when you understand the pratical applications of the techniques you will understand how effective it is and its alot better than most of the crap they have out there
This is true but in my eyes and my VERY limited knowledge of martial arts.. Even a throw is offencive. After all. YOu have someone use your own inerta to toss you and you could easiliy break arms and such from teh fall. THis is justmy own personal openion though.
I think I can see where you're coming from on this, however I have to disagree. Throws can be offensive, but only if you initiated them.
In aikido you only throw somebody who has already initiated the attack on you. If your opponent hadn't attacked you, they wouldn't have been thrown. Hence, defensive.
hmmm. Im not a big aikido guy as far as my knowledge goes but I gues you have a valid point as well. Still dont see it that way but at the same time a very valid point.
Traditional Aikido training begins with the mind and the body being calm and relaxed until they harmonise with each other. Your question of the throw being offensive is valid.
But you must see it as throwing the arguement or attack back to the assailant in a smooth controlled flowing action.
His brick wall will meet your relaxed and harmonised mind & body and he will be damaged mentally , physically or both.
I hope this goes someway to explaining your question.
That is unless you let your opponent destroy himself. That is aikido. They come at you, make the first move, and you take their force and put it into a painful joint lock they can't get out of without breaking something.

wat up with u with object that look like a dicks man even a gay dude wouldnt point out stupied like u..man u must love dick seems like everything u see look like a dick to u...ey dont eat that hot dog oh nevermind
at 1:50 he basically just gives the defender his hand! real fights don't look like this! nobody who wants to fight you is just going to give you their hand!
it's like a starting point. to learn a technique you must start at some point. like in karate when you practice hitting, you just hit the air, next you can learn to use it in a fight. so when a teacher demonstrates these techniques he does it in "basic-mode"
This is the thing most misunderstood by non-Aikidoka. All they see is the method of study, not the result or its application. Looking at Aikido from their view, I can't blame them for having major doubts. But then, there is still so much doubt & dissention within Aikido.
Not sure I understand. IMO, in the end it is all the same Aikido - O'Sensei's Aikido. And the spirituality is built in, to the same degree regardless of "style". The only difference I've seen is in the method or focus of training. If we look at differences, 10 people in 1 dojo do 10 different kinds of Aikido, based on factors like body type, personality, etc & what they each actually learn from what sensei teaches.

One truth. No war is won defencivly. Even there counters are offence. I do not understand why they say its a 'defencive' art. This is just me though
RenmarStriff 2 years ago
I believe it's because in Aikido there are no strikes. You throw your opponent around until they're tired, or they give up.
In this sense, it is purely defensive.

I believe the classical naginata style shown in the video is Tendo ryu. Can anyone confirm this?

well, all i got to say is the Tomoki way, from this vid, is going to get you stabbed just like a lot of the way some 'traditional' aikido does

All the aïkido shown in the film is very poor. Attacks are not powerfull nor realistic.
And the naginata is the weapon of samurai wives, not samurai women (except maybe Tomoe Gozen)
erigbzh 3 years ago
the unique mistake is that there is no samurai women...
true that was women training to defense when the men were out... but samurai is a title... men's title... only a son of a samurai, is a samurai...
Akuma20 3 years ago
there where women who fought mainly before 11th centuary and they were called samurai?

@lagook There is not women called samurai.... just that....

agree!! but in daily practice, it's just a method of practicing... this not oyo waza..
but then again, tomiki aikido is not popular nowadays
