does it really need Nero disk burner? Is it really necessary? Could you down load burner a or use windows 7 burner when back up ing?

@mikemcgee Nah, it doesn't "need" nero to complete a task like burning. It is nice to have though and probably has a few perks over those programs such as what windows offers.

Do you know if I can boot the system from this external device? I want to use it to format and reinstall Windows 7 on netbooks.

@Seathal Short answer, yes it should. But i've also read that some notebooks have issues with regocnizing the usb device (because of drivers). So it's really hard to give a 100% answer. It may be hit and miss. I would test for you, but this product was not mine to keep.

@BoxeoP4P Awesome. Many thanks. My netbook is a Samsung, same year than this, even same design, so I'm sure it'll work with that. But a friend of mine has a Toshiba I am trying to repair, and that could really be a hit and miss chance.

@mestido I don't see why not. It may take a bit longer than your average cd/dvd combo drive though.

@aks320 If you have a need for your CD/DVD drive, I don't see why not. Keep in mind that this does not install internally but externally, connected via usb cable. They now have a blue ray version if you use that.

I must say it for the second or maybe third time i really love my Samsung SE-S084F external USB CD/DVD burner and i think it's the best accessoiry for my Asus 1215N netbook. I love to watch movies on my netbook with PowerDVD. I highly recommend this drive and also PowerDVD. J'm truly a Geek hehehe !!! :P

This Samsung external USB DVD burner gets a thumbs up from me. I have the exact same SE-S084F VER:TS00 and i flashed it with the latest firmware. Its an awesome slim usb dvd burner i just freaking love it. BTW i use this drive on an Asus 1215N netbook.

@syahmizul61 make sure everything is plugged in correctly, then either try that specific cd in another device or get a new disc and try it in the samsung slim. If it points to the samsung slim could be a good time to RMA or give out emails/phone calls to samsung or where you purchased it.

@Barbrad123 Hello, i've never tried sorry. I'm sure you can, but it is not meant to be and it will probably void the warranty along with other risks that can occur while dismantling the dvd writer.

strange question, but for a netbook with no dvd drive, can this be used as a normal dvd drive?

@KG739 Hi, it definetly can. A major purpose of this dvd driver was to be used with laptops and to be portable so you can easily bring it with you and your laptop. However, this is external and will not fit "inside" the laptop. You also require 2 free usb ports (preferrably usb 2.0).
