Oh,Oh,Oh! From where does this Eula Beal come? I do love this unique voice...have never heard anything quite like it! Kathleen Ferrier and Dame Baker come about as close...but not to be compared. Somehow, I get the impression that this is a person from another age. Looking at her hair style, dress and general appearance of the room does that to me. Will look her up because I did enjoy this very sad, emotional piece. BRAVA Eula...whereever you may be. Thanks for the post!
i'm a contralto and this doesn't sound like contralto to me is there operatic contralto's and jazz contralto's? when i say jazz contraltos im thinking like etta james, most notably judy garland, nina simone, the singing voice for ursela in little mermaid, peggy lee etc.
@Poet2916 yea. i'm a classical singer and classical contraltos have a higher range. Actually the contraltos i know also sing alot of mezzo-soprano literature. So yea i think it's safe to say that classical contraltos have a higher range than contraltos in other genres, probably because of the head voice being the dominant register.
there was a video of this song published in you tube perhaps 1 or 2 years ago. It was sung by a baritone (leonard warren ?? i'm not sure;..). wonderfull interpretation...does anyone know it ??
Look at her, a perfect instrument! She is so true to the text and music. And I didn't know she existed until now. I wish I knew about her before she left this world. Amazing...no diva here, just a singer, but a perfect singer!
CraigFrancisSoto : thank you for the data. I imagined her voice was that of a contralto. Many people do not like that range of voice, but I like it, though it is very uncommon to hear a really good contralto. I like to hear that song when I am sad. The first time I heard it I had 16 yrs old, in a recording by Ezio Pinza. I haven't found never since then of that Bass. He was good too.
alontas- This piece was taken from a 1947 short film called 'Concert Magic'.Isn't her voice just marvelous, And a true contralto, not a mezzo. Che bellissima voce !
There`s something extra touching about contralto voices,I think, maybe because of the dark timbre,it`s better suited for conveying sad emotions. I don`t know. I`m biased though, cause I`m a contralto too hehe.
None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness Alone and parted Far from joy and gladness Alone and parted far From joy and gladness My senses fail A burning fire Devours me None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness
This is whats its all about...the most incredible voice ive ever heard...this is the first time ive ever commented on anything on youtube but had to for her...Stunning!
Che bellissima voce! I was not at all familiar with her previously. What a marvelous contralto voice. And what a great pity for us opera lovers that Ms. Beal essentially retired to get married and raise a family at a young age. This young lady would have had a great career given her truly superb voice.Grazie mille Signora Beal. Bravissima !
CraigFrancisSoto-It is my understanding that she was already very happily married, and simply chose that life of a housewife and mother, over fame and fortune. She was as good as it got!!
What a strong statement that is about her nature. Love and family are not to be ignored or taken lightly. I respect her decision. Thanks paulostroff, for this information about this superb artist. Her performance is hauntingly beautiful - sharing the gold medal with Pavel Lisitsian.
@vstasov Yes, indeed, look, a perfect singer, with a perfect technique, and a royal stage appearance, yet, she knows that family should be above career. What a statement for each one of today's women, from someone who could have had all the fame in the world, if she would have wanted it!
She's fabulous! I've never heard of her but I will never forget her great technique, If you don't have it, you will never move people the way she does. WOW!
Does anyone know where a good video of an operatic contralto is??? I can't find any!

Eula Beal's radiant and elegant voice with its warm coloration imbues every
poetic word, phrase and emotion with the highest dignity and deepest
conviction! Tchaikovsky's eternal song is lifted out of the commonplace
into the sublime! Thank you for posting and to CraigFrancisSoto for
sharing this treasure!

It is a better voice than Rise Stevens with certainly a better top. It is something special and that is rare.
