@li7in6 Uh no the comanche program was halted because they coould not profect the stealthy roater blades, so thats were the humming bird stealth UAV heli comes into play they have used that as a testing platform (look at the shape style and movement of both the comanche and the humming bird) and the comanche is not going to the army from what I understand the marines are giving/trading there appaches for the comandche one at a time over a period of several years.
@xXSaber32Xx The Commanche program was cancelled because it offered no increased capability over the army's fleet of 64D's and kiowa's. The Army needed the money being used for the Commanche program to purchase more 64D's and finish upgrading its existing 64A's to 64D kit. The Commanche is COMPLETELY cancelled, it will never exist in active duty. The Marines do not even fly the Apache, they fly the AH-1W Cobra which they are in the process of upgrading to AH-1Z Viper specs, NOT the Commanche.
Two different mission profiles. Not quite comparable, but if you're talking point target attacks (such as anti tank) I'd have to go with the D model Apache. It can track 200+ targets at once and then launch up to 16 hellfires in rapid succession. All this from the other side of a hill with very short unmasking times. The A-10 is awesome! But it actually has to roll in on targets and can only attack one point target at a time. of course a slow jet (A-10) is way faster than any helicopter.

Wait till the radar guided 2.75" rockets come on line. Up to 76 soft targets could be engaged as fast as one can pull the trigger. Then of course Apaches usually fly in teams of 6 so that's 456 targets with 256 at any one time.
The enemy won't care if your Apache is better. They will just care about how fast they can run (not drive, because all their vehicles would be destroyed) away from the fight.
@orlock20 Thre will be no radar guided FFAR's as radar array is too large to mount in such a small platform. What is being developed is a laser seeker guided FFAR that will home in on to a painted (by the 64's rangefinder/targeting laser) target in a similar way to the AGM-114A-K. Essentially this SAL FFAR will be a smaller, less deadly equivalent to the Russian 9k121 Vikhr. But it will be able to be deployed in much larger numbers.
@li7in6 the APKWS II can have a radar system attached to it. It's been done by Raytheon, but I can't do links on youtube. The 2.75" doesn't have to have it's own radar, it just uses the data from the longbow for adjustments. It was originally suppose to be laser guided. There is also the laser guided DAGR by Lockheed Martin.
@orlock20 Both the Ratheon and L-M guided FFAR programs are based on a semi-active 'laser riding' model similar to that of the Russian Vikhr. The longbow radar is used for target acquisition for the aircraft but that does not make the munition radar guided. It still relies on the 64D's laser to paint the target, then the minition's own laser seeker homes in on said painted target.
@li7in6, there was an engineer/management struggle with the APKWS II. Management won. The engineers were able to make the APKWS II radar guided, but management wanted it to be laser guided. I don't keep up with all the new happenings and my last interest was when the engineers developed a radar guided version. It seems a lot has happened with the program since then.
@jgtheman84, the rockets are fitted with a device much like a laser guided device that fits on dumb bombs. They have existed for a few years although they are an export iteam as congress hasn't funded them for the U.S. military. The U.S. also doesn't have a laser guided tank round or mortar both of which are used by other countries.
@orlock20 yeah but i think the hellfire missiles do a hell of a lot more damage than the 2.75" rockets. hell i think even the 30mm HE rounds do more dmg than the rockets. what exactly arethe rockets for anyways? is it for the collateral damage issue where they dont want to do too much damage to the target? lol
@jgtheman84, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, hellfires wer used against infantry and other soft targets. Hellfires are poor anti-infantry weapons since they are shape charged which work against hardened targets where the armor can be used as shrapnel. Rockets make better anti-infantry weapons and are much cheaper than hellfires. The difference is a $500,000 weapon that may kill infantry and a less than $10,000 rocket that would probably kill infantry and destroy any civilian vehicle.
@orlock20 yes but what can the rockets do that the 30mm High Explosive can't? 30mm HE can pierce armor and explode doing massive damage and it can fired limitlessly. Only purpose i could think think of is that the 30mm is inaccurate past a certain range where as the rockets are self propelled and can carry themselves a lot further. The 30mm is the perfect anti-infantry/light armor weapon. I dont quite understand the purpose of the rockets when you can use 30mm instead.
@jgtheman84, you can pass off targets with laser guided weapons. A guy on the ground can aim, the Apache fires and the guy on the ground tells the weapon where to go. Also laser guided weapons can follow moving targets and the 30 mm rounds just go "straight." Also the rockets do more damage quicker. One can take out three APCs faster with guided rockets than with the 30 mm.
@orlock20 yeah but the 2.75" rockets that the Apache is currently using are UNGUIDED meaning they just shoot in a straight line. I can understand the use of guided rockets because thats a totally different concept but even then, i still think you would be better off carrying 16 hellfire missiles because they do so much more destruction.
@jgtheman84, hellfires are expensive and they are shape charged meaning they don't carry extra shrapnel to kill infantry. The laser guided rocket was suppose to be a cheaper alternative. Also the Apache can carry more rockets than it can hellfires, 76 rockets compared with 16 hellfires.
@jgtheman84, they exist, it's just that somebody has to buy them. The U.S. is not the only country that has the Apache helicopter and the Brits have already modified the Apache.
The U.S. doesn't have all the weapon technology out there. The U.S. doesn't have laser guided mortar rounds or laser guided rockets fired from tanks. The U.S. also doesn't have anything like the K-11 rifle used by the South Koreans. It's possible other countries would use them instead of buying hell

@xXSaber32Xx The comanche program was cancelled in 2004. The Army will never field any RAH-66's. The AH-64D is the Army premier attach helo for the foreseeable future and the OH-58 is the Army's sole reconnaissance chopper for the foreseeable future.

