Thanks for the tutorial! but I have a question. I kinda did a vibrating sound but it sounds so "throat-y", like it always sounds like I'm about to spit. I think it may be because it's the back half of my tongue vibrating instead of the front part. Is this possible? If so how can I improve it??
@BeastifiedCodfather Actually if you have understood what he said - which I doubt - you have heard that he said we don't have this consonant /r/ in Cantonese and Mandarin, that's why it is often hard to learn this sound for Chinese people.
Omg thank you so much! Your explanation saved me from years of struggling. Can't believe I can pronounce this now by having watched a short video. Xie Xie Ni Ah!
Thank you for posting this, along with the English translation in the description. I can make the sound naturally, but I wanted more information on how it happens.
I can't vibrate the tip of my tongue... what the fuck, only the back of my tongue ever vibrates. If I leave the gap where the back of my tongue isnt touching my throat, nothing happens at all just air leaves my mouth. Fuck rolling r's
THIS VIDEO WAS AWESOME. i learned how to do it just by watching this once, and no other video helped or got close. I dont speak cantonese but the english translation did the job. i thank you for making this video, it made me a happy guy.
This is really good, I never thought of using the sounds you make to snore as part of the trill sound. I started practicing how to do the trill two days ago. I read multiple sources.
I find the wikihow with the multiple techniques really helpful, as it includes methods such as the Butter/Ladder as well as the Tiger Method. You also have the crazy Russian guy at 6:00 in his video Rolling R's Baybee]
My sound isn't smooth but I can vibrate my tongue. Big step.
thanks! finally i'm able to do trilling! now i need to practice on putting it in words like pedro. I really liked the fact about snoring. i think that's what helped the most! And consider putting this in english, it's really helpful. again, many thanks
I'm a American born Cantonese, and I finally understand why I can't roll my r's, thanks to your video. Is it the same rolled r as in german proununciations?
we understand what we're suppose to do and there's nothing wrong with english speakers, it's just very difficult to acquire the trill after you pass a certain age
It seemed really obvious that it was not English, and I assumed the person I was replying to knew that.
I don't really understand how you misinterpreted a facetious remark about what language the video was in as an attack on native English speakers for having difficulty with a foreign phone, but I am sorry for the confusion. Attempts at humor, no matter how modest, are always less fun when misunderstood.
I will strive harder to create the Ultimate YouTube Comment Joke.
this is probably the best tutorial i've found so far. Thank you very much ! (it's probably because I'm cantonese as well so the english tutorials i've seen is just not too easy to grasp for me.
I can't roll my Rs yet still but when I do the "coughing up mucus sound" with my tongue up I can feel my tongue going up and down. Need more practice to get the hang of it I guess~
First of all, why aren't you speaking English? Secondly, why are you whispering? Great speaking skills dude your reaching a really wide audience *sarcasm*

i don't understand, you said we would just need to try a few times and it would be easy to pronounce the R sound, and i still can't get the tongue part-o- how to lock the air in? i still get gaps and the air slips through...
You make your tongue kind of pointy, and BARELY touching the roof of the mouth. I start by opening my mouth like I would normally speak, and start to close it as I start to speak- bringing tongue up at same time. Air goes between tongue and roof of mouth.
@AuddieDivine I'm kicking myself in the ass because I can't figure this shit out. Everyone says it's so easy, and explain it like it's cake. I've read and listened to every single "Roll your R's" video, and searched google as well. I get what you're supposed to do, but I can't do it. Also, how do you blow the air? Does it go on the sides of your tongue? Or does it just go on top? Is your tongue flat, or is it stressed a little making it more round? They don't explain it well enough.
Thanks for the comments, I'm going to make it subtitled in English soon. Or I would make an English version of the video. Which one would you prefer? Let me know by sending me messages or leaving comments here.
