid.
My Dad worked for KLM in Beverly Hills...As a kid I was able to travel all over the globe on KLM, back when taking a plane ride was a big thing! Connies, DC-3's, Electras and so many more kewl planes...Luved the Capital Viscounts...They were mega noisy, but had the big round bubble like windows where you could see the whole world passing by...
