The "experts" claim that texting while driving is 4 times more dangerous than drunk driving. If that's true, then why not make the penalty for it at least as severe as for DUI. When people start paying huge fines and having their license suspended and going to pay for some bull-shit classes, maybe it'll cut it down. There is only one answer: make it illegal to TWD. In the UK it has been illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving for calls/texts since December 2003, unless you use hands-free/Bluetooth. Get caught and you face a fixed penalty ticket of £60 ($98 approx) and 3 points on your licence (get 12 points for any driving offences and you lose the licence).
In addition, if you refuse the ticket you could go to Court and face being disqualified anyway, plus up to a £1000 fine ($1638 approx).
I just saw a video on a new iphone and Android app that will send text alerts to parents if teen drivers exceed a speed limit, goes outside of a pre-set geographic boundary, or is texting while driving. Its called SIPS, and it was featured on CNN. I think it will provide parents with an additionaly supervisory tool, and help teens to make better decisions if they know if they "push the limits" they will need to answer to mom and dad!

So you might miss the red light thats 10 feet in the air, the stop sign way to the side, that child crossing the street. Now how many times do you notice people looking at the person theyre tlking 2 in the car? no eyes on road..

My brother used to use one before he got this piece that links into the car, and it never messed his driving up, not one bit. And we live in Miami, where streets are constantly crowded. There is only one answer: make it illegal to TWD. In the UK it has been illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving for calls/texts since December 2003, unless you use hands-free/Bluetooth. Get caught and you face a fixed penalty ticket of £60 ($98 approx) and 3 points on your licence (get 12 points for any driving offences and you lose the licence).
In addition, if you refuse the ticket you could go to Court and face being disqualified anyway, plus up to a £1000 fine ($1638 approx).

I just saw a video on a new iphone and Android app that will send text alerts to parents if teen drivers exceed a speed limit, goes outside of a pre-set geographic boundary, or is texting while driving. Its called SIPS, and it was featured on CNN. I think it will provide parents with an additionaly supervisory tool, and help teens to make better decisions if they know if they "push the limits" they will need to answer to mom and dad!

A Woman texting and driving killed a man recently in my area and she probably won't even get jail time yet if a texting man hit a woman who could have been a mother or a caregiver of some sort that man would never see freedom again.

Yes! It's already illegal to put on makeup while driving, correct? Next we must ban snacking while driving. Then fiddling with the radio whilst driving. Conversation with passengers in the back seat is way too dangerous. In fact, even conversing with front seat passengers must be outlawed. Then make 'hands 10-and-2, eyes front!' the law. Soon...

@pegasusgiraffe Well, snacking requires little to no attention to do. With the radio, that requires little to no attention as well. Holding a conversation with others in the car requires no attention what so ever, because you're not using something that would impair your driving. Just your mouth. No one would ever follow the 10 and 2 eyes front law, because people do that naturally.

@smokintheblaze actually, even using a bluetooth headset while driving narrows your vision. So you might miss the red light thats 10 feet in the air, the stop sign way to the side, that child crossing the street. Just on Oprah a guy was TALKING not texting on his phone (same as talking to someone in the car) he didn't see the red light and tboned a 61 year old woman, killing her instantly. Now how many times do you notice people looking at the person theyre tlking 2 in the car? no eyes on road..

@liliceman78 Well, I don't know if a bluetooth headset can impair your vision like that, because if that was the case, then I would've been a lot of crashes. My brother used to use one before he got this piece that links into the car, and it never messed his driving up, not one bit. And we live in Miami, where streets are constantly crowded. Maybe that happens to some people, and not others. And the people I know aren't used to turning their heads while on the road, only at the destination.

@mwild007 Well it's highly unlikely just because of the make-up of the car and the state of gas. It could happen though. But I do agree with you simply because it is a distraction, and I mean....its gross to get into vehicles that smell like that. And it does something to you...cigarettes have a calming effect, but you need to be alert when you are driving. I think it should DEFINITELY be illegal for parents with children in the vehicle. Sorry, open windows really DON'T work.

Texting while driving is dumb, deadly and can kill you. The makers of this commercial, however, don't seem to be appealing to the fact that you can kill SOMEONE ELSE OR THEIR FAMILY OR THEIR PARTNER in addition to your own distracted pathetic self. They probably knew young texters wouldn't care about THAT since they were already texting and driving, not caring who they kill. They should make the driving age 21.

I say if someone admits to texting while driving, punch them in the face and plant your foot in their crotch. I'm sure a lot of us feel like that but that response is just as bad. Sadly people wont stop txting while driving until they kill someone or themselves. Laws should be harsh on "idiotic driving". A year in jail first violation, 5 years second and 10 years 3rd. Better than people getting killed because of others stupidity.
