I've had my share of girlfriends and they've all been blondes, but my most ardent secret love was always Annette. She had it all. Cute, talented, classy, and sexy in her own sophisticated way. So sad to see her unlucky fate. God bless you Annette.
@27jengirl Gidget was created by Frederick Kohner in 1957, who wrote a string of novels about her. Gidget came to movies and TV after that and in each case she was portrayed by a different girl. Sandra Dee starred in "Gidget" (1959), Deborah Walley in "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" (1961),Cindy Carol in "Gidget Goes To Rome" (1963) and Sally Field in the 1965-6 TV series. After that came the TV movies: Karen Valentine in "Gidget Grows Up" (1969), Monie Ellis in "Gidget gets Married" 1972), etc.
It's heartbreaking to realize that the later lives of every single one of these teen queens was marked by tragedy -- from Annette's MS and Natalie Wood's drowning to Connie's rape and how the death of Bobby Darin caused Sandra to spend the rest of her life in sad seclusion. These girls were all great role models for other young women as well as dream dates for every guy. And what do we have today instead? Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, the Kardashians, etc. Give me a break.
@horarwgt OMG! As I was listening & watching this, I was saying Your Words nearly exactly word to word! These beautiful Women, My Era, had such Personal Tragedys...They were everyone's dream girls...just unbelieavable What Happened to Each of them.
Very nice compilation of the stars that populated our dreams when we grew - yes I am that old. Those were the "innocent" days of America, the juke boxes, drive-in theaters, hot-rods, the first Mustangs, getting served fries & burgers at your car by a girl on roller skates. That is until you got drafted & shipped to Vietnam (if you were a male). Thank you for the nice memories,
the 50s, the last innocent decade. It had an unmistakable culture all its own. Music went through some strange changes after that, and a few generations later, it died. Long may we have the memory of music.
At a time when many Italian-Americans were anglicising their names for the stage, Annette retained her name and heritage becoming the perfect girl next door with the squeaky-clean image. This original Mouseketeer became a fun in the sun partner of Frankie Avalon never relinquishing her contrived hair-do whether playing beach blanket blanket Bingo, slurping a soda at the malt shop or turning in at her girlfriends slumber party.
I love how none of them are flashing there breasts or showing there asses in the pictures. You guys should see the teenage girls' facebook photos these days, full on showing there 'boobs' *Sigh*
@theJarofMar me too... im really tired of this decades so called "music" it isnt even music! i have loved the 50s since i was 5! i love the music the clothes EVERYTHING! i wear a pair of saddle shoes EVERYDAY to school and i have for about two years now.
i agree with all you people! i dont like what girls where today ecspecially alot of theyre makeup is skanky! its like they drowned their face with eyeliner! i love to dress old fashioned and i luv the music but today kids dont even care for it or they say its too old!
I would easily trade our technology for the 50's where people had class and style. I mean, wouldn't it be nice to get a love letter instead of a text or a facebook message. Lol. Technology has pretty much ruined communication in my opinion.
@bombayday I don`t mind having all the stuff I got now.
I still try to live up to the class of the 50`s. It`s not easy being one of the few tho...
I only wish the modern musicians would try to bring that good old message back to life, instead of blankly reading up lyrics like they don`t mean anything... If it doesn`t mean anything, then don`t sing it!
I was lucky to have been a schoolboy in the 50s, I'm retired now with lovely memories of the simple and happy times of that decade. Recovering from the ravages of the war years, people turned to happy tunes and simple lyrics to make their music, a link in the chain which brings us to the modern days of popular music. Thanks for posting these songs, they make this old fella very happy indeed.
You people saying you were born in the wrong generation are dumb. I was born in the 90's and wouldn't have it any other way. Plus we have iPods now and can listen to all the music we want
@MysticDMBherb who cares about ipods? back then you used to go dances and be social with everybody...ipods are antisocial! People that cant feel comfortable outside of what they know lack education and confidence. I imagine all these new technological advancements make you feel good about yourself...Well they are a lie and distract you from what life is really about! Viva las 50's!
@AntonioAzz True. But we can still go do dances now...there are places that play this music if you can find one. Sure its harder to come across, but they can still be just as fun as actually living in the 50's, plus we get all the advantages of living in the 21st. No, iPods are not a lie or distraction...they are great, they had 8 tracks then...this is the same thing, but better
@MysticDMBherb , it's true that there are pros and cons to every generation. We have some great advantages today, but some things were better back in those times. If only we could pick and choose!
I remember seeing Annette on the Mousekateers when I was in the second grade. I was in love until a few years later I saw Natalie. I forgot about Annette. LOL
People who talk down on the teen idols of today are really being unfair. I love the 50's, 60's, 80's and 90's but it upsets me when people talk down about MY generation. Don't you think these girls would have been looked down upon in their time too? Older generations would look at them and think THEY looked like skanks because they showed more skin than the generations before them. You can't stop changes in fashion. And Gen Y has much more to offer than just skin and sex, open your minds please.
@BodModxCORE Well I was born in the 90's, so I'm young. You see, I like that we have more advanced technology nowadays. But my I saw this video in that took place in the 30's-50's, and the women in that era had class and what they wore/hair was very neat. But if you see in these music videos nowadays, you see people grinding on each other or at the MTV Movie awards this year, Justin timberlake and Mila Kunis were grabbing each other!! What we are trying to is people then had CLASS.
@facebooker121 People now days have class too. Who are you looking at? Kim Kardashian? Beyonce? Yeah, no shit, if that's what you look at then of COUFSE we look bad. But what about artists like Adele? Duffy? Marina And The Diamonds? Do you see any of them grinding up on anyone in their film clips? No. You can't just corner our generation into the Kesha's and The Pussycat Dolls and say "it is what it is." No, because we're all too individual.
@facebooker121 Ok you calm down you. I ain't trying to bash people as individuals, I mean society, Yes those people you that you picked out do HAVE class do not get me wrong. I like these times -- the 50's b/c of the differences and they're way of speaking. You ask "who am I looking at" is the people I pointed out in my comment. I'm not going to argue. If I offended you, I am sorry, but do not put your anger on me because of my liking.
@Muirmaiden ...if there was one wish i could ever get..i would wanna be able to be born on 1935 ...i wish i could have lived through the 50s 60s and 70s ..when beautiful woman dont have to lie and say the smoke or drink to make them look better ughh i wanna restart life ..today is filled with snotty teens whore celebs and wannabes ...pugh gangsters...Mafia Style BEOTCHESS

