pianojohn, your playing is impeccable, but I must ask, in view of your comment that Penny Lane "really isn't a piano song," what instrument do you think this song was originally composed on? I personally can't "hear it" composed on a guitar, so it must have been a piano. Thoughts?
@KUTVgroucho That's a great question, and I'm not really sure what it might have been done on originally. I suppose the piano may have been used to lay out the chords, but I've never seen another piano arrangement of the song, so I can't be sure. Alan Pollack noted that George Martin helped by adding flutes, brass, a piccolo, a bass fiddle, a fire bell, voices that mimic sirens, oboes, and overdubbed keyboard parts, but what the original sound was remains a mystery, at least to me!
@pianojohn113 i'm very confused by this because there is clearly piano on the song... You can hear it throughout the entire song. It's just a little drowned out at points cos of all the other instruments. so seeing as there is piano in this song, it shouldn't be a mystery. i'm guessing it was written on the piano. plus Paul wrote most of his songs on the piano. even the oldies that weren't record or performed on a piano.
@queerp You could be right. I don't really hear the piano part specifically, but I would imagine there is some somewhere, and it's entirely possible that Paul wrote it on the piano as well. I'll have to look up the history of the song and verify, I guess.
Could you pleas tel me how to play it whit only right hand and no accords pleas?:# I havce to play it before friday but i realeyy dont understand it::$
@pianojohn113 hahaha...I think kerriesoepp means justplay the melody on the right hand, without chords. Like, left hand playing left hand part, with right hand playing just the melody...
Hey John love these vids...since I'm relitivly inexperienced at piano (I'm self taught) most piano music is a challenge for me, but your tutorials do help tremendously and I've become a much better pianist because of them...btw how did you learn all these songs anyway? Was it by ear Or someother way?
piano john, I feel you are one of the greatest teachers I've encountered in my life time... but alas, it is sad for you're only on the internet. I love you man, keep up the good work!
you bring the joy of piano playing to so many people around the world and I thank you for that. I am currently up to date with all your lessons and was wondering if you take requests. I think you would do a great job on Elton Johns Honky Cat and Take me to the pilot. thanks again.
I learned piano from you. Because of your tutorials I can play songs in our band and have spent many enjoyable hours at home playing songs. You have no idea how much you've done for me. Thank you does not say enough.
I love the tutorials by the way-so far ive learned rocket man, fool on the hill, imagine, strawberry fields and let it be-in a matter of days! I especially like your interpretations of non-piano songs.
I really don't know what i should have done without you! You ARE really the BEST! So far i've learned: Let it be Hey Jude While my guitar gently weeps Imagine Golden Slumbers Real Love and The Fool on The Hill in a month...:) I am learning, penny lane, a day in life, i am the walrus, and hello goodbye! Thank you SO much!!
This looks way more complicated than I could ever manage.... But it's Penny Lane, so I have to give it a shot. Thanks for doing this, you're the best teacher I've ever had!

He also uses keys such as Ab major and Eb major. One key has four flats, and the other has three. I actually don't remember him saying in one of his videos, that those two particular keys are not his favourite, because they are also very complex.
Good news: McCartney finally got his Hollywood star.

Why isn't B Major your favourite key?
pianoomar100 2 years ago
Well, B Major has all of the black keys in it, it's very complex and that's probably why. I don't like it either.
