The best drummers learn from other great drummers and from our roots, which is jazz. It's great if you can play a fast double bass pattern with your feet, but it's much better if you can think in a creative way and play solos like Neils.... That's why I enjoy Rush's music over any other "metal" or "rock" band.
Thats just so creative. Neil's really pushing the compositional aspect of drumming here. He's basically an electronic drummer but with that foundation has more of a palette of expression. He loves those V-Drums for sure. At the core of course is that mastery of timing and independence in timing, the almost fundamental technicality of drumming and then he ads composition and performance over it. Taking drumming further in a way. Thats why he's the man, Peart.
Bummer that this isn't the whole solo, I was there this night. Just before this movement, before the big snare solo, he switched from matched to trad. grip and dropped his left stick on the snare. The entire audience gasped! Neil shook his head, rolled his eyes, smiled, picked up the stick and continued. I thought it was pretty cool to see that he's human, not some machine, like some people choose to make him out to be. Rumors of a tour late 2010. Woo hoo!! I'll be there! Long live RUSH!

Yes there is no one and i repeat no one like the masterful Neil peart. HE IS A CONSTANT student and always looks to improve his mastery of the drum. His thirst for knowledge of drumming is limitless. He is a genius in every sense of the word. He is the greatest living drummer and arguably of all time. I love Keith moon, stewart copeland, and john bonham but neil is more diverse and talented than all of them. Buddy rich passed the torch to neil.

well I think for each different tour he sort of comes up with a kind of main solo and leave some room for improving, and then it is different for each tour. So you might have seen ones from the same tour, where it has the same base, but is altered a litlle here or there. All I know is first time i saw him, it completely got me back into drumming, and I always think it is worth the ticket price just for the solo, but the rest of the show is great too.

The probablem with drumming is it can only be taken so far. All the drimmers you mentioned are great. But, they can all do just as good as the next great drummer. What has been done on drums can basically be reproduced by anyone who is good on drums. One solo is basically indistinguishable from the next. This why when solos are done in concerts everyone leaves to take a shit.
You are so naive... You think that all solos are just double bass and hitting the same drum over and over again like so many do... Great drummers like Neil Pert have solos that contain things so inconceivably amazing and original that its almost impossible to reproduce... He uses more than just toms and snare, he uses all forms of percussion. Percussion has NO limits to sound.
P.S.. You're right, its easy to reproduce a solo, but the real skill is making it up.
And that my friend is how i can tell you are a real drummer, becuase regardless of how good you are you love drumming and understand good drumming when you hear it.

Yes there is no one and i repeat no one like the masterful Neil peart. HE IS A CONSTANT student and always looks to improve his mastery of the drum. His thirst for knowledge of drumming is limitless. He is a genius in every sense of the word. He is the greatest living drummer and arguably of all time. I love Keith moon, stewart copeland, and john bonham but neil is more diverse and talented than all of them. Buddy rich passed the torch to neil.

The way I recall it is I get incensed by some message by some guy w/666 in his name maybe it came to my comments. then I go to the group and rage cause Iknow their are more out there in there that don't even have the balls to put 666 in their name. Thinchap's right about one thing: most vocal, outspoken Christians are (in my experience) harsh, judgmental bigots who carry around "repent" signs and tell people they're going to hell for whatever reason. Christianity only REQUIRES faith, but Jesus wanted us to love and forgive, not judge and condemn, even if it's not required for salvation. Oh and he plays the way he plays because thats what he wants to play!! when you have over 40 Gold and Platnum records im sure you would play what you like as well. As far as endurance goes, I saw Rush last year and they played 3 1/2 hours with no opening act.

well I think for each different tour he sort of comes up with a kind of main solo and leave some room for improving, and then it is different for each tour. So you might have seen ones from the same tour, where it has the same base, but is altered a litlle here or there. All I know is first time i saw him, it completely got me back into drumming, and I always think it is worth the ticket price just for the solo, but the rest of the show is great too.

The probablem with drumming is it can only be taken so far. All the drimmers you mentioned are great. But, they can all do just as good as the next great drummer. What has been done on drums can basically be reproduced by anyone who is good on drums. One solo is basically indistinguishable from the next. This why when solos are done in concerts everyone leaves to take a shit.

You are so naive... You think that all solos are just double bass and hitting the same drum over and over again like so many do... Great drummers like Neil Pert have solos that contain things so inconceivably amazing and original that its almost impossible to reproduce... He uses more than just toms and snare, he uses all forms of percussion. Percussion has NO limits to sound.
P.S.. You're right, its easy to reproduce a solo, but the real skill is making it up.

he makes for a great percussionist....but a lousy drummer.......and he is lucky that he was able to create music that went well with percussion style of playing.....what on earth would he have done on some of Zepplin's tunes.......ah, you have to have a mind for real drumming......too bad not too many drummers have the mind for it........speed is not impressive, it just shows that if you practice enough..anyone can be fast....but you need the mind to realy be a drummer....that is rare!
