xbox 360 dvd drive clunking noise

sort of a relief. i bought a xbox on craiglist and it did that when it loads the disk and stuff. i can hear over the t.v though.its like its trying to tell me something.

Alright, here's my adventure.

For a while now, my friend's Xbox 360 was gradually losing it's ability to recognize discs that it had previously loaded successfully. Once it could read no more discs we decided it was time to open it up and try and see if a good cleaning could help. Opened the Xbox> Separately Cleaned all moving parts associated with disc movement (worm, spindle motors) the Xbox would still clunk and not read. We decided on a pot tweak. Works perfectly now. Hope this helps you

I have two drives I'm selling just mount your circuit board with the firmware matching, screws right into any MECHANICAL drive you buy. Keep in mind, they do sell plenty of them on eBay as well as Craigslist

@foelde its not because his drive is open, ive got the same problem, you can hear it over the tv, its so annoying. mine still reads the discs so i could install them to the hard drive and play them off there but its way too much hassle

@jpollorena I have 3 xboxes. One Original, and 2 360s. They all make this noise. Especially the original. The new 360 slim I bought make it over and over and over again when theres a demo cd in it. Since all of mine make that noise all the time, I dont think there is anything wrong with them, and I think that is how they just read the disk. mAt first I was concerned, but now I am not at all. So if you ask me, I don't think u shuld send it in.

All consoles make "clunking" noises. It's the disc being read. Especially with two layers, it makes noise when the laser needs to get information from the disc. It's normal for all consoles.

Yes, it's normal. All of the gaming systems do it. That's why the Xbox 360 is loud. It has to spin really fast for the lazer to read it. It also has a faster transfer rate than the PS3 because of that.

yup it does scratch ur game when the lens is too close to the disc. it happened to my left 4 dead. u should probably buy a hard drive and download your game(s) to it. that way, the game wont have to spin in order for u to play it.

It's been fixed with the new consoles. There is more support above and below the lazer track so it doesn't vibrate and bounce anymore. The only way it could scratch is if you move the console, which Microsoft clearly states not to do.

Mine does this as well. Brand new Xbox 360, about 4 days old now. I am wondering if I should take it back to the shop? It does this constantly throughout Bioshock, can't be normal, shouldn't have to skip around like that should it?

Also I noticed that there is a very faint circular scratch on each of my disks. Must mean the laser is out of allignment or something right? Games are still playable, but I don't want my Xbox scratching all my dam discs. Games aren't cheap!

well have you moved your Xbox360 at all while a disk is in it and/or moving? because moving it with disk inside does that. the disk is pretty much floating so if you tip it it goes off balance and hits off the lazer eye. and not only does it ruin disks it fuck up the eye so it can read disks
