The central Midwest has produced some awesome bands that sadly have been crapped on by the East coast and West coast music bigwigs. Bands like Shooting Star, Missouri, Head East, The Rainmakers. Ozark Mountain Daredevils. Luckily "the man" wasn't able to keep down Kansas, REO Speedwagon or Styx!
@JimHadar1 you got that exactly right Jim, lived here in Missouri all my life, grew up listening to all those bands, and you couldn't have said it any better. I went to Missouri Institute of Technology (the OTHER MIT !) for about a year from '81 to '82 and the lead singer from the band Missouri was in my classes!
Soooo many great songs. I saw you guys in the round at the Westport Playhouse, St. Louis, Mo in the early 80s. First row. Awesome and perfect live. Last Chance is inspiring and Hollywood still brings tears to my eyes.. and goosebumps!
Saw them at the Missouri Theater in Saint Joseph,Mo. back in 1981 I think? awsome band! I think my favorite song was "Last Chance" that song just said it all!
My brother met Gary while we were living in Lee's Summit Mo back in 1974 and ya just knew he was the shit then!
hows that ? was he doin some original stuff & you guys thought it was pretty good? just wonderin! or was the energy around him just undenieable, seriously !!
Back again watching you guys...Seems like yesterday. I really miss O.Park, K.C. and those days. I was so looking forward to talking to Bill after all these years. Bill had that sweet white Corvette Stingray. What a great sense of humor, and just an all around great guy and talented musician. .....RIP my friend. I know if they have a band there, you're playin like never before. Shooting Star......good as any of the top bands then AND NOW. ROCK ON!
thanks for posting this...it really brings back memories, and really dates me too! Regardless, I love all of these early videos and rock pop obscures. This one reminds me a little of Michael Stanley Band's pop hit around the same time or a couple of years later...on the tip of my tongue.
Shooting Star went on to have some minor hits later in the 1980s but never really hit that "strata" of success that other comparable bands like Journey and Styx did.
I saw SS play in a small nightclub in San Francisco- I think it was Bill Graham's club- called Wolfgang's. This was in November, 1981,around the time that the song, "Last Chance" had hit the charts (about a year and a half after the LP it appear on was released) and the event had been sold out for weeks. The band's music was receiving a ton of airplay on the radio out here for that song, as well as several songs off of their second LP, the mid-1981 release, "Hang On For Your Life."
Saw them in July 83 at Wolfgangs. Reason I know is that I have pictures from that show. AWESOME! Wolgangs and the Old Waldorf were great clubs and KSAN used to do live radio broadcasts as well. Love my old live SS tapes now on CD!
My little public service for a band I've loved since they first came out: They've now got their own website - "shootingstarmaniacs(you figure out the rest of the url)" - at which you can buy their old and new albums on CD, a live DVD, and even t-shirts.
The song is straight ahead rock but IMO can be considered power pop. A fine example of the genre.

Van McLain is such an underrated guitarist. That first Shooting Star album is still one of my favorites. Absolutely brilliant.

it's too bad too because, "last chance" is one of the greatest songs of all time. Their talent was comparable to Kansas, and to Rush to some extent
