  • In any ways, my favorite piano piece is the beginning of this song (for rock and such) because it is so hard and so dang good!

  • simply magic!

  • THAT SHITTY GUITAR PLAYER DARYL STUERMER DIDNT FUCK THIS ONE UP!!!!

  • The part from 3:08 to 8:20... I can't stop listening to it... it is.. so...

  • Very awesome track.

  • hackett's solo comes from another dimension...

  • je n'ai que 14 ans et je suis fan de Genesis !

  • It seems the piano part in the beginning is played in a bar where nobody takes notice and after the sirens mezmerizing cry(peter flute) sends sailors to starve to death at sea(steves guitar) at the end the old man is still playing the piano to an empty bar. Sad song innocent people died in a sea that wasn't there

  • cheers is filmed before a live studio audience

  • la melodía se dirige hacia donde tu la quieras llevar y esta canción en especial te lleva a volar

  • One of the best. Just marvellous.

  • Most important song in my teenage

  • @Aonios did you know teenagers did not exsist 100 years ago?

  • the original is absolutely superb...cover versions suck.

  • llamallamallamaduck!

  • is the remastered version? very nice, however. :)

  • MAGNIFICENT

  • Genesis was first. And then.........the Firth of fifth.

  • I am a 6 weeks old unborn foetus and i love it

  • abacab

  • @jensen91865

Abacab days not so good...Selling, Lamb, Nursery etc RULES!

  • FUCK THE 49 RETARDS THAT DONT LIKE THIS!! GO LISTEN TO YOYR PHIL COLLINS SHIT!!

  • lol I am sweet charming

  • Fantastic music. One of my favourits-brilliant drummer

  • rousing stuff.... and so with gods and men the sheep remain inside their pen .... love it!

  • This is definitely my favorite song.Obviously my user name states that. Incredible Prog elements and sections showing all of the band's melodic virtuosity and musicianship. This is probably the greatest song Tony Banks ever wrote. Phil's drums incredible. Mike's baselines' supreme. Peter's singing and flute hypnotic. Steve's guitar solo spectacular and Tony's Piano, organ, and keys beautiful. Genesis ( mostly Gabriel era ), followed by Yes and Pink Floyd are in my opinion the greatest bands ever.

  • @psfirthoffith Omg, if your a girl I would marry you right now, because I just met my equal.

  • How great is that solo?

  • I just turned my 13 yr old son onto Genesis-he loves it:-) i think Firth of Fifth is my alltime fave Genesis song

  • good music is for all ages at fifteen i think that i am the only one my age that actually apreciates this stuff anymore...

  • @Aar0nXZX Im 15 too :D I love it!

  • Ah I guess The Cinema Show is the best one now thinking about it. The Cinema Show gets my vote for the greatest Genesis song.

  • The only thing people ever talk about on here is "Phil replaced Peter! They stopped making prog music! Boo hoo!".

    ¬_¬

  • Goosebumps each and every time. Sheer genius !! I loved this track as long as I can remember and I won't get tired of it in the decades to come.

  • One of the best track of history!!

  • holy sh* beautyfull song, it's the first time that i listen to this o.o

  • Steve Hackett great solo guitar one of the best 70's progressive albums

  • 6:00 start the extasis!!!

  • it's funny how the first google suggestions for this song's title aren't lyrics or dowloads, but tabs and piano sheets

  • okay who else plays air paino when this starts? =P

  • Thanks fate for introducing me to this

  • It makes me happy to see this song has over a million views. I thought I was one of few whose dad showed me the amazing Genesis.

  • Please, Someone tell Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and Kate Perry to get cultivated hearing and trying to appreciate this because this music is a missile for their abilities, they will be finished!!!

  • @juanunderground Hence why they never last long...and we're still listening to brilliance such as this!

  • @juanunderground Is it possible for me to come to a music video and not hear about Justin Bieber? Just for once? Is it too much to ask?

  • Comment removed

  • @SKAtarina420 This is a free speech. But, don't get mad and angry. First, Let's pay attention to the virtuosity of TonyBanks, the great solo of mogg when the song goes crescendo. The magic that Peter Gabriel had in this time screening his irreverent way of singing. The unique sound of SteveHackett in his guitar that revolutionized the concept of pedal volume, and the technique of PhilCollins enhancing beats in suddenly changes in drums. Glad?

