Funny how clips from "The Wicker Man" (at least the original) always generate debates over religion.
It's an exploitation film, from a studio that specialized in exploitation films. Using it as the basis of a serious debate is just stupid. What more needs to be said?
At least the remake with Nicholas Cage is never taken this seriously.

This is my favorite movie of all time!!! Those breasts of Britt Ekland are milk filled as she was pregnant during the filming...her entire voice is dubbed making this her least favorite film of all time!!! What a story from the novel by Robin Hardy and Anthony Shaffer about an island in the Scottish West Hebrides whose annual disastrous fruit harvest prompts them to lure a cop to the island on the pretense of a missing girl in order to offer him up as a sacrifice to appease the pagan gods.

this is beautiful, enough to tempt anyone to become pagan. I watched the Wicker Man as a child and it was a horror, as an adult with an understanding of Christain and Pagan traditions (Christiany is a parody of the worship of the sun in which they put a man called Jesus in the place of the sun god Horus) I see the beauty in paganism and wish we could all get back to worshipping the natural earch and not some man made dieties. We should all worship the sun and fertility and sacrifice Christians!

@Elibobbob I am a christian and I can't help but believe you're right. This movie did portray paganism in a tempting manner. The beauty of a woman and free sensuality attracts us men and in many cases causes our moral downfall. I would invite you to remember the finale of this movie, where an unwilling subject is forcefully sacrificed. No christian is forced to submission by God, only unscrupulous men do that work. You will also get your wish, for Christians are and will be put to death.

Pagans may have sacrificed the one of two. You only believe it's a moral downfall because of your christian beliefs, it's human nature to find women desireable and have sex. @Elibobbob As a Catholic, I can honestly admit that my church has been the hand of death for many in the past. However, this is because of the men in charge at the time and they power they held. No Christian teaching (Catholic or otherwise) promotes or justifies the killing of man. It is the abuse of power by corrupt people, not the religion itself, that kills people. This is not true for paganism. It is true that we have roots in pagan religions, but that doesnt mean we cut and pasted Jesus in.

@DylanVictorSmith I recognise the right to beliefs, but it is exactly the way you say, jesus was cut and paste. Early Christians knew this, which is why early art has Jesus with his head on the sun, because Jesus was and still is representative of the Sun God, and not the son of god. All the iconography, dates are pagan. Look at the statue of Isis with Horus, look at the falic & sun symbols around the vatican. It egyptian astrological mythology made contemporary and as used as a control tool.

@RedSoxForObama I am aware of this. Both Jesus (whether he be prophet, messiah, or whatever one wishes to label such figures) and the Buddha do preach similar morals. Elibobbob might be delighted to point out some of the similarities in artistic portrayal between the two. As a world history enthusiast, I cannot deny the similarities. However, whether Jesus was inspired by the Buddha or not is up for debate. Thank you for the intelligent input. I appreciate it.

@DylanVictorSmith Hundreds of religions are similar to the Jesus story & teachings, maybe you don't know because you've only been exposed to western religion but it's all over the world & in the past too. It seems likely to have originated in egyptian astrological mythology. The bible is written by man - as the qu'aran controls mass peoples, so does/did the book of the bible. The '3 kings' are stars (constellation) not people and neither is Jesus or Mithra or Attis, Krishna, Dionysus etc

@Elibobbob Im aware of other religions and have a very keen interest in them. Similar stories have been echoed over the centuries with different characters but with identical morals. I'm not saying Christianity is the only right religion and all the rest are wrong. We all worship the same deity (debatable) by different means. I do appreciate how you said "does/did the book of the bible." It certainly did at a time when everyone was ignorant, but now it is more of a revered guideline.

@cuntyballs07 While I don't doubt these elements are included in the Hebrew Scriptures, your argument isn't a very strong one until you mention specific verses. Do that and you have a very valid point. It is impossible to defend every word of Scripture in any religion (especially on the internet), but it is equally difficult to look at religion merely as a justification for killing. Was it used as a tool of murder? In some cases most definitely. Religion has caused more good than evil however.

This is part of why religion often turns out bad, because people trust authority figures before themselves, and this is why my personal preference is Satanism, because it teaches you to always trust yourself before anyone else. Buddha and Jesus are my homeboys, though. "I got nothing against God, it's his fanclub I can't stand". It's so easy to hypnotize oneself aka tunnel-vision.

@DylanVictorSmith Another weak point of religion is those texts that were written so long ago which are not relevant to society today. There is of course wisdom in ancient religious texts, but there is also so much bullcrap, and for people to use those texts as guidelines can have very bad consequenses. Some avid atheists are just as religious in their own way. The most sensible stance is "I don't know", which will hopefully become the religion of tomorrow. God for me is "just" the universe.

Would atrocities still be committed even without the misconstrued justification that wretched men generate by means of religion? You bet. Religion is not solely a bad thing. It provides solace and peace of mind for the benevolent in a world so cruel and twisted. Religion is flawed because man is flawed.

@welshguy94 He is lured to the island because of the need of a sacrifice. He is baited and also told that there has been no disappearance of the yound girl, but he stays of his own free will. Yes a virgin was needed, but he was also being given a way out (by loosing his virginity). He is playing the part of the 'fool', willingly, by his own free will. Ironically, he dresses the 'fool' in the procession near the end. There he is treated as the King for the day.
