When their career is finally over, U2 will not only leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of rock, they'll leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of music. Their 'competition' isn't just rock legends like The Beatles, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones-- it's people like Mozart, Beethoven, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin. Anyone who doesn't understand this needs to listen to U2's ENTIRE catalog, which rivals anyone's-- EVER.
amen @eggman1269 ...people, take any chance that comes your way to see them live. I could not believe it was even happening. It took me almost all of a year to pay my friend back for the ticket, as I was 15 when I saw them but now I'm so glad I went ahead with it. greatest experience in my short life so far, but I doubt much if anything will trump it. and this song? goodness. freakin CHILLS down the spine is an understatement.
This song is like a fine wine. For me it has gotten and continues to get better with time. The ending with Edge playing those beautifully solemn notes and Bono's added verse is the best part of this song. Goosebumps. And I love the fact that Larry contributes on vocals...
Words cannot express what its like to see this band live, in person, when they play their back catalogue along with future classics like this song. The raw emotion and passion drips and pours with every lick and verse. I get chills listening to moment of surrender, especially when performed live. Of the newer material its the one i keep going back to. You cannot replace God or love with songs & verse, but you can replace everything else. I would imagine this is what that sounds like.
Your life is short, it's the longest thing you''ll ever do, the worse the curse was that your dreams came true. God is a mirror in which each man sees himself Hell is place where you don't need any help When I first met you, your face was like snow Wherever I went to, you wanted to go Your face, Your grace, your lipstick trace, your case as you put it down, A-17 on the ground, Your faith in a Clown Don't leave me now Don't leave me now alone in this song Don't leave me now...alone in this song
THX to any holy spirit or Budha Sidharta Allah what ever if they exist that I ve seen them live twice in less than a year. As a Metal fan I must admitt that U2 owns all bands just like Elvis owns the place. This song is a perfect example of creativity without drugs always stay at the same highest level.

This is one of those songs, (and there is at least one or two on every U2 album), that sneak up on you, and despite not getting a ton of airplay, grows into your soul til the point that it may be one day put on the mount rushmore of U2s best work. Like a previous poster said, this song is a great on cd or youtube, but after being lucky enough to see it live, it was more like a religious experience. Even seeing it on youtube still brings chills. How do these guys continue to have that effect?

I've always liked U2, e ver since i was a little kid... back in those days, "War" was the album and they were starting to get airplay on MTV... i enjoyed "The Joshua Tree" and i considered them always a rock band, even when a lot of people thought U2 was a new wave band similar to Depeche Mode... not to say i cherished all 90s and 2000s... i like U2 a lot, but what i despise is, more or less, the 97% of the U2 fans, all of which don't know shit about music... P.D. Did you know Bono is the only person in history who has been nominated for a Grammy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Nobel Prize? and he won all except the Nobel Prize ...
Just like "One" was about an aids patient dying of aids, Brian Eno said this song was about Bono's character of a person on the edge of desperation and out of hope. This song truly has the depth and the passion that U2 had been missing since "Please" in 1997. Certainly, the best song since "One" from "Achtung Baby".

I am a massive U2 fan, but this song is a bore. Nothing like Mysterious Ways in Sydney, Kite in Boston, Streets Have No Name at Slane Castle, etc. Even the lyrics are ordinary for U2 Standards 'ATM Machine'?? As Seinfeld says, that's an Automatic teller Machine Machine. Next...
@SpeedKlz That line in Kite is an aside from the song. I believe they said at the time it was just a way to put a time stamp on it. As for this song, everyone that loves this song seems to be religious. Those that aren't don't have that connection. That's what separates it from Still Haven't Found or, for that matter, the original version of Mercy. That said, I like Moment. I just don't think it's among u2's best.
@spammeifyoumust Critics agree. It was placed as the "best song of the decade" by RollingStones. Even Metallica voted for this song, This song is the best U2 song since "One" in 1991. The passion, the soul, the choir like feel, powerful composition and the depth of the meaning of the lyrics make it one of the best U2 song ever. "All that you can't..." was a joke and most of the songs are completely forgotten except "Beautiful day".