  • @juanunderground Thank you.

  • @juanunderground The combined talent of Justin, Miley, and Katy wouldn't even come close to the talent of any one single member of Genesis, past or present.

  • Favourite song of all time.. you wouldn't have guessed it as I like bands like Incubus, The Devil Wears Prada, Foo Fighters, Death Stars, Rammstein... but on the the other hand, I was brought up with amazing bands like these! Pink Floyd, Aphrodite's Child, King Crimson, Rush... just like Genesis, they are all so influential and revolutionary!

  • The best guitar solo ever! Starts at 5:55

  • @jounimika If you like this, check out Rush in Rio - La villa Strangiato! When it gets the 2:35 and the guitar solo comes in! Amazing....

  • @DarkLionInteractive No, it's all Genesis, you retard. Fucking hell, one members leaves and the band name changes?

  • @ToxicTurquoise454 You had to go and call me a retard? Ok, dumbass, first of all, if you don't understand a comment, don't fucking comment on it. What I was saying is that once Phil came along, the band's style changed from progressive rock to a more mainstream kind of music (also great). And FOR ME (I believe I have stressed that enough in my comment), the name Genesis speaks of that progressive style they had before, while their newer work has Phil's name all over. Fucktard.

  • remembering my childhood <3<3

  • well!!! I am new to this band... and after listening to a few songs... all I can say is... I FUCKEN GIVE UP!!!! there's no end to beautiful music... Brilliant is all I have to say... :)

  • learning this song on piano... total new mad respect for Mr. Tony Banks!!

  • It's a shame more people don't know about this great song, so many people back away as soon as they hear "Genesis" because they instantly think of the average pop-songs they did later on; this is definitely one of my favourite prog songs.

  • a masterpiece in xx century music...

  • quante canne... firth of fifth, cinema show e le cuffie..

  • @sakurambo76 bella!

  • Brilliant music, period.

  • wonderful lirics

  • In quanti abbiamo sognato con questi capolavoro di Musica?

  • Peter's doubled vocals are just plain sublime.

Tony, a virtuoso by any standard.

Mike's consummate (and underrated) bass work.

Steve's majestic sweeping fluid guitar, particularly at ----

Phil, what can we say? The ritards in the piece prove that no metronome was used.

  • On rate my music.com, I am going to make a list of The 100 Greatest Artists of all time voted by the people. If you want to vote, comment back at me telling me your top 5 choices. Every artist must have released their debut album before 1992 (20 years ago) to make it in the list. Voting ends on March 15th.

  • I love the flute solo at 3:33, but the whole song is a masterpiece!

  • HAha Sorry but besides Neal Peart...Phil Collins is one of the BEST!! He's the singer and drummer in this song WOW people way to put a foot in your mouth! Grow a brain cell :)

  • @myescape21 Peter Gabriel is singing this song, not Phil... He's still an underrated drummer though!

  • Thanks dad for introducing me to this

  • @TheOrlannn Couldn't agree more c:

  • @TheOrlannn My dad introduced me to this too, but he also introduced me to pink floyd and AC/DC. Thanks.

  • @TheOrlannn

My dad has awesome taste in music too, I've been listening to these since I was about 3!

  • @ChrisN3992 When I was 3 I listened to cannibal corpse.

  • @CatterpillerStoner Cannibal crap. Death metal is not music.

  • @ChocolateHoneycomb Death, the band, is much more musical than later death metal bands.

  • There are 46 fools who listened to it. How really can one dislike it?!

  • hmz nothing is too crazy

  • Inimitabili...irragiungibili....

  • what happened to music like this?

  • Our band vote to do the Firth of Fifth solo, but our drummer says it sucks, it's so boring... what do you say about that?

  • @BandaSpreadRock kick your drummer in the balls, then tell him that was boring...lol

  • @BandaSpreadRock tell to your drummer that in the future this song will be considered an opera like ones of Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Puccini etc. etc.

  • @BandaSpreadRock Your drummer sucks and needs to be kicked out. He probably listens to Ratt on the weekends.

  • @BandaSpreadRock Is this boring? Tell your drummer the intro is in a 13/16 time!! Ask him if he can do this at the drums!

