Yup. It's not finished yet in train mode, but I couldn't resist making a video. I was planning to make the train tracks white as the cartoon Astrotrain.
Thanks for the tip. Initially I did intend to give it chrome or silver details (the silencer would become chromed) but I ended up spraying it fully light purple. I decided to make it light purple without other colors to keep it cartoon/artwork-accurate. Another reason is the size of the gun. If a gun as big as that would get more details, it would make Astrotrain look much smaller :)
I've got the E-hobby version in my hands but damn man your custom is sweet, great job with the colors and taping off areas to paint can be a real pain, (darn windows) but you did a professional looking paint job.
Taping off the areas was 90% of all effort. It took hours to tape the cockpit and back pieces. The windows were indeed the most time-consuming things to get painted. The golden wheels were the easiest. Just spray :)
Cheers. I'm planning to add some necessary additional details later on. The rods on the large train wheels are supposed to be white. His head light on top of the locomotive should also be painted. His lower arms should have triangles and he needs red textures below his chest. My printer pulled a joke on my by giving a correct preview of the stickers that I drew in a program and printed it full size A4 *_*
I didn't dare it either. That's why I bought another Astrotrain for this purpose :) This one arrived in horrible condition. It had a lot of dirt and worn-out stickers. I had to do a major clean-up before I could start spray-painting it.
Awesome! I just love your vids man! The fact that you don't talk through it, use various songs, and allow the toy to tell its own story with its very presence is a unique way to go about it! Very refreshing!
Good job! Please keep making these! I'm looking forward to seeing what's coming next!
Thanx. I'm still considering to add some more details to him such as the 2 red striped textures below his chest, the arrows on his lower arms, the yellow rectangles with red redtangle in it on the sides of the space shuttle and white locomotive wheel rods.
Thanks :) The purple I used is the same purple as the cartoon Astrotrain which is lighter than the dark purple of the original Astrotrain paint. His rifle is also repainted, but I forgot to put the other rifle next to it to see the color difference.
Great... True Astrotrain in this version

I think in train mode, some nice black and silver wheels would've broken up the purple. more detail with it that way.

Thanx! I breathed a lot of paint mist while making this. My lifespan was shortened with 10 minutes just by making this repaint.

That looks absolutely fantastic mate!!
I especially like the paint work on the head, the red visor looks so wicked!!
The only thing I think you should do next is spice up the huge gun with some of the silver paint, just to emphasise some of the details.
Over-all though, it really looks great!!

Wow, very nice. I'm starting to like the Testor's Spray outcome.
Latinlabel 3 years ago
I used Testors's chrome spray for the thrusters. All other colors were from Tamiya Color spray paints.

Thanks. It's Tamiya gunship metal. I'm very pleased with this spray paint. Two layers are good enough and it doesn't clog.

Especially the head now looks fantastic. Now he looks like a big bad motherfucker. As it should be, since he is a Decepticon.^^
5 stars!!!

The head was the last part that I worked on. I sprayed it purple and hand-painted the face and stripe on top of his helmet.

I would say this certainly puts the e-hobby pink/purple and grey reissue to shame!
Do you have any more G1 customs in progress?

I'm working on a G1 Reflector repaint.
seekerjet 3 years ago
Reflector eh?! Sounds good!
The purple is a great match for the cartoon version and don't worry about the rifle. I'm sure anyone that has Astrotrain could tell lol.
Keep up the great work mate!!
