Unfortunately, Hawaii Volcano National Park Policies, as well as rules from the DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) discourage, if not forbid, visiting volcanic displays. Lava can bee seen on most days, but you might have to work to get to it. Some of my hikes have been over 8 hours in one direction, and I've crossed a few ropes and warning signs to see molten rock. Hiking at night is the best, and if you go to Pu'u O'o, be off the cone by 7am - to avoid the tour helicopters!
