  • Interesting video, like the concept of multi-fuel to run a generator. A serious issue I saw was the power cord being used, a double end male plug is a disaster waiting for a place to happen. Video stated "I start the generator, plugged the power cord into his generator, (The other male end is now "HOT" and will shock/electrocute someone if the plug is touched. In my area the Utility Company discovers someone back feeding service; they will not restore without transfer panel is installed.

  • @waltjq43 My bad. I actually plug in the cord to the house then the generator. That way it is safe.

  • Just installed mine yesterday. Works great on propane, I am set up for natural gas and I will test it tomorrow. You just follow the instructions and it works. US carburetor is here in West Virginia so I had to pay taxes on the unit, but it wasn't much. Works as advertised.

  • @TheGwhipple Awesome. I hope you are enjoying WV. I love this little kit. It it much cheaper than using gasoline and much cleaner.

  • @LDSPrepper is that the C kit?

  • I have been considering converting my 17.5kw.... You helped me make up my mind. 16 gal tank at 3+ a gallon... too easy. A little more involved in the conversion but worth the time.

  • @VnVJONNYQUEST I'm glad I was able to help. You'll save a ton of money using natural gas on that big 17.5kw engine.

  • @LDSPrepper do you also have a smaller generator? i was thinking of having 2 and just running the big one too cool down the fridge freezer ect then the little one as needed plus as a loaner for the neibors if needed?

  • @fixt100 I do not. Sounds like a good and generous idea.

  • @VnVJONNYQUEST I think you will be very happy. Let me know if you can use this on such a large generator.

  • Great story on the successful adaptation to nat. gas. It's a fuel that is unlikely to be interrupted, is inexpensive and fairly clean. You should add some safety comments though: Hook up electric output to the house carefully - don't endanger a utility worker or damage generator when the grid comes back (install a transfer switch or interlock on the main panel). Keep exhaust from entering the house. Leak test the hose fittings with soapy water. And yes, do install a locking valve for the gas.

  • @realitychek Thank you very much for your recommendations. I agree 100%. I do go into more detail in my "How to prepare for any emergency" series.

  • Thanks 4 this vid.yes natural gas is cheap in tx.this makes good sense here.

  • OMG Thank you so much we will save for it!! :) kisses

  • LDS- nice video but have a question. just got a new bigger generac and need to know if this conversion can be done on any gen without screwing up the warranty? did you contact the manufacturer before doing this to make sure it would not damage the unit? do you have to remove this unit if you need to go back to gas? already have a gas line in my garage so this would be an easy hook up for me.

  • @nappiboy1000 The best way to get the right conversion kit it to telephone the company. I don't know if it affects the warranty. With it on I can run natural gas, propane or gasoline so no need to remove it.

  • Wonder how many code violations are shown in this video?

  • @akpch Good question. Would you like to research that and get back to us with the codes/references?

  • where can you get this conversion kit? I can't find it anywhere

  • @joshrussell357 Click the link in the description box.

  • how do you think a couple propane tanks would do ?

  • @solvssod I think they would do well. For 5,000 watts I used 5 gallons of gasoline an hour. I don't know how long a 20lb. propane tank will last. If you try it please let us know. My guess is it would last about the same as 5 gallons of gas.

  • Hey. If that cable has two male ends on it you are wired to code. Do you also have the proper interlock on you electrical panel interface?

  • @layitover I sure hope so.

  • can you start it without gas

  • @lelandlf absolutely. I don't use gasoline in it any more.

  • can you convert a generator to use moonshine

  • I bought a 4000 watt generator and a small hand carry 1000 watt portable unit.

I'm gonna buy the generator conversion kit, it seems like a great idea.

Could you also run a Coleman propane stove, heater and lantern with one?

Isn't it illegal to plug your generated voltage directly into your home wiring because of the danger to repairmen? I guess you could pull out your meter.

  • awesome video! I've been looking for something like this....so thanks for the link! 1 Question though........do I need to have an electrician wire the 240 power in to my house or can I use the one my dryer plugs into? Maybe a dumb question but you come across as a knowledgeable source. Thanks!

  • @joshuafarrell1976 Both ways work. Of course the dryer plug approach is faster, easier and cheaper. Just remember to turn off the main circuit breaker before turning on the generator so you don't send power out to the gird and shock a line man.

  • @LDSPrepper what happens when you lose your nat gas? mite wana get some propane tanks. also a power inverter for your car. some cars will burn less gas idling then your generator. and anether hint is diesel. not many people have diesel generators so way less chance of the diesel pump running out. my self i drive a diesel pickup and use a power inverter for my backup if i can't get gas. also diesel don't really go bad and diesel trucks have 2 batteries and my truck has the 160 amp alt.

  • Was your posting of this vid on 4/27/11 coincedental? We got hit by tornadoes that day and had no power for 5 days. couldnt get gas !!!