@li7in6 Uh no the comanche program was halted because they coould not profect the stealthy roater blades, so thats were the humming bird stealth UAV heli comes into play they have used that as a testing platform (look at the shape style and movement of both the comanche and the humming bird) and the comanche is not going to the army from what I understand the marines are giving/trading there appaches for the comandche one at a time over a period of several years.

@xXSaber32Xx The Commanche program was cancelled because it offered no increased capability over the army's fleet of 64D's and kiowa's. The Army needed the money being used for the Commanche program to purchase more 64D's and finish upgrading its existing 64A's to 64D kit. The Commanche is COMPLETELY cancelled, it will never exist in active duty. The Marines do not even fly the Apache, they fly the AH-1W Cobra which they are in the process of upgrading to AH-1Z Viper specs, NOT the Commanche.

Two different mission profiles. Not quite comparable, but if you're talking point target attacks (such as anti tank) I'd have to go with the D model Apache. It can track 200+ targets at once and then launch up to 16 hellfires in rapid succession. All this from the other side of a hill with very short unmasking times. The A-10 is awesome! But it actually has to roll in on targets and can only attack one point target at a time. of course a slow jet (A-10) is way faster than any helicopter.

Wait till the radar guided 2.75" rockets come on line. Up to 76 soft targets could be engaged as fast as one can pull the trigger. Then of course Apaches usually fly in teams of 6 so that's 456 targets with 256 at any one time.
The enemy won't care if your Apache is better. They will just care about how fast they can run (not drive, because all their vehicles would be destroyed) away from the fight.

@orlock20 Thre will be no radar guided FFAR's as radar array is too large to mount in such a small platform. What is being developed is a laser seeker guided FFAR that will home in on to a painted (by the 64's rangefinder/targeting laser) target in a similar way to the AGM-114A-K. Essentially this SAL FFAR will be a smaller, less deadly equivalent to the Russian 9k121 Vikhr. But it will be able to be deployed in much larger numbers.

@li7in6 the APKWS II can have a radar system attached to it. It's been done by Raytheon, but I can't do links on youtube. The 2.75" doesn't have to have it's own radar, it just uses the data from the longbow for adjustments. It was originally suppose to be laser guided. There is also the laser guided DAGR by Lockheed Martin.

@orlock20 Both the Ratheon and L-M guided FFAR programs are based on a semi-active 'laser riding' model similar to that of the Russian Vikhr. The longbow radar is used for target acquisition for the aircraft but that does not make the munition radar guided. It still relies on the 64D's laser to paint the target, then the minition's own laser seeker homes in on said painted target.

@li7in6, there was an engineer/management struggle with the APKWS II. Management won. The engineers were able to make the APKWS II radar guided, but management wanted it to be laser guided. I don't keep up with all the new happenings and my last interest was when the engineers developed a radar guided version. It seems a lot has happened with the program since then.

@jgtheman84, the rockets are fitted with a device much like a laser guided device that fits on dumb bombs. They have existed for a few years although they are an export iteam as congress hasn't funded them for the U.S. military. The U.S. also doesn't have a laser guided tank round or mortar both of which are used by other countries.

@jgtheman84, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, hellfires wer used against infantry and other soft targets. Hellfires are poor anti-infantry weapons since they are shape charged which work against hardened targets where the armor can be used as shrapnel. Rockets make better anti-infantry weapons and are much cheaper than hellfires. The difference is a $500,000 weapon that may kill infantry and a less than $10,000 rocket that would probably kill infantry and destroy any civilian vehicle.

@orlock20 yes but what can the rockets do that the 30mm High Explosive can't? 30mm HE can pierce armor and explode doing massive damage and it can fired limitlessly. Only purpose i could think think of is that the 30mm is inaccurate past a certain range where as the rockets are self propelled and can carry themselves a lot further. The 30mm is the perfect anti-infantry/light armor weapon. I dont quite understand the purpose of the rockets when you can use 30mm instead.

@jgtheman84, you can pass off targets with laser guided weapons. A guy on the ground can aim, the Apache fires and the guy on the ground tells the weapon where to go. Also laser guided weapons can follow moving targets and the 30 mm rounds just go "straight." Also the rockets do more damage quicker. One can take out three APCs faster with guided rockets than with the 30 mm.

I can understand the use of guided rockets because thats a totally different concept but even then, i still think you would be better off carrying 16 hellfire missiles because they do so much more destruction.

@jgtheman84, they exist, it's just that somebody has to buy them. The U.S. is not the only country that has the Apache helicopter and the Brits have already modified the Apache.
The U.S. doesn't have all the weapon technology out there. The U.S. doesn't have laser guided mortar rounds or laser guided rockets fired from tanks. The U.S. also doesn't have anything like the K-11 rifle used by the South Koreans. It's possible other countries would use them instead of buying hell
