Do you know how hard it is to play French Horn with no valves? When I was a good Horn player, I learned how to do it VERRY SLOWLLLLY. You mess around with your breath control and where you put your hand inside the bell.
I really worked at it, and I could hit all of the notes of the chromatic scale approximately. These guys -- and of course all Horn players that Bach worked with -- had to hit every note perfectly, and fast when required.

If I may be allowed to pass the comment, I concur- with the caveat that Frank Zappa left a worthy body of music before he passed on. I suggest listening to t "The Zappa Album" by Ensemble Ambrosius, as well as the works that FZ created with a view to acting as a Composer proper, rather than just as a rock artist. Admittedly not of the same flavor as Bach, but nonetheless brilliant music.
there was an equivalent of rap and pop music in bach's day, i'm pretty sure, but their music hasn't survived almost three centuries the way bach's music has.
You shouldn't compare classical music with modern - they are different types, and I think the world is a better place because of all the variety there is. :)
This is one of the ever best recordings of Bach's masterpiece. I am convinced, that tis group of musicians are outstanding and exceptional. You can see on the soloviolinist that she plays all the instruments. She just looks at the hornist and he switches betwen the thrilled notes as she wants to. Totally synchroned. Not every pro concertmeister is capable of that. And at all, she determines everythig. She is beatiful and an exceptional talent. I think the other musicians are also on that level.
@Trinavitus I think, the soloviolinist's name is Petra Müllejans. She is one of the two concertmasters of Freiburger Barockorchester (together with Gottfried von der Goltz, standing next to her). She is professor in Frankfurt a. M., Hochschule für Musik for baroque violin as well. I own two amazing CDs with her. BWV 1003 and 1005 performed together with 4 singers! (After an analysis by Helga Thoene, the same thing as on the CD "Morimur" with Christoph Poppen and the Hilliard Ensemble!)
@geigenmarie Thank you for sending me this information. I wanted to know their names for a long time, and you helped me a lot. Maybe it will be possible to contact her. I am an oboist ending up with my studies in Austria in June. It would be great to learn from such an exceptional talent about baroque music. But it would be also fine to stay in contact you in the future. You have read my thoughts with sending me this so-long-required things. Thank you very much!!!!
The thing I like about the brandenburg concertos is that its not like a violin, harpsichord, ect. concerto, it allows all of the instruments to be heard as opposed togiving one instrument the spotlight. Like in the third brand. concerto, it lets the basses be heard, and I love the low sounds, so it made me really glad.
The Brandenburgs are concerti grossi, a form where a small group of soloists (the concertino) is supported by the orchestra (or ripieno). In this particular one, the concertino consists of the horns, oboes and violino piccolo; while the rest of the instruments form the ripieno (I think; perhaps somebody who knows more about music than I do can confirm this).
Brandeburg 5 is particularly interesting because the harpsichord is part of the concertino (Bach was a virtuoso keyboardist).
the horns are not an easy brass instrument to play.... the pitch, in this recording, is determined by the lips, or "embouchure". modern horns now have valves, but, several pitches, close together, can be played without even using the valves, especially in the higher notes
can someone tell me what the name of the wood wind instruments are ? Im sure someone has asked the same thing but i dont wana have to look threw all the comments
not only that, they're playing it on natural horns. almost all those notes are being produced by moving their hand in the bell! and those high notes they have to snipe out of the air, very impressive!
I beg to differ. Ever heard Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor for organ? How about his second orchestral suite? Bach wrote so much music that most of us will never listen to even a tenth of it during our whole lives. I'd suspect he has written some other "pearls" other than the Brandenburg Concertos and the pieces I listed here.
Actually, this collection of "Six Concertos for Diverse Instruments", which Bach dedicated in 1721 to the Markgraf of Brandenburg-Schwedt, represents a fair copy of works of ealier origin, written for, or at least performed at, the court of His Most Serene Highness, Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Coethen, who was Bach's employer from 1717-1723.
The Markgaf's orchestra was too small to play them.
This collection was found in Brandenburg archives in the 19th c. Hence, the name "Brandenburg".
@AAMVideo I love Bach, Beethoven and Mozart... but I also love Kanye West, Jay-Z and Immortal Technique. Why so much hate? Why can't we appreciate all arts?
how do you mean? there are actually 3 oboe parts and 2 horn part to this piece. it wouldnt work to have one one on a part... and the string are only doubled as is needed to keep the balance.
The horn player with the ear ring is a cutie. Gotta love German men! Also, notice how the camera man doesn't even look at the principal violinist's violin or hands but her cleavage. Hilarious.
Just listening to this sends me back to that time. Such authenticity and outstanding performance would make Bach smile.Thank God, I can listen to this music in such a hellhole like Iraq.
This is outstanding. A good example of excellent Bach. Teachers should play this for their student orchestras to give them an example of what they should try to sound like.

The smaller three are oboes. The big one is a bassoon. They belong to the same woodwind family (with double reeds).

I may be mistaken, but the woman who is playing the bassoon was (in the last video, Adagio) playing an english horn. Another double reed.
