  • Yes, but did you like it?

  • This movie was only released in 4 theatres in the US!!

  • @didilietoo Not any more...

  • This movie just got a bad wrap cause Madonna directed it.. If someone else directed it Im sure the critics would luv it I'll never understand when Madonna did act she get good reviews for supporting roles and bad reviews for th movies she got top billing for. I know sum of them were bad movies but just doesnt make sense to me. I neve thought Madonna was the greatest actress but lets face it there are actors out there that make 20 million a picture and cant act there way out of a paper bag!

  • @didilietoo None of what you wrote made any sense. First madonna is a victim because she can't direct, can't write and won't take acting lessons. Then what you perceive to be the failure of more popular actors is supposed to excuse her or make her bad acting ok? W.E. is one of the worst films I've ever seen-it was murky and lame.

  • @didilietoo I never said Madonna was a victim.. The movie just should of been in wide release.. Lots of horrible movies are in 2,000 theatres across the country and they either to well or bomb..If you didnt like the movie then fine.. However I have not seen it due to its limited release, and when I do see the movie. Hell, I may not like it...The movie just should of been given a chance... The movie is now in 20 theatres across America now! lol

  • One Day I will make a historical film regarded the subject of Edward VIII's life with actors who actually for once look like their characters. James D'Arcy is fabulous actor but he looks fuck all like Edward VIII as does Guy Pearce in The King's Speech. Colin Firth looks fuck all like George VI. What I will do first unlike what Madonna did, is consult with members of the Royal Family who knew Edward VIII properly and I will get every little detail of his life right to the very end.

  • Love the guys in the production booth at 2:00 laughing at Mayo's line.

  • 6:18 What was that noise, Mark?

  • nice one gd.

  • Why does the audio for these Kermode reviews make me feel like I am further away from my computer than I actually am? Its messing with my whole world right now.

  • Consider this: Madonna spent almost USD$40 million (or $20 million British pounds) to make essentially a love letter to a bunch of royals and fashion victims with Nazi sympathies. Just when you thought her career couldn't get anymore offensive and pornographic, here it is.

  • @Suzz78 Nothing, I just thought his pronunciation of it sounded very English, was all :p.

  • Madonna's prick fans keep flagging comments and we will keep reposting them.

  • Yikes.

  • An Oscar Nomination for Best Costume has all the kudos of buying a raffle ticket in a church fete.

  • Stop holding back, Mark. Tell us all how you REALLY feel.

  • "I care about these people less than I do about the people in Sex and the City 2"

That pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

  • it might be a good idea for madonna to go to film school tbh

  • Madonna's low life troops are out flagging comments. Here is an idea: why don't you all have a collection to buy off her sagging rawhide ass off so she'll never go NEAR a film set again? She could get more bile to inject into her puffy adder face.

  • Maddonna can't direct. If this movie doesn't state the obvious, she's just gonna keep at it. She's just trying to be the same, if not better than her ex husband is at the directing. And He is in my opinion, not the best director around.

  • Not Dom DeLuise in The Producers...

    Zero Mostel?

  • How to put off potential viewers on a movie poster?

Above the title 'W.E.' 'A Film By Madonna'.

What next? The Charles Manson Summer Camp?

  • @SSCFPA What would you trust the most Marks review or Fred Wests wedding vows

  • @MrBronzefonz Mark. Even more than Cooking With Dennis Neilsen.

  • "No, no, no, no and NO'. Perfect!

  • For a film critic he did totally fail to see the point of the movie. "In 1998, lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with what she PERCEIVES as the ultimate love story". Watching the film you can't fail to notice that Wally Winthrop is obsessed with a fantasy to the point that she imagines talking to Wallis Simpson. The film is miss marketed and with a few flaws but it is by no means a bad movie

  • @TheForeverM The film is awful. TOTAL RUBBISH.

  • why doesn't madonna stick to singing and generally being obnoxious?

  • @frogtastic1000 because her ego is too big my friend.

  • "Historically preposterous," the way he says that just sounds so English to me. Am I just be an ignorant Yank :p?

  • @hanshotfirst1138 i wouldn't dare presume to comment on that. But what is wrong with historically preposterous?

  • All the dislikes are by irate wrestling fans who didn't notice the missing E.

  • This guy is right, sorry

  • @GlossyShoes this guy is right, pt2.

  • To those charging that Mark Kermode has an obvious dislike for Madonna and that's what is fuelling this review, he has gone on record a few times saying that she was brilliant in 'Evita' and that she was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

  • Comment removed

  • For heaven's sake, please mix the audio before you post your videos. I can hardly hear anything even after raising the volume on my computer as high as I can!

  • Madonna : was in Evita and W.E, can't help but think she has a tendancy to romancise people with discutable political views if they are able to show themselves as glamourous enough

  • I can't hear shit

  • Having seen the film I can say that yes he does have some valid points the script is bad and Abbie Cornish is a horrendous actress. But Madonna has said time and time again she did not set out to make a biopic. Her main theme of a story is how the duchess of windors life became an obsession and inspiration for a a women living in the present to search for a better life. This guy clearly has something against Madonna. Masterpiece having might I say deserved the globe win is more catchier than El

  • @Vela21 Sorry, he's critiquing the film very fairly. I guess if you have King George The Third's death being announced in 1936(sic) and Nazi affiliations written of as an empirical lies" then you really are thick. Be it personal interpretation or straight bio pic-open a book and at least get basic history straight. Ken Russell's wonderfully crazy musical Lisztomania stuck to more facts than this AND it had a 15 foot penis!

