  • 2 broken strings says it all. Intense rendition of one of his finest songs.

  • Absolute American born genius song writer.

  • My all time favorite performer. I would follow him from show to show around the country if I couls. He's that good.

  • i was there i was 4 years old!!!! i was in the front you MIGHT see us me and my Dad.

  • Outstanding!

  • Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous and this was, I believe after he had surgery on his throat for cancer. Amazing what he can do. And his stories, and story songs are so wonderful. I've had the privilege and honor of meeting this gentleman on several occasions and he is just as nice as can be. If you haven't seen him live, give it a try - he won't let you down.

  • What a beautiful human being.

  • It's about white babies and SHADOWS!! He is so much better live!

  • its awesome how he breaks i think 3 strings rocking out at the end and keeps jamming away.

  • J.P.s the best ever, not sure who u wanna listen to?throw on some Prine you can't go wrong. He makes you want to pick up your guitar and jam with friends, excuz i must find my capo.

  • folk fest. lake marie. awesome.

  • damn skippy

  • This song gets me every time.

  • You aint kidding. I hear ya.

  • Who is the guitar guy in the grey suit??

  • jason wilber

  • jason wilber is quite the guy i had a chance to talk to him last time i saw JP in concert hes a real nice guy

  • Dave Jaques

  • They just don't write em like that anymore. Much respect for John for all he has done. Sometimes I wonder just how many people play the guitar because of him

  • ahh baby! The master at work.

  • best lyricist of all time next to dylan?

  • better than dylan imho. but not by much

  • poor lake elizabeth... nobody likes her..

  • Man oh man. I always come back to this post. Prine in his prime - thanks jp & Taylor510ceL9

  • I wan't that Gibson J-200 like a fat kid wants pie (I can relate to that as well). No matter how many times I watch this video or listen to it on the album, it's always immensly good.

  • badass.

So, does anyone know the words to Louie, Louie?

  • Yeah sing it drunk, record it and listen to it. That's what the Kingsmen did.

  • Louie Louie oh no Me gotta go Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said Louie louie, oh baby Me gotta go Fine little girl waits for meCatch a ship across the sea Sail that ship about, all alone Never know if I make it home CHORUS Three nights and days I sail the sea Think of girl, constantly On that ship, I dream she's there I smell the rose in her hair CHORUS Okay, Let's give it to them, right now! GUITAR SOLO See Jamaica, the moon above It won't be long, me see me love Take her in my arms again CHORUS

  • Let's take it on outta here now Let's go!

  • John always seems to break a string when he plays this song, like on Sessions 54...but ya still can't keep a good man down....he's still one in a million....Jimi

  • He broke 2 here actually, maybe he should try some heavy guage on that thing hah.

  • John Prine is about the best god damn songwriter I have ever heard.

  • 'Many years later we found ourselves in Canada

Trying to save our marriage and perhaps catch a few fish

    Whatever came first'

Thank you very much. Excellent song!

  • What an entertainer. I saw him at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans before Katrina closed it down and again at the '08 New Orleans Jazz Fest. It was either him or Stevie Wonder. What an easy choice.

  • A Prine tour-de-force. I've been going to John's shows since the mid-70's and this is my favorite song. Makes you wanna laugh, cry, and transcend this plane of being all at the same time. Anybody have a vid of my other fave - the " Saddle in the Rain" version with the extra verse about the flock of blackbirds?

  • John Prine writes two kind of songs: good songs and great songs! This is a great song. I love this guy beyond words! If you have not see him LIVE make it a point to.

  • No.

  • What??!!! No Way!!

  • Absolutely NOT.

Even Dylan is still going strong... as he can.

May we all be singing at their ages.

    GOD Bless 'em.

  • Hey freetickeys, You replied to me about chris knight .(Broken Plow). You don't like John Prine ? Or am I just terribly mistaken?

  • John Prine is one of the greatest singer/ songwriters of all time.