  • @bullikins Sorry to hear that. It could have been a coincidence or a message. You decide.

  • That steel security cable is NO OBSTACLE WHATEVER to bolt cutters, and a thief will be bringing those with him. They'll just wait till you're asleep or out of the house.

The pigtail at the meter needs to be physically supported, else just its own weight will encourage stress/corrosion cracking of the plug that supports it: Gas leak --> Boom!

  • @freddytheflintstone1 Nothing is strong enough to deter a determined individual. But for it could be enough to send a lazy person somewhere else. More support on the pigtail would be great. Any ideas?

  • @ChaffSort101 Thanks for commenting. Before I made the gas connection I called my natural gas company because I thought they had to do it. When I asked they said, "That is something the homeowner would do. We don't do that." So at least in my area this is definitely a do it yourself project.

  • @GhostTod I'm truly glad to hear this will help. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

  • At 1:58 you stated you powered five...(wind noise). So I do not know what you powered? Thanks for the vid.

  • @enriquesonora1500 I powered my home and my five neighbors homes. At my home we ran everything as normal with the exception of the A/C. But we ran the ceiling fans, side-by-side refrigerator and freezer, our chest freezer, Plasma TV, satillite dish, florescent lights, etc. At my neighbors houses my generator powered their refrigerators, freezers, TV, fan, floor lamps and cell phone chargers. So I did restrict them somewhat to what they could run.

  • one other thing, your engine on/off switch will fail. i replaced mine already. its a quick fix, thanks

  • @4inches4u It may. I don't ever use it. I turn off the gas and let the remaining gas in the gas line burn to completely burn up the fuel. This is a good idea especially with gasoline so there is no residue in the carb.

  • 14 days? omg where do u live? thats nice set up. what about the motor oil? do u use the type or did u change the weight? thanks for the info.....learn somthing new every day!

  • @4inches4u I live in Houston, TX. I changed the motor oil as directed in the generator manual. I don't remember how many hours between changes but it wasn't a problem. I use Mobil 1 10W-30 oil.

  • Hey LDS nice video.. I ordered the conversion kit and the company called me the next day and informed me I may have ordered the wrong kit. So after a few questions about my Gen she was right. The right kit was 80 bucks cheaper. Nice.. Lady was super nice and helpful. QUESTION: How much Natural Gas do you think you would use compared to Gas. Maybe you can point me to the answer if you don't know. Thanks Brother. GBTV.COM folks. Get the truth.

  • @cmobley69 They are great folks there. You will use about the same amount of natural gas as you do gasoline. It is cheaper to use natural gas because natural gas costs only pennies compared to gasoline.

  • Thanks for the lead on uscarb.com. I do have one comment about your connecting practices. The way your are connecting to your house may be ok for an emergency purpose but you left one really big step out, I read all post twice to look for it. You MUST disconnect your main breaker back to the power company, either located in the box or the main is outside. If you don't do this your 220 volts you send the power company becomes 5000 volts to a power technician on a pole or to wires on the ground.

  • @waynrdude Absolutely true. You MUST throw the main breakers to the power lines before you do anything else. Good catch. Thanks for commenting.

  • @LDSPrepper Ran into some issues with my kit and they were more than accommodating since the spacer didn't work out they are modding the carb ...They are a top notch company ...!Thanks again !

  • Was contemplating this kit for awhile .Just ordered it yesterday after seeing your video ...Thanks

  • @Malibu361 I am sure you will be very glad you did. It is a great peace of mind to know I can use multiple fuels and save money too.

  • Great vid. You mentioned you start the generator plug in to the generator and then plug in to the house. Those look like two male ends and you may be in for the shock of your life, very dangerous if that is exactly how you do it. Can you show us a vid of where you are plugging in with the 220? Are you back feading your panel or do you have a feading panel?

  • @vinceleto I plug in the male to the house (no power) then the other end (male) to the generator. That way there is never any power in the line until it is plugged into the generator. It is completely safe that way.

  • Man do I need this!!! We have a big 8KW generator running right now because of hurricane Irene and were powering 3 houses but man does that thing eat that gas up fast. I get 10 hours on half load on a 9 gallon tank lol

  • @Gman200108 Yup. You can usually count on using 1 gallon per KW per hour. If you want to use less get a smaller generator or get the conversion kit. I hope you are well and safe now. Congrats on having the generator.I powered five homes on my 5KW generator after Hurricane Ike. All my neighbors donated gasoline. It worked out well.

  • @LDSPrepper Thanks!

  • AWESOME!!! I'm SOLD!! Gonna order my kit tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Zbee167 I'm glad this video was helpful. If you have any questions you can call them. They are great.

  • THANKS for showing this conversion kit, till I saw this I had no plans for a gas gen, just did not want to deal with buying and storing gas. Thanks!

  • @HuntersConsulting I'm glad the video has helped. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

  • When videoing my sailing trips I taped a small piece of foam over the microphone of the camera. it cuts out the wind crackle.