@sixstrings2 , the pictures featured are all from the 50s, and since Sandy and Bobby hadn't met yet, that explains it. I've made several tributes to Sandy and Bobby as a couple.
Sandy is gone, Natalie is gone. Annette has had MS since her early forties and Connie was raped in a hotel she was performing at which affected her for years. I guess it's all part of life. They were loved, and still are.
i donot want to be rude ,but how could you leave BREND LEE,PATTIE PAGE,they had hit songs in the 50,s. though PATTIE SANG MOSTLY BALLAD WE DID LIKE THEM SUCH AS CROSS OVER THE BRIDGE,WHY DON,T YOU BELIEVE MEAND WITH MY EYES WIDE OPEN.NATALIE WOOD WAS BEAUTIFUL BUT I DIDN,T THINK OF HER AS A TEEN ,MORE AN ADULT.
Nice job. Hard to believe that Sandra Dee is gone. Annette was one of the fantasy girls that boys of that era had their first "impure thoughts" about. Not sure if Connie Francis was a "teen queen", in that her look was a tad too "mature" to appeal to teenage boys. Seriously hot babe, though. Natalie Wood was sexier than most women of her era (excluding Jayne Mansfield, Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe and Mamie Van Doren, that is).
@elc1960 Let me assure you, Connie appealed to the teen boys of the '50s. She was the #1 teen singer of the time--only 19 years old when she it the top of the charts with Who's Sorry Now?
sad and happy to go back intime with NEIL SEDAKA,the 50,s miss thos oldies gee loved dancing to to all the songs !!as a teen like annette funicello, since i was mexican american had breast by age 11,it was so embarrassing in high school my white girlfriends were flat in the chest it didn,t bother them but by high schooly breast were larger felt like a freak.carried my books across my chest to cover my chest.only nice thing kids told me i looked like annette, well both orgins considered latins
What substitutes for beauty, youth and Health? Nothing! It only comes once in a life time and these young ladies were among the pick of the crop. Watched most of them grow up on TV as I followed them through my young teenage years. Man, what an great era!
Great video! I don't know of a single boy back then that wasn't in love with Annette. Sandra Dee is still cute after all these years. Natalie Wood was one of the most beautiful woman of all time. Connie Francis recorded the songs that made us think about all those girls!
@fairlyfast Sandra Dee was indeed cute at this time and throughout her life but you talk as though she is still alive. Sandra Dee died a year or so ago. Connie Francis is still going strong though. She just had a 50 reunion for "Where the boys are".
i wish girls still looked like this.im gettin tired of these slutz runnin around everywhere today.these chicks had some class with their looks.today's looks=cheap, whoreish, and tacky(i wanna shoot the person who made shiny clothing"in".yesterday's look=classy, smart, dignity.these girls fathers would of thrown them across the room if they left the house in most of today's fashoins.we that shit back.damn child protection services lol
Like thousands of other guys back then, I was in love with Annette. She looks absolutely beautiful in these pictures. Also Connie Francis grew up in my hometown of Belleville, New Jersey
The first two photos of Sandra Dee almost look modern with her hair parted on the side. It seems as if every woman is wearing their hair parted on the side these past eight or ten years...
Notice how very distinct (bordering on heavy) eyebrows on women were very much in voque throughout most of the 1950s?
Connie Francis: a genuine lady. We loved her here in southern New England.
i grew up in the 1950's, the way you tested a boys' sexuality , was to find out if he was head over heels wild about Annette Funicello. If He wasn't, then there was something wrong with the boy.
You forgot Annette's best friend, Shelley Fabares. In addition to acting on The Donna Reed Show, she had a couple of hit songs, including "She Can't Find Her Keys (with Paul Petersen), and the #1 "Johnny Angel". Don't forget the world-class looks.
Its amazing how attractive and stunning these girls/women were, lets compare it to these female singing stars of today, they think putting tatoos all over their bodies is attractive.
@bandstand16 Yea,...so true! These gals these days have no clue!!!! And ya know what,..? It;s sad because many of these girls today are just drop dead beautiful! They just live in a generation that is lost!!

i donot want to be rude ,but how could you leave BREND LEE,PATTIE PAGE,they had hit songs in the 50,s. though PATTIE SANG MOSTLY BALLAD WE DID LIKE THEM SUCH AS CROSS OVER THE BRIDGE,WHY DON,T YOU BELIEVE MEAND WITH MY EYES WIDE OPEN.NATALIE WOOD WAS BEAUTIFUL BUT I DIDN,T THINK OF HER AS A TEEN ,MORE AN ADULT.
auroralight40 11 months ago
Natalie Wood was sexier than most women of her era (excluding Jayne Mansfield, Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe and Mamie Van Doren, that is).
elc1960 11 months ago
@elc1960 Let me assure you, Connie appealed to the teen boys of the '50s. She was the #1 teen singer of the time--only 19 years old when she it the top of the charts with Who's Sorry Now?

What substitutes for beauty, youth and Health? Nothing! It only comes once in a life time and these young ladies were among the pick of the crop. Watched most of them grow up on TV as I followed them through my young teenage years. Man, what an great era!

Great video! I don't know of a single boy back then that wasn't in love with Annette. Sandra Dee is still cute after all these years. Natalie Wood was one of the most beautiful woman of all time. Connie Francis recorded the songs that made us think about all those girls!
fairlyfast 1 year ago
@fairlyfast Sandra Dee was indeed cute at this time and throughout her life but you talk as though she is still alive. Sandra Dee died a year or so ago. Connie Francis is still going strong though. She just had a 50 reunion for "Where the boys are".

Sandra Dee: I'd rail her out.
Natalie Wood: She gives me her last name!
Connie Francis: I'd show her a good time.
Neil Sedaka: He's a pansy.

We loved her here in southern New England.
brownies4you 2 years ago 4
i grew up in the 1950's, the way you tested a boys' sexuality , was to find out if he was head over heels wild about Annette Funicello.