  • @BrickLaneBetty I bet your penis is bigger.

  • @BrickLaneBetty really? tell me more

  • @MrPlayBeyond You ugly icon flopped. Blame her not those who think this picture is a pile of shit.

  • @TheArsenalgooner Golden Globe and Oscar Nominated. Yeah a real flop, deal with it.

  • @MrPlayBeyond A COSTUME NOMINATION DOES NOT MEAN SHIT! Film did not even crack the UK top ten. show me the money and audience-NO ONE WANTS TO SEE HER FLOP!

  • If anyone thinks the Oscar nomination for costume design is some sort of vindication of the film's quality - remember that Norbit was nominated for best makeup. Doesn't mean it's not terrible.

  • @bingdiddley To be fair, W.E. has made me reconsider Norbit. It now appears to be a masterpiece in comparison

  • @TheArsenalgooner At least you gave it a chance and try to watch it, which is more than many will do. Still, what can I say... I really think the film has many merits.

  • Best rant so far... It´s epic in every way.. Almost fell down laughing on the bus, people thought i was having a seizure XD

  • Comment removed

  • CHUNDER!!!!

  • Madonna this, Madonna that... Folks, this is not a real review, just a rant by someone who obviously dislikes Madonna. The film is actually quite good.

  • @enuthal1 Actually its a film that has been universally panned.

  • @rickstein123 The stats speak for themselves, but I disagree with the "consensus." Critics slam the historical inaccuracies, the parallel stories, and also, unfortunately, make superfluous comments about Madonna, the pop star. This film is about a depressed woman reconstructing in her mind the story of W.S. It isn't a typical biopic film. I think if people didn't know it was Madonna's film, and the subject were less controversial, more would give this film a chance and enjoy it.

  • @enuthal1 I can't comment to much on it because I haven't seen the film and I don't plan to. I have heard the song that won a Golden Globe and it was pretty awful and I'm too young to really know much about Madonna and I don't really care about her or have anything against her. From the way it sounds the film seems to portray that they weren't Nazi sympathizers which is factually wrong and quite a big inaccuracy.

  • Comment removed

  • If it were NOT Madonna's film it would be ignored but for a costume nod at the Oscars. The academy rewards any film with good costumes w/a nod. FAR better films are ignored because they don't have the Weinstein PR machine for endless, endless "premiers" like this. She should not make narcissistic hagiographies of rich Nazi sympathizers if she wants an audience beyond her fans. Her film would have been popular in Nazi Germany or the Vichy era but not today.

  • @enuthal1 When did Mark criticise Madonna personally?

He was talking about her work relating to film.

    Mark is film critic.

  • @MadameMao1 don't know if "personal" is the word. He does refer many times to Madonna's music. He mentions that everything in the script seems to be coming out of a "Madonna video". Does he explain why? Does he give any examples of how the writing is bad or inadequate? No, he just relates the writing to music videos. And he makes fun of Madonna's "Masterpiece" as if it were important to the film (even if a good song). He is just mocking Madonna, not providing us with a real critique.

  • @enuthal1 No he does not. Madonna is judged on her past work, even acting and singing, all directors who did other things before directing are. He gives dozens of examples of why the plot aka the writing is cack! When a script is bad-NOTHING can save a film. Leaving out their Nazi affiliations is like making a film on HUAC and leaving out McCarthy and Hoover! is supposed to be all "brave and challenging" and she just made a fashion spread/vanity project and that's why it has flopped.

  • @TheArsenalgooner Some of the lines are camp, but I like the story. So what did this reviewer say of the script besides the music-video comparison? He mentions all these things he doesn't like, but most of the negatives could be interpreted as positives if one looked beyond the surface and saw the oneiric qualities of the film. Nazi thing:Did Ed. do anything of true political consequence after the abdication? He just lived in that rarified environment that Madonna somehow portrays.

  • @enuthal1 Zero camp. Madonna has never been campy, funny or goofy in anything she does.

  • @enuthal1 In the same way that diptheria is actually quite good?

  • @tstinckyvaginaSuzz78 No. In the same way that citizen kane is good. Just kidding. I did quite like it, though.

  • W.E. just got a OSCAR nomination and im giong to see the movie

  • @Princeaj200 For costumes BFD

  • @Princeaj200 For costume design... *high five*!!

  • @tuckeryoudog which means nothing for madonna!! It will go to Arianne Phillips who has ripped off so many others including half a dozen of Shirley Russell's designs from Tommy. Weinstein will buy it for her but honestly she does not deserve to win. Arianne Phillips is an ugly rip off idea stealing whore like her boss.

  • @Princeaj200 Norbit was also nominated for an Oscar. A nomination doesn't necessarily mean that the film is any good.