  • @BandaSpreadRock il tuo batterista è un gran coglione! ecco.. così hai un parere da un italiano :)

  • Worst ive heard ^^

  • This is going to be my funeral song,I`ll be +100 yrs

  • Sheer and Utter CLASS.

  • @lucertola17 Impressioni di settembre *_*

  • seriously though, who searches up "Genesis - Firth of Fifth" just to dislike it? I don't even like it but why would any one come here to dislike it?

  • @Inderption

I'm pretty damn sure they didn't make the effort willy nilly to come here and dislike it, they either were suggested it and thought it was bad, or happened upon it from the suggestion bar. It's pretty obvious dude.

  • Capolavoro di canzone! Una delle piú belle a mio parare!! Grandi..memorabili direi!!

  • Thank you for posting this! Made my night. Now I have to go out and get the darn album again!

  • I will follow you, will you follow me, all the days and nights that we know will be, I will stay with you, will you stay with me, just one single tear in each passing year...

  • ;0)

  • Fucking awesome!

  • This is real music.

  • I like Selling England by the Pound more than The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. But there are only a few people who share my opinion.

  • @oldrichflorian It's hard to pick the best Genesis album, they are all amazing. If i had to chose one, has to be Lamb ...yeah i'm one of those people ....but only i chose it, by a hair.

  • Prog rock classic!

  • This song was written entirely by Tony Banks. Or, almost entirely; the guitar solo grew out of a jam on the part that Banks had written for the flute.

  • @vinvanveen CD says all songs written collectively by Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Collins, and Hackett, but who knows? Most Doors records say written by The Doors, but that was an agreement between them to get equally compensated, as most of their songs were written by Morrison and Krieger

  • @MrRetiredOfficer You're right that it's credited to the entire band, but in this case, Banks (and some of the others) have mentioned in interviews that it's almost completely written by Banks. For instance, it's mentioned in the interview on the 2007 reissue disk, and also on the "Genesis songbook" DVD.

  • Prog rock at its best!

  • sure i saw asasquatch, guvnah

teat s'more, you socialist world will come to order and coalesce. bite mein fetish.

    syncopation! how did you know!

syncopation doesn't offer jobs in this Obama landscape so i may just go invade kenya, for what reason? ha

    silly people

  • wrong son, and agin we go bak to the begining of again like a three toed land sloth donosaur ripples wake

awaen awoken hath spoken thus soft underbelly more sir?

  • unbelievable.

  • Fucking perfect stuff right here

  • is song is such a badass motherfucker!!!! lol

  • @elekdube So, translating this comment into English, can I take it that you rather like this tune?

  • Selling England is One of the Greatest albums ever recorded by ANY band ever - in all time !! It's the best of the Gabriel era - Lamb is awesome ,...but this whole album is magnificent -

  • This and Dancing With the Moonlit Knight are my two ultimate favorites by Genesis!!!

  • I cannot understand the people who like Justin after listen this...

  • best solo ever :-)

  • how can people dislike this masterpiece ?. . .????

  • (cont) his ex bandmates music. It's kind of telling that the very next thing that Pete put out after 'So' was the least accessible or commercial thing he'd ever done with or without Genesis.'Passion' soundtrack to 'The Last Temptation of Christ' A very highly regarded work that I believe won a grammy.I think Pete unlike Phil and co was wise enough to realize early the dangers of going too far in the "pop" direction. And all the music he's done since 'So' has not been in that vein.

  • I think the reason why Peter doesn't get accused of selling out like Phil and 80's Genesis is because when you think about it,it was really only that ONE album (So) where Pete went pop.Whereas the case with Genesis and Phil solo that pretty much became their modus operandi throughout the eighties and nineties. Most of the music that Pete made before 'So' while more accessible than his days in Genesis, still retained and edge as well as a penchant for experimentation that was mostly missing from

  • both phil and peter can shut up about their failed marriages, the jokes is on phil and peter, need a hit, time to break up with the wife.

  • All members are outstanding. Just try and match it you critics you!

  • Lets all shut up about whether the Collins era sucked or not,

And just BASK IN THE PURE AMAZINGNESS OF TONY BANKS. <3

    'Nuff said.