It is true that this song is about surrendering to heroin addiction, but the end part is surely a reference to his wife Ali..( when he first met her her face was like snow, wherever he went she wanted to go, her face her grace her lipstick trace, age 17 on the ground(age he met her at school) her faith in a clown, don't leave me now don't leave me now....if you notice, Bono always finds little ways to speak to Ali in almost every song...true love is alive
@gigiall4me Actually, by Bono's account, she was 12 when they met. They didn't start dating till she was a couple years older, though. But you're right- he ALWAYS talks to her. Awww....
Great song. Love the Brian Eno interview on the making of this song and the idea of collaborative creative efforts just kicking in to make something beautiful. It's amusing to see the comment threads and the interest in wanting to know the exact words. I kinda like the idea of leaving them open to interpretation that way it's a great way to make some kind of personal connection. Thanks for the music.
.....je pense que les paroles de bono que j ai les plus apprecie de tout ses albums ...et l eclat de sa voix a rose bowle est sans precedent sur ce texte...texte d ailleurs a soumettre a un bac philo ....ca le mérite ....pascal
what did he say at the end? i just understand "life is short bur it´s the longest thing you`ll ever do" can somebody tell me the whole thing? Thanks!!!
@Skatdriver Here is what I think he says - "Life is short but it's the longest thing you'll ever do, the worst the curse was that your dreams came true, God is a mirror in which each man sees himself, Hell is a place where you don't need any help. When I first met you your face was like snow, wherever I went you wanted to go, your face your grace your lipstick trace your case as you put it down, 8:17 on the ground, your faith in a clown, don't leave me now..."
@Skatdriver All is correct up to the end. He says A17 on the ground. Refers to crashing off heroin. The character Bono sings about here is an addict, "Tied me a wire to let the horses run free" is a direct clue to that. A17 was an experimental military aircraft, not much evidence on that though as it was top secret, and yes one did supposedly crash years ago. The character he's sing about is crying out for help, "Don't leave me now."
This song is amazing and at the same time very spooky...its hard not to be moved when watching this video or listening to this especially in a live setting. The spoken word at the end that begins "life is short but it's the longest thing you'll ever do...." is very haunting. We are merely human, flesh & blood with some bones in the mix, this song reminds us of the soul. WIthout it we all melt away eventually...the spirit remains....give into the spirit. This is U2 at or very near their best.
When I first heard this, I thought, wow, this is really good, then I realized it is very deep. It's about a heroin addiction and crashing. It's about loosing everything you have, including loved ones and yourself. Having been there, not heroin, but alcohol, I fell in love with this song. I am a huge U2 fan, maybe the biggest, many of their lyrics are spiritual, but also deal with life and it's struggles. Having been the A17 on the ground a few times, I love this song because of the deepness
Is this song about Heroin use or/and the moment a person finds God/? Tied myself with wire suggests a person looking for a vain, and the horses running free, for me, suggest the Heroin running free like wild horses across this persons body. ATM Machine, realization in reflection what that person had become, feeding his habit. Let me know if i'm well off!
@lostregone You are spot on. A17 on the ground at the end refers to crashing. All of it apparently cause the person he was writing about, which I also heard is the same referred to in "Unknown Caller" to loose connection with his girlfriend or wife. Some say this could refer to Bono's past, but who knows? "I did not notice the passer by's and they did not notice me" is probably a reference to people who are high do not really notice things going on around them.
This album kicks butt. Yes, it's different, but that is what makes U2 so great. Every album, every song is so different. Those who say all their songs sound alike never really listened to them, deeply. This music is created for those of us who appreciate only the best. Long live U2!!!
@kellykinsellives crappy album? Why do people have to say shit like this? Every song is excellent, just may not be your style. NLOTH, Magnificent, MOS, Boots, Being Born, White as Snow (GREAT track), Breath, and COL (under-rated) does not make a crappy album.
@drvertigo : I have to agree that, by U2's standards, it's a TERRIBLE album. AWFUL. There are some utterly brilliant moments on it, and Moment is one of them (and the title track is SOOO aweomse)--Moment is incredible live as well, but NLOTH is a HUGE disappointment for this long-time U2 fan. And no, I'm not one of those annoying idiots stuck in the Joshua Tree days. I've seen them 28 times. I love U2. I just hate the new album. Actually, I'm not a big fan of the last 3, and that bums me out :(
@skrason A matter of opinion. By U2 standards? Not sure if I know what you mean here? If you ask U2 I'm sure they are quite proud of it, I think its their best since AB. Also, I don't care if the last 3 albums haven't been AB or JT either. Over the past 3 albums I got: Beautiful Day, Kite, Walk On, Vertigo, SYCMIOYO, City of Blinding Lights, Original of the Species, No Line on the Horizon, Magnificent, Moment of Surrender, White as Snow , and Cedars of Lebanon. More than I could have hoped
I saw this in Charlottesville, VA and it gave me chills. Absolutely epic. Bono's so emotional when he's rapping at the end, I think he actually gets choked up. I wonder what he's thinking about.
This is some of Edge's best guitar work since Love is Blindness.