  • "People have accused Wallis of all kinds of things. They've said that she put a spell on Edward. They've said that she was a hermaphrodite and that he was gay. They've said they were Nazi sympathisers. It's just the usual lynch-mob mentality that descends upon somebody who has something that lots of other people don't have."

—Madonna talking about the accusations on Wallis Simpson

"something that lots of other people don't have." ?? Just pitiful.

  • @trujillorodrigo Have you seen it? The security guard lives in a flat that looks it is too posh for Architectural digest-it is as big as airline hangar and decorated like the bloody Hermitage. The film just looks it was created solely for boring Gwen Paltrow GOOP people. Lydon gave permission because he loathes her and knew it would be scathingly awful. No one wants to see a POORLY written hagiography of Nazi sympathizers and wealthy people in the era!!

  • He doesn't get the use of the Sex Pistols.

  • @ilovetati91 Neither does Madonna, it seems

  • It was not that bad...ridiculous.

  • HAHA :D :D lol W.E. 2 nominations Golden Globe (1WIN), 1 nomination OSCAR (?) :D :D eat this HATERS !!! :D

  • @MrTomasDUDA Drive - only one Oscar nomination. Still eats most other films this year for breakfast. I suspect W.E. may do rather better at the Razzies

  • @Suzz78 " Oh, and guess what, Madonna's W.E. is a thousand times better than royal borefest The King's Snooze, in which a man spends two hours overcoming a speech impediment while Helena Bonham Carter looks on. W.E. actually has proper roles for women in it – and, sorry haters, Madonna can direct." official expression of critic

  • @MrTomasDUDA THE FILM IS GARBAGE!! Did not even make the UK Top ten all the US critics HATE it. FLOPDONNA!

  • @MrTomasDUDA hahaha!! Madonna cannot direct, write or block a basic scene! hahaha E./W> HAS FLOPPED!

  • @MrTomasDUDA Bidisha isn't a critic, she's just a rent-a-mouth who the Observer dragged into that panel for reasons unknown. Amusing how she thinks Nazi sympathisers are more sympathetic than people trying to overcome disabilities, though.

  • Was Dom DeLuise in The Producers? Or was he thinking of Zero Mostel?

Poor Zero. Already got screwed over enough by HUAC and friends without being forgotten by a really good film critic.

  • @sabalos dom deluise was in quite a few of mel brooks' films, but not the producers. i concur with your sentimentality in thinking of zero mostel.

  • @sabalos Zero was a master. Love him as the Albatross in Watership Down and in a very rarer film with Harry Belafonte called The Angel Levine.

  • @sabalos Was it not the remake? Possibly?

  • i wonder why he's pissed.... he must have a problem with the director not the movie.

  • @mediasansnom Or maybe he actually loves cinema as a medium, and hates to see it shat upon from a great height by vanity projects. The funding for this could have made twenty interesting indie projects

  • @Suzz78 i think if one takes two years of his life to write a movie, he has the right to release it. don't you?

  • @mediasansnom NO. Madonna should never be allowed near a camera again. In fact maybe one of her puffy adder cheekbone implants will explode and she'll vanish like a witch into the forest never to return..

  • interesting that this review made me realize how much i utterly detest period films that employ modern music in the soundtrack. remember that heath ledger movie where he's a knight in the middle ages?

wouldn't it be funny if a film made by madonna ended up being really deep and interesting, like "apocalypse now" or soemthign?

  • @clockworkscott Ahh, I loved Knight's Tale, it's one of my guilty pleasures.

  • I don't like to judge films on their trailers, but upon seeing a preview of this film in the cinema I knew it would be utter tripe. Seeing the words, "A film by Madonna" only confirmed it. Thank you Doctor for providing far more entertainment in trashing it than Madonna clearly did in creating it.

  • I suppose Madonna rather watched some crap like "Moulin Rouge" rather than Copolla's movie.... anyways - nice rant!

  • She is so out of touch, anyone that knows anything about these two knows they were nazi sympathizers....egads.

  • I think it is clear that John Lydon (who allowed the song to be used) knew it was going to be so horrendously awful that he could not resist. And he was right!

  • If Ken Russell had been given 16 million quid to make this film, you'd have been given the truth not some white wash of raving anti-Semites.

  • Best Rant of the Year Nominee for January

  • madonna should remake citizen kane

  • What happened to Mark's hair, part-way thru that review? It must've been all that waving of hands...

  • Maddonna collects another raspberry award .

  • Mohamed Al-Fayed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Madonna + film = crap

  • Just the phrase 'A Film By Madonna' should have any normal viewer scurrying for the hills. Too bad I'm a movie masochist. :P

  • So that's the worst film of 2012 sorted out

  • @frogtastic1000 The Human Centipede 3

  • Bloody hell this sounds like an utter pile of smelly stuff , i hate it when they make historical films and revise history to suit their crappy ideas ,nothing worst .

  • @woofalot13 no you can make that much worse. have madonna make it

  • @CaptainWeetch1 yup and it has bloody happened ,cronic hubris should be called maddona syndrome .

  • The reference at 1.00 really pleased the guys in the background. I wonder if he/they won a bet.
