HOLY SMOKE - AMAZING ! Move over Jimi Hendrix there is a new sheriff in town....the fastest gun in the northeast ! lol... This is amazing solo by Tommy....so young...full of fire ! Drugs had not currupted his mind at this point, although, Im sure he was expierencing them. Way to go Tommy....amazing. rip brother...
I have to say that i cant thank you enough..Im from Sioux City, IA where Tommy was born and all thru my childhood all the way til now I'm 25..I've heard stories from old timers that hung out with & knew Tommy including Johnnie his brother and how amazing he was. I've spent the last 18 years listening to Tommy and looking at pictures, smoking at his gravesite every year and being fortunate enough to jam and hang out with johnnie Bolin but never have I been able to see footage of him, Thank you!
These old tape delays were a blast to play with. Bolin has really done some masterful work with one in the performance. I have a few old Echoplexes and Roland Space Echoes. This is a killer solo. You did not have tap tempo back then, and really had to be one with the guitar, machines, and equipment to pull this type of thing off. Tommy was so brilliant. Todays stuff is pretty lame in comparison. Now the equipment is so much improved, but the artisanship is kinda gone.
This kind of guitar playing reminds me of Alvin Lee back in Woodstock 69, I'll be damned but back then there was'nt to much guitar effects but it does sounds cool.
If this was the Santa Monica show, it was Bolin's last with Zephyr, who were opening for Mountain. I was there and it was an incredible experience. The whole band was on fire, and it was a classic performance by Tommy.
Someone who keeps track of stuff like that told me Zephyr possibly played Santa Monica on two different occasions. There is some discrepancy with dates but it could also be just a mislabeled tape. I really don't know if this is from the final show or not. There is a recording circulating labeled 8-11-70 Santa Monica, while I think the final show was in March of 71. This solo is different than the show labeled 8-11-70, so it might be the last Zephyr show, but I do not know.
@JohnnyVisionquest They played at least twice.I'm the person who uploaded the 8/11/70 recording, and this obviously wasn't it. Zephyr toured with Mountain a bit back in that era, and it wasn't unusual for a tour to hit a market close together in those days.
@JohnnyVisionquest@jonsilence This dude blows me away every time i hear something new by him. Seeing him do it, well hats off to who ever filmed this, and saving it . Shame its so grainee but wow. Thanks for posting.
@70drok Some promoters were not very kind to people with any kind of recording device at a live show back in these days. The bands and record execs were against it for piracy/copyright reasons. A lot of great stuff went unrecorded. The Dead was pro live show recording, and would help some of the more sophisticated guys set up. They were the exception to the rule. This is grainy, but sounds great compared to some of the bootleg stuff I have heard. It is the sound that is most important to me.
@Cupidville The Fillmore certainly is a possiblity. There's footage of Hendrix from the Band of Gypsies show, and it's very similar.Reportedly, there's footage of several bands found that was shot there.
tommy bolin is the man. He is my idol. i Just got into his music about a couple of weeks ago. Listening to him totally gives me a new perspective on music. R.I.P tommy. Your the greatest.
I remember the Zephyr album with the toilet on it. They had a not too beautiful girl lead singer, but Bolin's guitar playing was awesome. O.K. I'll admit now that I stole some of my licks from him.
Tommy Was so good, his playing was so different than everyone else. He had such a great tone and style. Wish he would have stuck around so I could have seen him play.
dude had it

Cool solo, some parts remind me of Mark Farner from the song "In Need" , . . .Grand Funk Red Album. What do you think? But Tommy was still great.

You have to take in to consideration It's the late 60's or early 70's. Trippiness was all the rage and Delay effects were new for guitarist.

This looks like Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Tommy's still playing his Les Paul, right before it was stolen.