  • This song just proves the Peter Gabriel era Genesis is so much better than the Genesis when Phil Collins came out from behind the drum kit and took over lead vocals. They are both talented in their own right; but the theatrical, showmanship, and melodic structures in Peter's era were unbeatable. Also, this is not a Peter vs. Phil thing here. You must not forget the utmost contributions of Tony,Mike, and of course Mr. Steve Hackett. Also Ant,C.Stewart,J. Mayhew,J.Silver and later Chester and Darryl

  • The best drummer:

    1)Keith Moon (The Who)

    2)John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)

    3)Phil Collins (Genesis)

  • @poiuytrewq470 Bill Bruford ( Yes ) and Mitch Mitchell ( Jimi Hendrix Experience ) would round out the top Five. I hope you are in agreement.

  • Guys, stop bashing LeftiesWillRule. xD Everybody has their opinion on the Genesis era, [I happen to agree that Phil kinda ruined Genesis after Peter left. Tony totally should've taken over.] But just hush and listen to the piano solo. THE PIANO SOLO, GUYS. Just hush already and listen to it.

    Adhfgbheuwsdf Tony Banks <3

  • @RachelThePixie FAIL. Collins Era.

  • This will be my funeral dirge. Take note.

  • Their stuff with P. Gabriel is there best by far.

  • Who the FUCK can dislike this???!!!

  • @Jellevlogs some human who dosnt enjoy our type of songs:)

  • @Jellevlogs I know, that's insane.... This is one of my favorite pieces of music ever written. I don't know how anyone can even listen to music and not appreciate this song.

  • @Jellevlogs only 43 mad idiots

  • I love how phideaux take the influence of this song (part 4:11 - 4:50) and then apply it in one of the main melodies of his masterpiece Doomsday Afternoon.

  • @HombreAproximativo hmm i never noticed that, has anyone in that band ever said that it was a direct influence from this song or anything? cuz i only kind of hear it. Doomsday Afternoon is a great album though

  • @o0LanternLight0o No, not in this song, I think (It's only my supposition) , but Phideaux always says that early Genesis is one of his favourite bands, and he says that he started into prog rock listening Genesis too, if you read the interview on the official webpage he says this kind of thing. In my opinion, the part I've marked on the previous post has influence on one of the "constant melodies" through the album (i think in candybrain you can hear the part i'm referring) sorry for my english.

  • @HombreAproximativo oh ok, and your english is just fine, i had no problem understanding you

  • @o0LanternLight0o here, after the release of doomsday afternoon he says it too: dlsi.ua.es/~inesta/LCDM/Entrevistas/phideaux_may08.html

  • Aún con 16,diserté 2 Hrs,con un pequeño Pick up,nada como los duetos barrocos de Gabriel y Collins,por no decir S. Haked,T. Bancs,M. Rutheford................Simplemente GENESIS

  • from selling Europe by the euro

  • ho my good wowwwwwwwwwwwww

  • intro degno del miglior rubinstein..straordinerio

  • So, you guys might disagree, but my favorite part of this song is probably from 0:00 to 9:34.

  • @TheOneEyedHound Nicely put Mr Hound. Shame we 1.3 million listeners with incredibly good taste can't find out who the dislikers are so we can constantly take the piss out of them. It really makes me wonder about what they do like!

  • @frankjurga new genesis

  • @frankjurga Thank you for agreeing. And that's Miss Hound, bud. :)

  • @TheOneEyedHound I had a funny feeling in my bones that if I put Mr it would bring about a response. I couldn't figure how to put in a respectful title when I didn't know the gender - 'It' was all I could think of but that would have produced an entirely different response. Anyway, absolutely delighted to learn that a lovely lady adores 70s prog like what I do.

  • @TheOneEyedHound Hi again Miss Hound - I wonder why your last comment got zapped? My 2 fave tracks of all time are Carpet Crawlers by Genesis and I'll be Waiting by Santana - to me they are perfectly constructed, produced and executed songs. Fancy sending me a list of your fave 10/20 songs that never charted in a big way. Here's a taste of mine - Watching and Waiting by The Moody Blues, White Bird by It's a Beautiful Day, Onward by Yes, Got to get back to you by Ashton Gardner & Dyke

  • @frankjurga I'm gonna stop commenting on here; I feel like I'm spamming up the comment box of this breathtaking, mind-blowing song.

    I'll send over a message (:
