  • bravissimo giovanissimo :-)

  • His singing is so great, but I can't stop drooling...he was so good looking in 1991! I would have been all over him after the recital LOL

  • wow amazing~ Not sure about the dark hair (hehe) but a young Hvorostovsky, yumm~

  • I'm not particularly thrilled with his cadenza, but the rest of the performance is just gorgeous. They way he caresses the text and feels the rubato show his deep feeling and musicality. Not to mention the richness of the voice....

  • This is my favorite Bellini's aria for the baritone voice. It has such charm and etereal delight that is almost hard not to be touch in our hart by its beauty. Bellini was the real romantic bel canto composer ever existed. Bravo !

  • so much critics.. even bad ones, prove only the big interest for his singing.

  • Was he born with gray hair?

  • It is always a joy seeing him at work

  • Hello out there! This is a 29-year old baritone singing with the vocal authority, musicality and feeling of someone twice his age! I encourage all the nay-sayers of You Tube who try to turn every hearing of every blessed aria into a contest the likes of "America Got Talent" to exercise better judgment. Stracciari, de Luca, Tagliabue are dead (RIP) Hvorostovsky is very much alive. Try connecting with Opera NOW as a living, breathing art!

  • @bandidocat AMEN! Its harder than it looks engage in this art form!

  • My free online music library is the place to find this aria (and many others) sheet music in pdf-format. See link in my youtube profile.

  • Some people are ridiculous, you even wonder if when they comment they know what they saying, the man is good and has faults like everyone who is human, Come on people, if you are such a Critisizer why dont you send you Video so that we listen how Great you are??

  • Yeah, he's has an amazing voice and technique and style. And he's gorgeous and musical. But, do you believe he has just said goodbye to the love of his life? I see no emotional truth, and it's what I hate about opera these days: no one can act.

  • Have you been to the opera house lately? NO one can act? Are you kidding? Or you like Norma Desmond kind of acting?

BTW, this clip is really old. DH does not sing Puritani any more.

  • You state that you do not see "emotional truth" in this performance. But I do. I like it.

  • @davidplayfair I would disagree. Though I (being a trained actor first and foremost!) would agree that acting often suffers, there are many great singers who are also consummate actors. Renee Fleming is quite good. Joyce DiDonato andJonas Kaufmann usually are decent. Also, for perhaps the greatest, I saw Elina Garanca sing Carmen and she was FANTASTIC. Wonderful bold choices, motions FULL of motivation, and wonderful tactics to achieve clear, visible objectives. A great mark of a good actor.

  • He gets a little rough when he pushes the tone beyond its natural compass; still in sense of shape and understanding of the style he is LIGHT YEARS ahead of most people who have sung this piece since the days of Battistini and De Luca.

    And he IS HOT!

  • He sounds like he has azma when he breaths in its like he has trouble breathing in.

  • If I didn't like a particular rendition of a an aria, I wouldn't even bother to write about it; I simply would move to the ones I liked. There are so many to choose from... I for one enjoyed this one :-)

  • For as much as people like to pick out the problems in his voice, he is one of the greatest opera singers around today.

I think this for many reasons. One, his voice has such a unique, beautiful color to it.

He comes from training that isn't the common Italian or German we often hear.

Do you guys ever wonder why we're hearing more and more incredible Eastern European singers? They've got something going on over there.

Dmitri's image alone commands an audience's attention.

  • Actually we've heard great eastern singers for ages: boris christoff was one of them : such a voice, such a technique and naturally such an art...

He was not the only one... fortunately

  • there were always great eastern european singers

  • Belcore, I 100% agree with you. This is an important voice, one that will be remembered for many many years to come.

  • Yeah, seriously. All I know is I forget what I was doing when I hear his voice...that's enough for me! Check out his Rogrigo and tell me his breathing is atrocious...

  • All this criticism aimed at an opera singer of international stature, coming from a bunch of internet dweebs!!! just relax and enjoy. no wonder you haters arent where he is......

  • so many ignoramuses here...

  • I dont even think Dmitri would consider himself a true verdi baritone, however he is a fantastic musician at his best.

In Don Carlos while he didnt have quite the vocal size as some of the other cast he sang within himself, and was very compelling to watch.

Arias like these are perfect for him. Now hes in his 40s he's terrific in roles like War and Peace. Plus the man is hot as can be.

  • Still a very pleasant voice.

  • I've been to a concert where he was singing' and no his voice is not so small. He is a strong and powerful lyric baritone. Baritones don't need to be dark. It's not possible to compare him to others. He has got a unique tone in his voice. As do Mr. Bryn Terfel, he is also a baritone, Bass-baritone and there for has a much darker tone in his voice.

  • He has the best baritone voice in my opinion! one must understand that every singer is unique and will not produce same sounds. Some people seems to think that there is only one type of sound that is right and that`s a mistake!

  • Small voice ? interesting. Rex ,and you'v sung Wotan ? Never set foot on a stage or before an audience . Small voice LOL LOL

  • Actually I've heard Dmitri a good few times live and recently, too, and the voice really isn't all that large, though it is expressive and pleasing on the ear. There really aren't too many baritones out there of the amplitude of Bastianini, Warren and Merrill - and they've all gone. He's a good singer but not one of the greats.

  • Small??? You have to see that this was recorded 16 years ago. Now we have to admit that he has a big mature voice, don't we?

  • wow...this video shows how small his voice really is.

  • you're right!!! This is because he is a Tenor who sings as a baritone. Totally agree with you. ANyway, I like very much how he produce his sound.

  • It is puny! It is even woofier in person. I have seen him several times.

  • Why go to see him if you think his voice is puny? He's a lyric baritone. I hope he doesn't force a heaviness for operatic roles that isn't naturally there. Career could be shortened if he does that. He should stick to the roles that don't make him push his voice. So far he has, I think. He is NOT a tenor singing as a baritone.

  • I did not go to see him, OBVIOUSLY. I went to see other people that were in the same opera. Then why is he singing Verdi baritone roles if that is true? He just has a small voice that is even worse because of his technique.

  • Funny, esteemed members of the opera community aka Levine, Fleming etc. seem to think he's pretty damn good.

  • Well, when there is little to compare him to I can see why. And I highly doubt they would come out and say he is bad. There is a lot of politics behind the scenes and a lot of money. People can believe what they want, but you put him next to Merrill, Warren, Bastianini, Tibbett, Battistini etc. and it would be obvious.

  • Foolish comment, each are their own singers, with their own unique approach to their operatic roles.

    The comment of an ignoramus.

  • nice chord @ 10 seconds in by the pianist... otherwise great!

  • what is the name of this aria?

  • Or dove fuggo io mai...Ah! per sempre io ti perdei

  • russian baritons 'sempre fa sciffo'
