I shiver whenever I see one of these soul destroying cars still on the road. They were so bad. My dad only bought one because it was still unBrittish at that time to buy a foreign car. We went on a Eurocamp trip in the 80's and it broke down in six different European countries. I'm generally left-wing in my views but these cars made me realise how atrocious the unions of the 70s were to British manufacturing. Horrible plastic stuck on badly, rust, damage and bits that fell off. Good riddance
Great cars. Spacious, really comfy, good driving position too. As for rust? Well so did Fiats, Lancias, Renaults - even late 70's/early to mid 80's Audis rusted! Nothing new really.
Had a Maestro that sat in my driveway untouched for 2 years rusting away, stuck in a car battery and it started on the second attempt, Car seats all mouldy got £50 for it.
Problem with these cars was that it took to long to get them into production initial design proposals dated from the mid seventies, add to that the criminal build quality in particular the corrosion proection or lack off it! for vehicle built in the eighties it was nohing short of scandalous, good riddance to another longbridge piece of dog shit
im 37 now and i guarantee that these cars were absolute rot boxes lol...id have a maestro turbo only because its a collectors iten otherwise good riddnce to austin/rover wat a load of shite the produced...
@Brimstoneandfire i know but at least they were on about the car not like todays car ads they got nothing to do with the car like the crap bmw tv ad what the hell has a coffee got to do with a car

The Maestro MG turbo was a quick car indeed. Also quick for it, was its ability to rust.
In the day, I thought the Montego was a good car. However, there aren't many of either cars left.

I'd actually like to own a Maestro or a Montego, just because they are different.

I found the 1.3s a wee bit underpowered. 1.6 far better, plus if you stayed on top of the rust they were good for 200,000 miles
