I saw this movie for the first time on midday tv when I was a kid. Can't understand what the problem is: it's a beautiful movie. I would hope people would have moved on a bit & enjoy the movie for what it is, I don't think it was made intending to cause offense. Would love to see it released on DVD/Blue ray (there are a lot worse things released than a charming kids movie). From Oz
I've been to Disneyland at least 14 times from 2nd grade in '92 til July '10 and I've loved the Splash Mountain ride, although, I've never known the story behind it until the past few days. I was able to watch the movie via youtube in parts and I think it's a great movie! History, laughter, cute, imaginative, love the songs... why put it in the vault? Release it! I want a copy! Disney has released worse things than this!
I have been to Disney World 11 times and Disney land 4 times. I have been on splash mountain at least 30 times. I'm a college student and am planning my 12th trip. In all my trips and rides on Splash Mountain it was not till this week that i learned the backstory to the ride. I know the tale of Br' Rabbit, Br' Fox, and Br' Bear from the ride but never even knew that there was a movie behind it all. Please allow this movie to be released int the US for all to see! It is a great story!
This movie is an important record of American history. "[Joel Chandler] Harris spent hundreds of hours in the slave quarters during time off. Much of his self-consciousness disappeared in the slave quarters, and his humble background as an illegitimate, red-headed son of an Irish immigrant helped foster an intimate connection with the slaves. He absorbed the stories, language, & inflections ... animal tales they shared later became the foundation and inspiration for Harris's Uncle Remus tales."
In Haunted Mansion the ghost of a young white man haunts a mansion. The ghost falls in love with Eddie Murphy's wife, the reincarnation of a young black girl he had wanted to marry. But that was the antebellum South. OK. Social engineering in your face, but let it go. But then, the ghost and the spirit of the black girl are united despite the ravings of the young man's father's ghost, who objects. The old man is then cast screaming into Hell. See, Disney will step on toes, if they are white.
You know, I feel happy to hear that beautiful Woman speak out, and telling these people what we, the Fans have wanted. Was that woman you? Or someone else? And by the way, there seems to be NTSC Region DVD Copies of the Movie online at the iOffer website
I don't think SOTS is racist but the reason it got banned is because people says that Uncle Remus and the other black people are happy even when they're slaves
You would think that the (infamous) Disney lawyers would want to put the bootleggers out of business. In the meantime, I'm enjoying my bootleg DVD but would love to see a fully restored "official" version.
If Steven Spielberg can have the heart and courage on making a book written by a female African-American novelist into a movie that is on both VHS and DVD, which is "The Color Purple," then I don't see why Disney CEO; Robert Iger and The Walt Disney Company cannot have the heart and courage to release this onto DVD and BluRay as a Walt Disney Vault classic like other old Disney classics like Old Yeller, Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon, Pollyanna and many other Disney classics known to Disney fans.
@1985Nebraska Not to mention "So Dear To My Heart" (which WAS planned for DVD at first), and that WWII Movie, "Victory Through Air Power" (now THAT was some strange movie.)
@DisneyEchoTV for the record, So Dear To My Heart seems to be, and that other movie, Victory Through Air Power is part of the Walt Disney Treasures Collection.
so, yeah. both those films WERE on DVD. I saw myself that So Dear To My Heart is on DVD at Amazon, but I'm not sure about that War Film.
All I know is the children of today DO NOT know the story behind the disney ride(splash mountain) at disney world. For the longest I didn't, i only had the sing a long tape...Disney should consider putting this movie out on dvd/blu-ray. I mean if it is racist they will have to just get over it. It's time to move on people!!!!!!!! GET OVER IT! It's no different than anything else being put out. I've seen whole lot worse. Children today need a film like this! There is way to much trash on tv(dvd).
They should re-release it in theatres!!! It would bring in so much revenue!! Since all Disney does nowadays is Pixar when it comes to animated films -___- we rarely see any animated cartoons anymore.
Bolt is coming out soon and it is from Disney and not Pixar. But I agree they should release SotS in one form or another. I'd love to see it on Blu-ray!
I never saw the movie Song of the South, but I use to have the Disney Sing-A-Long VHS of "Zip-Eh-Dee-Do-Dah" which was the song from the movie. I think this movie diserves it's spot on DVD. Since movie star Hattie McDaniel from MGM's classic; Gone With The Wind, is in Song of the South, I'm pretty sure that Gone With The Wind fans would also want this on DVD. I'm sure this movie will make it to DVD someday. I'm also sure Disney CEO; Robert Iger, will do something about releasing this to DVD.
i love this movie. I saw this for the first time in 1986. I am now 4 years of age and the clips I have seen here still make me as happy as the first time. All children should be able to experience this great Disney classic.
she's a very smart lady, the public should decide. could someone explain to me why it's so 'racist'. because all my friends of every ethnic group can't see aything wrong with it. when I rode splash mountain I wanted to see the movie myself. being only nine I couldn't understand why it was so wrong. is disney afraid of being sued or somthing?
i've always wanteed to see this movie but b/c it basically baned i could never see it. seem like a good movie, and im not racist. my cousin james saw the film when he was younger and he loved the movie and he's african american.
It's tough to explain to an 8 year old why they can't watch this film after riding on Splash Mountain. The woman in this clip is right: let the public decide. I saw this film when I was a kid and I turned out great.
i hope they do cause i rode splash mountain when i was little and stuff and i wonder where brer rabbit is from.i found out it was song of the south.i hope they realease this soon i wanna see the movie since i rode the ride.

SGXCodeblack 2 years ago
The people who say that obviously haven't seen the movie because it clearly takes place at a time when there are no longer any slaves in the U.S.
DisneyEchoTV 2 years ago
They could even add a disclaimer at the beginning, and say that it MAY not be suitable for some audiences.
We just want to see the movie.

What about the 08 and 09 shareholder meetings ? Was anything mentioned about releasing SOS ?
SuperMikeyg 2 years ago
Yup! And the answer was basically the same... :-/ Note that Disney doesn't even have the balls to release "The Path to 9/11" on DVD...
DisneyEchoTV 2 years ago
This is silly. All Disney has to do is release it as a movie club exclusive.
