@Amtrak1194 The bulk of it is 3'6". The high speed is all standard gauge. There are numerous railway companies in Japan and quite a variety of gauges in use. As a for instance the Sangi RR runs electric EMU trains on one line on 2'6".
I suppose one needs to be "into" the rail thing, but I found this more than a little interesting (the above-average cam work helped, as well as my unfamiliarity with Japanese rail beyond the obvious Bullet Train stuff). Double points for whoever withstood the snowy cold to shot this. (Ask me why I know how hard this is...)
@NattapatZ Depends entirely on which country you are in. The fastest that I have seen in Japan on the 3'6" is 130km/h. The new Keisei airport link to Narita will be 160km/h and of course the shinkansens are up to 300km/h. I would suggest that most developed countries are running at least 160km/h on main routes these days.
@Rocketboy1950 Well, i was in Japan for several months, most JRs and Hankyus in Kansai area doesn't go above 115 km/h. I do know that the maximum speed varies in different areas, but i've just never seen a "standard" commercial train going above 115 km/h in Japan before.
Yep, in my country (Thailand), we are still using the old school diesel-locos for hauling coachs :(
@Rocketboy1950 Here in the Netherlands they are planning to do 160 km/h on main routes, but to my opinion the railnetwork of my country is just too dense for that.
They are talking about it for a long time already, but PT-business takes a very long time in most cases: always costs more than the initial budget, and the time a project had to be finished is always delayed by about 40 to 100 % of the initial time ;)
Only in response to idiots and the idiot has removed his comments so you didn't see what I was responding to. I can be equally nice but I have a very low tolerance for stupid people making offensive comments.
they're express trains... they're not stopping because they don't stop at this particular station...express trains in japan skip stations in order to arrive at others faster. Why don't you read the description of the video before you judge. Dumbass.......
It never fails to amaze me that the intelligentsia manage to make such eloquent observations on other peoples work and yet appear to lack either the initiative or know how to make and post a video themselves.
Whilst they may have the appearance of an old style US switcher these are main line locos. Most Japanese diesel locos have that shape. They are of course also used for switching work.. Have a look at some of the clips by go2batayan , you will see these on freight work in Hokkaido
Are you serious, dude? Sapporo is known for getting lots of snow. I mean...I'm from Toronto and I thought we already get lots of snow...turns out we average 130cm a year while the mighty Sapporo gets somewhere around 600cm.
isn't the track gauge in Japan 3 ft 6 inches?

From my understanding most commercial trains have a speed limit of 115 km/h right?

Two months or more would go by in my area to see soo many trains, and they would not be passengers anyways.
Way better than stupid cars. I would not waste time watching videos about them.
Most train shown here are electrics powered?
Snow plowers are sure busy with each passing train bringing them more work....:)
Thank you for this movie.

They actually come at irregular intervals. Two minute intervals are few and far between. Mostly three or four.
