Just saw Danielle de Niese in "The Enchanged Island" and she totally rocks. She is amazing and brought the house down with her fioratura work. She is, as mentioned, a wonderful actress and definitely hot. She also has a wonderful voice. Loved her! She had to keep up with Joyce di Donato and that is no easy feat, given that Joyce is simply perfection. I'm so glad to be alive now!!!
C'est trop mou pas de passion (pour ma part) j'ai tant eu de plaisir à écouter Simone Kermes dans cet air magnifique, c'est à peine si c'est le même air!!!
Tatiana Troyanos version is my favorite version of this aria, and second choice is Magdalena Kozena. Bayo and Sills are performing well but with less drama.
@Monteverdiforever I was not aware that Natalie Dessay recorded this song, but I have been listening on youtube. Natalie and Haim and Baroque music is a perfect match. Troyanos and Kozena are still my favorite version for this aria.
@90lysander Agreed. It needs a soft lilting voice which floats above the period orchestra. My favourite version which is on u-tube is by Maria Bayo as performed at the BBC Proms in 1996. Even the great Cecelia Bartoli cannot do this justice. She does ,however, have the excuse of being a mezzo rather than a soprano.
@peter92305 I haven't seen that rendition by Bayo; I'll have to check it out. Sills is my ultimate favorite in this role -- but she, of course, doesn't have the period orchestra accompanying her that you so strongly desire. Among modern Cleopatras, I think Inger Dam-Jennsen (spelling?) is pretty good.
I have never heard so many false notes or lack of stylistic treatment in such exposed music.
There are no words for Ms. de Niese.

Rather disappointing. This is one of the most beautiful arias EVER, and de Niese's rendition doesn't really cut it.