@spritc Geez!!! What are you smoking?? In Kite Bono talks about "hip hop driving the big cars" and "Opera singers".
The ATM machine is used as a metaphor if you know anything about poetry.
This song is a dead serious song with a very serious, deep and mystical meaning to the lyrics. It is the best song ever since U2 did "One" in 1991.
The chorus is just amazing with a choir feel.
The melody is haunting and the lyrics are poetry in motion.

It is true that this song is about surrendering to heroin addiction, but the end part is surely a reference to his wife Ali..( when he first met her her face was like snow, wherever he went she wanted to go, her face her grace her lipstick trace, age 17 on the ground(age he met her at school) her faith in a clown, don't leave me now don't leave me now....if you notice, Bono always finds little ways to speak to Ali in almost every song...true love is alive
gigiall4me 11 months ago
@gigiall4me Actually, by Bono's account, she was 12 when they met. They didn't start dating till she was a couple years older, though. But you're right- he ALWAYS talks to her. Awww....

MOMENT OF SURRENDER, OF VISION OVER VISIBILITY...

Thanks for the music.

what did he say at the end? i just understand "life is short bur it´s the longest thing you`ll ever do" can somebody tell me the whole thing? Thanks!!!
Skatdriver 1 year ago 2
@Skatdriver Here is what I think he says - "Life is short but it's the longest thing you'll ever do, the worst the curse was that your dreams came true, God is a mirror in which each man sees himself, Hell is a place where you don't need any help. When I first met you your face was like snow, wherever I went you wanted to go, your face your grace your lipstick trace your case as you put it down, 8:17 on the ground, your faith in a clown, don't leave me now..."

@u2opia100 Everything right, except that it is A-17, not 8
EdwardJamesCastSly 10 months ago
@u2opia100 Could it be "A17 (British airplane) on the ground" ? and "your faith in a crown" ?
mcompagnoni 6 months ago
@mcompagnoni here it sounds more like 8:17, but it could be A17 on the ground, i'm not sure...
u2opia100 5 months ago
@u2opia100 in the bible, Moises 8:17
it could be what Bono means
BryanSlashed 5 months ago
@Skatdriver All is correct up to the end. He says A17 on the ground. Refers to crashing off heroin. The character Bono sings about here is an addict, "Tied me a wire to let the horses run free" is a direct clue to that. A17 was an experimental military aircraft, not much evidence on that though as it was top secret, and yes one did supposedly crash years ago. The character he's sing about is crying out for help, "Don't leave me now."

@Skatdriver
It's either a flight number, or "Age 17, on the ground".

This is U2 at or very near their best.
vettehottie 1 year ago
@vettehottie spirit? soul? Yeah? I think you've missed the entire point.

Let me know if i'm well off!
lostregone 1 year ago
@lostregone You are spot on. A17 on the ground at the end refers to crashing. All of it apparently cause the person he was writing about, which I also heard is the same referred to in "Unknown Caller" to loose connection with his girlfriend or wife. Some say this could refer to Bono's past, but who knows? "I did not notice the passer by's and they did not notice me" is probably a reference to people who are high do not really notice things going on around them.
NikonFstopper 1 year ago
@NikonFstopper Actually Bono made up little stories about characters, a traffic cop, a junkie and a dying soldier in Afghanistan.

@drvertigo U just right ;-)

Actually, I'm not a big fan of the last 3, and that bums me out :(
skrason 1 year ago