  • Amen brother. I'm in total agreement . Last comment was in error. 24 days till I see him again. Thanks for all your postings. I'm listening to one of your Chris Knights right now.

  • Ok, I'd say very embarassed the moment I sent it. I'm at work now and just distracted. All apologies. I'm not good on the comp. , but thanks for the invite and I'll try. Wish me luck.

  • never mind. My bad read the wrong message. All apologies. But I have seen him many times. He does not lip sink.

  • A true ICON. God bless John Prine and JOHNNY CASH.

  • This is what you call a tour de force!! Just the best. John Prine is a one and only, original genius of language and music.

  • I knew he was going to do this show and I really wanted to make it but couldn't. Thanks for the capture. Love the P. F. F. :)

  • Ohhhh Man,

This Song reminds me on a very special vacation

God Bless Canada almost the Best Place on Earth.

    Thanks John,your the man

    Your the Captian

  • i really love listening to johnprine!!ive seen him several times always a great!! time.

  • Thanks to Jan & Lisa for turning me on to this legend in '94, when I moved to California. Life would be less without this guy's brilliance, and this song affects me more than any of his other amazing compositions. John rules the roost.

  • I seen John a few times live and crowds just can't help but join in...drive some folks NUTS too. But, that is the nature of his tunes, he draws folks into his music. It's life, and we all live it. John live...well..it's life at it's best.

  • This is the first time I've ever heard this song, man I've never heard a bad prine tune...nor have I ever heard him this cooked up, what this guy does with simplicity, umph and meaning is way beyond almost all in the feild.

  • the crowd really sucks in this video. i mean they clap and all at the end, but i saw john prine and his band in vermont at the flynn theatre 4/26 and it was awesome. people yelled shadows, and all went ssssss when he said sizzling. and he did the finale in this song for like 5 times as long. it was amazing. amazing show. well i guess his throat was a lot more healed now then in 2004 also...

  • wow, neat story, it's so important to keep sharing stuff like that. That's what's great about you tube, can do it easily, otherwise I'd have to read it somewhere and that's not likely to happen soon. I've never seen him, but now I really want to...before it's too late.

  • We saw Prine and his band play last night in New Hampshire, and this song absolutely tore the house down. One of the best live performances I have ever seen.

  • I was there too! And this song performance was incredible!!!!

  • The NH show...

  • the jam that they're doing now on the end of this song is highlight of the show.

  • "the wind was blowin'/ especially through her hair/there was four italian sausages cookin' on the outdoor grill/ and, man, they was sizzlin'". Brilliant.

  • soungs actully titled "peacefull waters".. SHADOWS!

  • no you are wrong it is lake marie

  • it definitely is titled "Lake Marie"

  • A perfect live version of a great song. I've watched it six times running, and that seems not quite enough. Thanks Taylor

  • "Lake Marie" is actually "Lake Mary" it is a real lake on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois. Lake Elizabeth is its "Twin Lake" and the town they are on is Twin Lakes. Great song, great singer. We long spending time in Twin lakes and on Lake Mary.

  • i have been in love with this man for 35 years. he has helped me through good times and so many bad times. i have seen him about 20 times. He is always awesome. Always.

  • MyKeyway - Yeah.

  • When I Think of John Prine I remember driving along the coast of florida. back then i didn't pay attention to what was on the radio. but i couldn't help myself. I was looking out into the ocean and listening to illegal smile and hello in there and 6 o clock news and flag decal and all these great songs.

  • cool, nice imagery

  • What's this song about? Aside from the obvious. At the end how does him seeing bodies on the news "slam" his love. Or is it really just a history of the lake complared over time with his relationship? I thought the bodies were him and Marie but he says he saw it on the news so I guess not.

  • Actually I understand that the lake is Marie and not his chick. I meant I thought the bodies were him and his girl. At any rate, I think it's a metaphor for his love and how it died. Guess I answered my own question :) Italian sausages sizzlin...this guy is a treasure.

