I wish I could play it like that, I just recently started playing. My sister is a Perfectionist at playing clarinet. Your REALLY good thought. Hopefully I can play like that someday :D My sister also Plays Sax, Maybe I'll get a video of her playing on here!
that's very good! I started clarinet a couple of months ago, and the sound bit is so frustrating. Every day it sounds different, but never like a clarinet -.-, sometimes it reminds me more of a sax, sometime of a trumpet....
I'm a high school clarinetist. Even before I began playing the clarinet I've hated it's tone and all around sound. I only play it because I'm forced into it by my parents. This video seriously made me cry, that was so gorgeous. I honestly have an entirely different perspective on my instrument. Thanks <3
hey bro are you a professional?...cause your piece right there fits a sound track i just made!!....and believe me it's absolutely something to hear man!...but i would love to get in contact with you and know if you can do something on my upcoming project!!...PLEEEAASEE!!!!!.....haha!...seriously man!!..that's incredible!!
I have been playing clarinet for about 7 years now and taking classes on improv and I'm very serious about music but I could not recognize what scale you were using...Could you tell me I'd like to expand on my scales....
i played the clarinet for 5 years and loved it (i was actually pretty good), but i had to drop band in high school because of my schedule and i miss it soooo much.
Today I was looking at some of my old music and found that I forgot some of the notes...it was horrible :(
where can i learn to play the clarinet like you? ive been playing for almost 2 years now, all my band can do to teach me is to play songs. is there any books you recommend?
@xkyrakashax - I'm in no way trying to sound like a douche, but thats not growling, its what you said, "flutter tonguing." A true growl doesn't involve the tongue at all... I growl by letting air out on the side of the reed, its sorta sloppy, but it gets the job done without sacrificing articulation or intonation.
@wxb200 sounds good! How exactly are you making that growl? Are you twisting the reed around in your mouth / holding one side of the reed down with your tongue etc?
@hollieb06 - I prefer playing the clarinet over the sax any day. It's lighter and puts less stress on your hands and no stress on your neck. HOWEVER, if I ever get the chance to own a Baritone Sax, Im gonna jump at it! Now, you have to keep in mind that the clarinet is a lot harder to perfect tone compared to the sax. With the clarinet, your jaw muscles will hurt more than they would when playing the sax for a long period. I definitely think the clarinet's tone is much nicer than the sax...
@wxb200 Ah! I play both the Bari Sax, and the clarinet. In fact, I just finished playing them about fifteen minutes ago. I must agree the clarinet is much nicer to play, and much easier to listen to. But the Bari Sax is incredible. It is hard to switch from clarinet to Bari Sax though, because of the size difference in the mouthpiece. But it's all good now. I'm playing Bari in my jazz band, and now am being forced by my band director to switch from clarinet to bari sax in advanced band. Oh well.
@wxb200 I was just learning piano and i had to quit because we couldn't afford to buy a piano...i was devastated....i had been learning for about 3 years now I am struggling to pick an instrument and i have always wanted to play the clarinet or the oboe!
And i Have no idea as to if i can learn it without starting the flute first PLEASE HELP ME! also if anyone knows the prices to a clarinet please speak up!
@sprite4asia a decent clarinet will run you about 800$-1000$
you dont need to learn the flute at all to play the clarinet. ive been playing for 7 years and the flute is actually the only instrument i can't play. just make sure you can keep a tight embeture or however you spell it. clarinet is simple, tone is the hard part. Good luck:)
@PacoLlamacco That's not true. You can get plenty of great clarinets for less. I got my Noblet for $200, and it played better than some pro Leblancs. My Penzel Mueller sounds great. I got a pro Selmer for $300, you just have to look around. R13's are really pitchy, so I tend just to stay away.
@hollieb06 You should get a soprano sax. It sounds amazing in jazz or freestyle. Here, listen to this then tell me what you think. Type in Kenny G - Songbird click then first one.
@hollieb06 It depends whether you know those two instruments or not. If your skilled at both, then yeah the clarinet is totally a way cooler jazz tool (its unexpected). On the other hand, if you are trying to decide which instrument to learn for jazz reasons, the sax is more practical. Also, if you do start the clarinet (assuming you are trying to decide which one to start learning) , remember to learn classical music too. Classical and Jazz go hand in hand.
I am trying out for jazz band at school with my clarinet, but I can't improvise! No matter how hard I try, it never sounds any good! Is there a technique that I can use to play it correctly?
My way of growling involves allowing air to escape from the side of my mouth up against the reed... Some people hum while they play to growl, but you can hear the multi-phonic tone from the humming. I never liked that, so I stumbled onto my style by accident.
This dude played very well. Check it out and leave a comment....Its played by a Turkish Gipsy on a G Clarinet.... The sounds are different but its interresting to listen how the clarinet is played in other cultures....
wow nice. I play the clarinet as well and that sounded pretty good. I have been playing for about 7 years and I'm to the point where I memorize everything I play so improvisation comes pretty natural to me too.
I know what you mean... They like to teach from a lesson plan and hate diverting from it. Go to your local music shop and buy some jazz instructional books included with a CD. If you wanna be creative, learn as much as possible about your instrument!
Oh, actually it is a Profession clarinet made of ebony... My first clarinet was a rental, it was a plastic Beuscher clarinet. I've been playing the clarinet for almost 14 years now...
ive been playing clarinet for 8 years now and just got a youtube account. i have a few songs i know from memory. i should learn some jazz scales so i can do stuff like that lol
I dont really have any sheet music, I just look up scales and theory from the internet... I used to have a jazz reference, but it was in bass clef. I learned to read bass clef from playing the bass clarinet in high school... Just google scales and jazz theory...
Yeah... This is also how you maintain intonation when playing unison and harmonic lines in a group. Basically, I drop my jaw while maintaining some embouchure pressure, it works well on higher notes, lower notes you'll need to partially cover the holes on the clarinet... This can be applied to the high notes as well. I hope this helps, thanks!
Awsome, wow. I was playing classical music for god knows how long (4 years) and my teacher started playing jazz with me finally. :) I have to get used to reading the music a bit differentely, but it's super fun and I really started liking the clarinet more :D
omg i play clarinet! ha im in highschool, 10th grade! but yea it was pretty sweet! i luved the sound^____^man im good at clarinet and im in jazz band but my teacher wont let me play the clarinet so i play tenor sax!but man i've been wanting to play my clarinet tho with a funky jazzy style...but anyways u still did awesome
Thanks! What scoops do you mean? Grace Notes? If thats what you mean, its all in the fingers and the way you attack the note... As far as bending notes, hmm, I play with a soft embouchure when I play jazz, and all I do is loosen up all the way. I dont play with hard reeds either, usually a 2-1/2 or a 3 that I shave down with an exacto knife... Band teachers try to get their students to use harder and harder reeds, their is no reason, if you're not comfortable, why use a hard reed?
Yes, bending notes, I mean. The first one at 0:04 looks like it could have been a scoop into a Ab or A.
My professor now has me playing on about a 2-1/2, whereas my old high school band teacher wanted everybody up to a 3-1/2 or 4 by the time they were seniors.
Oh, thats just a grace note... I just play a note a half-step down from the main note and attack it differently to get the effect... My old high school teacher wanted the wind players to be playing on a 4 through a 7 strength reed and I thought that was crap! Most of the clarinet players had really airy/shitty tones from high strength reeds... Its all about your mouthpiece, some professional mouthpieces require reeds that high, I always played on a jazz mouthpiece that needed a 2-1/2 reed..
he is good at improv, and his tone is decent,( understanding tone is something that comes with talent and practice,), but it is WAY to airy, i reccomend focusing the air in the center of your mouth, and breathing better to take care of that, and embushure strength is another way to get rid of the "pfffffff" sound :) just a suggestion, very well done!!
How could you judge my tone by this video? It was recorded with a cheap digital camera with low quality built-in mic... Thanks for the suggestion, but this video doesnt do justice for my tone...
Most music stores carry them, I have a Rovner Ligature... Its the best in my opinion, there are lots of ridiculous ligature designs out there, some costing up to $200! Get a leather Rovner ligature if you can find one... I had one that was made of leather, but it was stolen!!! So now I have one that's made of some synthetic material...
Well, with improvisation there are no wrong notes, just notes that sound better than others. If you play the major scale (C D E F G A B C), make the 3rd and the 7th flat, you get the dorian scale (C D Eb F G A Bb C) which sounds great when improvising.. The blues scale works in mostly all cases and is really easy to work with. I've been playing the clarinet for 12 years now and I'm turning 24 this year... What I recommend is to practice listening, your ears are the most important tools in music.
I know the clarinet like the back of my hand... The Saxophone however, I cant improvise that well on it, I really would like to have a tenor one of these days.
nice was that pure improvisation or did you have peice to start out with??

