I saw Lonnie 3 or 4 times at a little club in Hamilton,OH where he frequently played .This was late 70's. I bet there wasn't 200 people there and they played like there were 20,000!It was the greatest band I ever heard! The legendary Dumpy Rice on keys. This band mesmerized the whole club, man they were fantastic!
@guildguy56 Queen of clubs, He was playing there ,but the night he was put in jail in cincinnati for hitting a cop as the story . What happened to Gary boston Jerry love and Jellyroll ? Dumpy died a few years back .
Lonnie home outside of knoxville Tenn. Use come over to house w/Jerry and Gary.Very close friends of the family!
Lonnie is the man. He sat in with my band one night with HIS equipment (58 Flying V, serial # 007, a cable & Roland Jazz Chorus). He had set in frequently before but had used my LP & Marshall. The live sound he gets is absolutely phenomenal. Super sustain and controlled feedback .And his acoustic playing, fantastic.I have heard all his recorded music and it doesn't even come close to the sound this man actually delivers on stage! He is a true guitar icon.
My dad bought me my first guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Jr., a Mel-Bay chord book and a Lonnie Mack LP. I wore the grooves off the record, and it set the tone of what kind of music I both enjoyed to play and listen to.
Lonnie I came to Milan in the 60s one of the first songs I learned to play was Memphis Tommy Slayback taught me that low string lick with the little finger that you used it was genius I still use it i opened your show in the early 80s with the Rageing River Band I sure enjoyed it Sunnyside Dallas Country club Winter Garden up and down the Ohio river you belong in the RR HOF your brother Billy was great also JayBowling1
As great as Lonnie is live playing and singing, if you haven't heard his old instrumentals, you haven't gotten the full Lonnie Mack story. Agreed with others on this board that it is a farce that the R&R HOF doesn't have Lonnie or Link Wray in it, but Sting makes it? Please give me a break....
I remember seeing this on TV in the UK about 20 years ago and it completely blew me away - I had not come across Lonnie before - superb stuff - this and Oreo Cookie Blues are two of my all time favourite songs.
Lonnie Mack is one of the most Underated guitarists of all time. A man SRV, Dickey Betts, and now Joey Bonnamasso have looked to for inspiration. I dont know how he keeps the guitar in tune hitting that old bigsby like that. I had an old SG set with the same trem ...it never kept tune after i hit the trem. He is still playin the blues...Rock on Lonnie!

@jjhtr I've had the pleasure to hold and play the V with the mojo on it!! Backstage at a show in Louisville. Rode to the show with Lonnie in his old van, too. Must have been back in 2000 or 2001? What a VOICE and an 'ole boy.
He is the man....to get his sound u have to use heavy gauge strings 50 + on the low E-string and then tune a whole step down. Dude has strong fingers...lol...and soul
@ocean911 Strong fingers? Wimp :-) I play bass and any guitar setup is easy to finger compared to that. Soul he has plenty of. Joe Bonamassa has a great version of this song here on YouTube too.
@tbcass Have you actually listened to the songs? They have the title but the lyrics and music are completely different. They are not the same song at all.
@tbcass Yea I know the songs are different but they are both minor blues played in a similar tempo with the same feel. I thought it would be good to direct people another great song sung and played by another great guitarist. Next time I'll ask your permission.
@bcushing The R&R Hof F is a bunch of cronies electing each other into it. No Link Wray, or Rush? No Dick Dale? WTF? Its some exclusive bullshit society where a hack can be in it 3 times. No Lonnie Mack, Link Wray, but Sing is in it, and Dr. John? You have to pay out the ass to go through it and can't take photos. Too high brow for my tastes. I am pulling the members off my play lists, including Zeppelin, sorry fair is fair. Taste accounts for zero anymore, and accounted for damn little since 77
On top of the fact that I've had the priveledge of opening for Lonnie on 2 occasions, I saw him sit in with the Allman Brothers Band on their reunion tour at Riverfront Coliseum in 1989. They brought him up to do "Southbound" and his own "Cincinnati jail" and he handed Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts their assholes on a platter, which is saying a lot since I consider both of them {Warren and Dickey} to be two of the best players on the planet!
Best of the "southern rockers" except he's from Aurora Indiana {just west of Cincinnati} He used to get played on "black" radio stations in the 50's, because he was so soulful, everyone assumed he was black.
This man should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! He was playing screaming lead guitar in the late 50's and early 60's BEFORE there was a Clapton, Beck or Hendrix!