  • the bodies, yes a metaphor, in a sense the way by which everything in your life will invariably come full circle and remind you in some way, (shadows) of something lost.

  • Well put my friend. Well put.

  • Sehr guter Titel!!! Vielen Dank

    für das Video.

  • The only thing I can say is : AWESOME!!! :-)

  • A legend in his own time. To John Prine!

  • Wow. First time ever I hear this guy and this song. Really nice anthem. Found the chords and lyrics. Will be playing this today.

  • Best version of this I've heard yet.

  • I remember when my dad first got me listening to John Prine, it was the Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings tape, and I must've listened to this song 100 or more times that week. That whole album was just filled with great songs, but there was something about this song I liked a lot, it always stood out in my memory.

  • Gives me goose bumps, I like this performance better than the 'sessions' version also on youtube.

  • prine is awesome USA be real proud he played

in DERRY RECENTLY 2.15 hours no break voice was deadly Tommy @ Dublin

  • Love JP-saw him back in the 70s at the Troubador, followed him since then, and saw his last month at Cerritos Performing Arts Center. He's so lovable.

  • I was there too. That was a great performance, wasn't it? I had front row seats, I hope he comes back this way, I'll definitely buy those tickets again. He ranks up there with Lightfoot for me.

  • What a fucking tune. I see him live next week - SHADOWS!

  • Have fun!

  • I saw at the London Palladium and I called out to him "Lake Marie" as my request and to my astonishment it was the next song he sang. SHADOWS! He did a brilliant gig and he was really enjoying himself too. Julia

  • ACE!

  • VoiceofBaghdad - You like him now?

  • I do indeed. He is FANTASTIC!

  • He's ace - would that there were more people like him.

  • Awesome, simply..........Awesome

  • Special...Prine is one of the special things in life! A real gift...JP forever!

  • Watching this video puts me on the edge of tears. This man is a God. I've seen him live once. I wanted to have him back to the house for a beer. A national treasure.

  • John is great

  • I love this song..great story..John is wicked

  • saw this in Portsmouth VA great show!!1 GREAT post!

  • I have the CD with this song, but I never really HEARD it until i saw him perform it live! What a way to close a show. So much more to this man than an illegal smile.

  • Haunting, chilling. Superb.

  • I saw Prine in 1973 at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C He was great. He's gotten even better over the years. Who does that?

  • Prine is great... but who else gets better? Bowie...Dylan...Jagger...Van Morrison...actually, no...you're right. They didn't get THAT much better!

  • Personally I don't care for the comparison perspective.I think each artist has their own unique talent and should be respected for that.I do agree with raucusjoe above that John Prine is a national treasure, especially after he wrote the song about the cowboy from Texas.

  • Kiaweking: Spot on Friend. I realized I've heard alot less Prine than the Prine that Prine's done did. And that's like knowing there's xmas presents somewhere just for me. Just let it trickle in like sweet summer rain. And as a Texan, just remember in spite of our infamous 'shrubs', we also have Billy Joe Shaver, Kinky and some guy called Willie I think. God hasn't abandoned us yet. Peas!

  • Oh my God! What a masterpiece! Thank You!

  • Only John Prine song I have heard. Love it!

  • You really should hear more!

  • First time I've heard a live version - top post man.

  • Marie! Notice how two of his guitar strings break during the strumming at the end? I agree with everyone else, special performance from a legend.

  • One of the great songs by one of the great singers and song writers. I love it. SHADOWS. SHADOWS.

  • SHADOWS! Indeed!

  • Where does he come up with this stuff? One of my top 2,000 John P. lines: "Do you know what blood looks like on a black & white video? SHADOWS! SHADOWS!

  • Lake Marie an American Classic. Great song loved it.

  • Nothing quite like Prine...An american classic!!

  • AGREED!

  • The best song ever...

  • thank you for this video !!!

  • inimitable and unstopable...THE MIGHTY JOHN PRINE!
