Like the film but agree somewhat that some scenes continue long after point is made---the singing at the bar sequence was interminable. But who could not love all three but esp. BEN G in this film???
between the two it sound more like carter than davis to me, but could easily be someone else. they phrase part of "when johnny comes marching home" towards the end.
...it sounds like it starts out with solo bass and drums to have a cello or second bass come in on top? ...maybe eldee young with red holt and another bass?
I have no idea; it could just as easily be some random studio bassist, someone who recorded a lot of studio work but whose name is unknown to most people. Herbie Flowers, for instance, played the unforgettable bass riff in Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" (combining a double bass and electric bass, one of the only bass lines of any rock song with two basses playing at once) but how many people know who he is?
For an acoustic bassist, especially in jazz tone is very distinctive. I seriously doubt it is an unknown studio player. It SOUNDS like Carter. Its in the phrasing too.

I like this film - Ben Gazzara, Peter Falk and Cassavetes are great! Thanks for sharing!

the scene with the singing is absolutely one of my very favorites, which just goes to show it takes all kinds...
I wish I could find that piece of music. It's super cool.

I'm trying to figure out if the bassist is Richard Davis or Ron Carter. Anyone know?

That is amazing! I've never heard Ray Brown in that kind of jazz-rock or funk context. How did you find out?

Of course I have heard him do a couple of boogaloo type things with Oscar Peterson, so I know he's done it.
