the thing that always annoyed me i that there must have been hundreds of tie fighters on the death star, and then vader is left alone with two dickheads who can't even fly straight to pursue down the trench. there should have been dozens flying around to kill anything else that joined the battle. its a movie, but i hate when the villains are incompetent.

Two things have always bothered me about the Battle of Yavin.

1: Why, when faced with the threat of having Yavin IV annihilated by the Empire, wouldn't the Alliance at least evacuate everyone off planet?

2: When Vader's TIE flight went into the trench to pick off Alliance fighters, why didn't other fighters just slip in behind and ambush the TIEs?
