The only people who bitch about the VG are the 1st timers...... Iv did my first vg30dett from my z32 while it was still in the car... I hated it..... Iv since pulled it out and its such a easy motor when you can see everything.. I love the vg...
I would like to a tb48de turbo swap. The tb48de is an inline 6 motor from the Nissan patrol. Nice swap by the way! Sounds good. I know that the rb26 is pretty easy to work on, but the vg30 I believe has just as much potential and should be given more attention.
for the money... id do the ol 5.7 swap... they are cheap and will make the same power for less.. and yes i get the point of the normal swap.. i swapped and built my na to a vg30dett and 20 grand later it was one nickle and dime job after the next.. the ls1 is a MUCH more dependable engine when modified and it takes alot less maintenance..
@sidewayznut2009 Ive always thought the same thing. The VG is a wonderful engine and can put plenty of power out. I guess its more on the unique factor because its from the legendary GTRs. Or maybe its the Inline 6 vs. V6 fight. Never the less this is wonderful car, and both the RB engines and The VGs are great
@smallpaul123 less powerful engine? many standard RB26's have dynoed at 320BHP, which is more than a stock TT 300ZX.
I don't know why people are getting confused? Here in the UK It's a no-brainer as to swapping in an RB26 or RB25, revvier, easier to work on and more reliable, not to mention many people have ran up to 600BHP on standard internals with good reliability, I know of no VG engines that can achieve that....
Reliability is not down to either engine designs, both have inherent flaws and good points. You could in theory bung a T88 turbo onto any old 4-banger, and if you dont drive it too harshly and have it mapped right it might last for years. You could have a fully built motor, not run excessive boost, have it tuned and have it blow up on the dyno. Alot of it's to do with the engines life and servicing - and luck of the draw. The VG is all about mid-range grunt the RB about top end power.
Over here in the states we have dudes with 800whp 300zx . twin 3076r . but i do agree with the more broad powerband of the rb engines . i am soon to own a 240sx with rb26 mated to a rb25 tranny . and a top mount 35r . bang bang skeet skeet
im the same i dont understand why u would put in a smaler less powerfull engine but i do admit i have owned both 300zx tt(current car) and a skyline the skylines straight six does sound the best in my opinion
But how many people can say they have a RB26 Z32? And from what I'm learning from my 300ZX, RB's are supposed to be a lot easier to maintain than the VG30.
Yep, properly maintaining the Z with a limited time schedule can frustrate and make you want to give up at times if doing your own garage work. This leads to a lot of Zs not being properly cared for, because usually the owners pay for shop labor. The labor costs often exceed the cost of the parts which are being replaced! Hearing shop estimates on certain maintenance labor can discourage a lot of people from replacing those parts that really *should* be replaced often.
After working under the TTZ's hood time and time again, I have to disagree. It is a pain to do even some minor tasks in the Zs engine bay, due to how cramped the bay is. Having a swapped RB engine in the Z would relieve you of a lot of hassle and labor hours if you are tuning under there a lot. I agree that the project cost is substantial, but if done right, I think the layout benefits gained will pay for themselves in time. (Changing the stock engine-TTZ's injectors can take hours.)
@drift18Japan Except Rb26 is heavier than a VG30 and the VG30 holds the land speed record so the RB and 2J can suck it cuase they were 20mph slower than the almighty VG on the land speed.
What's awesome is that Nissan developed both the RB26 AND the VG30 at the same freakin time.
Still...I'll take a VG30DETT in a Z32 anyday. They're lighter and the RB26 would raise the center of gravity a bit.

@zboost300, how hard was the swap. Would you say it was worth it? Approx how much did it cost?
It is my dream to do this swap, I would love to know the details. To know if I can.

its so worth putting a rb to the z toss away that heavy ass vg30
drift18Japan 4 months ago
the rb makes a few more hp with the exact same set up but the vg makes about 40% more torque

I don't know why the VG doesn't get more attention its proven for the same kinda power as the RB
Don't get me wrong this is a bad ass car I'm sure and its definatly better than my heap of a s13 but I think the VG is an equal motor

definitely it worth a penny to swab from VG30DETT to RB26DETT...... done with mine.... next project ---> to upgrade the RB

Do more research, plenty of people have 600 *wheel* horsepower with stock internals in their 300zx's. If you do it right, reliable too.

I don't really understand this swap personally. The vg30dett is just as amazing of a motor as the rb26dett. However, to each their own...
quincybrad 2 years ago
@quincybrad rb26dett is way more reliable then the vg30.

It is slightly more reliable, but if you know what you're doing with the VG, it's close.

its not worth it to put a rb26 in a z32. just convert the vg30 into a twin turbo set up.