Do you have any advice about attempting a pitch bend? Do those scoops at the beginning of the video come from fingers or embouchure control?
Thanks so much for any advice you can give.

Thank you very much!

he is good at improv, and his tone is decent,( understanding tone is something that comes with talent and practice,), but it is WAY to airy, i reccomend focusing the air in the center of your mouth, and breathing better to take care of that, and embushure strength is another way to get rid of the "pfffffff" sound :) just a suggestion, very well done!!

How could you judge my tone by this video? It was recorded with a cheap digital camera with low quality built-in mic... Thanks for the suggestion, but this video doesnt do justice for my tone...

where do you get a black ligature?
animaldude55 2 years ago
Most music stores carry them, I have a Rovner Ligature... Its the best in my opinion, there are lots of ridiculous ligature designs out there, some costing up to $200! Get a leather Rovner ligature if you can find one... I had one that was made of leather, but it was stolen!!! So now I have one that's made of some synthetic material...

Beautiful improvisation. I understand the clarinet is a very difficult instrument to master, and you have done it well.

how do u do that do i have to know the jazz scales??
im obsessed with wanting to be able to play my clarinet like that
ElLoca69 3 years ago
yea u have to know the jazz scale
funkybananas09 3 years ago
Well, with improvisation there are no wrong notes, just notes that sound better than others. If you play the major scale (C D E F G A B C), make the 3rd and the 7th flat, you get the dorian scale (C D Eb F G A Bb C) which sounds great when improvising.. The blues scale works in mostly all cases and is really easy to work with. I've been playing the clarinet for 12 years now and I'm turning 24 this year... What I recommend is to practice listening, your ears are the most important tools in music.

i think you improvise alot better then me on my tenor
gazzy11296 3 years ago
I know the clarinet like the back of my hand... The Saxophone however, I cant improvise that well on it, I really would like to have a tenor one of these days.