  • @hoz49 Great suggestion. Thanks.

  • Thank you for an excellent video but I have one comment. The electrical pigtail cord from the generator has two male plugs. Suggest plugging into the house before the generator to avoid being shocked unless you are using a disconnect switch on the generator. Assume you have a transfer switch on the house.

  • @EJSNYNY You are correct. I do plug the male into the house first.

  • Make sure you put a load on the gen when you do your monthly runs. They use residual magnetism in the armature core to start the generating process. Loading the gen keeps this magnetism up.

  • @krawlr I didn't know that. I'll go do that today. Thank you very much for your comment.

  • I dont know why the video response option isnt working for me. Its my latest video on my page, just to show you that I purchased a generator. God bless.

  • Great video. I like your information and I like your attitude. Keep it up

  • Thanks for the Great Prepping Videos. Subscribed to your channel, so keep em coming. I was debating on a diesel or gas generator..... You have answered my question. Thanks

  • @lastquest I'm glad to have helped. Thanks for subscribing. More good info to come.

  • Great info, I'm ordering one for my generator as well. I have the same identical generator as yours!

  • i got 2 generator i going do one i got sump in celler so them thanks for infor

  • Good thinkin. Have to look in to one. Thanx for posting.

  • Just what I had in mind. After hurricane Ike I noticed that gasoline couldnt be purchased at any price. My home lost electricity and phone service, but the natural gas stayed up without fail. I figure that this is a great way to get the electricity for less than gasoline.

  • @19hawk11 You were absolutely correct. Now you know exactly how to do it. I'm glad this helped.

  • WOW!!!!! Great info!! I ordered one for my Genny!

  • @sciwolf359 Glad to hear that. You'll love it.

  • @sciwolf359 Awesome. Again, I am not associated with USCarb.com but I am a very happy customer. Share the conversion kit with your friends and help them save money and be prepared. That will probably happen naturally because you will be having so much fun with it.

  • Great Video , Thank you for sharing the information .

  • Can you make a short video on how you connect your generator to your house. I'm particularly interested in the hardware you use that allows you to splice into your electrical box (if that's what you do?) Your videos are very informative. Keep up the good work.

  • @alincalcity Because I did it myself and haven't had it inspected I don't want any liability by showing how I did it. Sorry.

  • @LDSPrepper Hey no problem. I can do some research on it on the internet. Thanks anyway. Please keep making your informative videos though.

  • Great video, thanks for the link and all the info.

  • We already have a 5200 watt generator and wanted to buy another natural gas generator... you may have saved me 2000 dollars if this works...

  • @btigtime2 I am very frugal. I was looking at a whole house natural gas generator and decided that is nuts compared to $200 for a conversion kit. And I can take it anywhere. It works for me.

  • Great vid ,great info.

  • Another really great idea, I am definitely going to get a couple of these. Thank You. Keep up the great video's, the members of LDS are really on top of it.

  • You sure got it right about the herds buying gensets in a panic..I see that almost EVERY year, it also applies to chain saws, bottles water, and many other items as well. Quite often, I buy my prep items RIGHT after hurricane season.

  • @dafrogtoad Yup. I see it every time there is a potential disaster or shortage. One time I went to Home Depot and just watched the crazy people just for entertainment.

  • Outstanding video.... Thanks for the time, link and info.

  • THANKS LDS... GREAT VID

  • you really need to cap that valve your one simple mistake from going boom

  • Great video. I would also wonder about the seals and gaskets drying out from not running gasoline occasionaly.

  • @thump186 I had never thought about that. I could simply put a cup or two of gasoline in every 6 months and run it that way. I run it any way to make sure it is producing electricity. I heard if you don't the generator parts stops working. On my old one it rusted so it stopped working.

  • Do you know kow long will a 20lb propane tank last on the 5000 watt draw.

  • @usfreedom22 Great question. I do not. You could call the people at uscarb.com and ask. I plan on using my propane for cooking and my natural gas for power so I haven't tried it. You will also need a propane regulator to lower the pressure of the propane coming out of the tank to the generator. It is the normal kind you can get at BBQ centers, maybe Home Depot, etc.

  • @LDSPrepper

Thanks, I just ordered mine. They said it burns the same amount. So if you burn 5 gallons of gas in 12 hrs you will burn 5 gallons of propane in 12 hrs. 20 lb tank is equal to 5 gallons of propane. Great Video. I added it to my favorites so hopefull you will get some more people to watch it. Keep the great info coming. Thanks

  • @usfreedom22 I really appreciate that you took the time to call them and posted the information here for others. Very considerate. Thank you.

  • @LDSPrepper

    No problem.

  • @usfreedom22 Good question, just saw the video and was thinking the same thing.... Did yoiu by any chance go to US Carb with your question? If not, I'll shoot them off a quick email.
